Good Wagyu Steak Dinner @ The Prime Society on 28Apr2015

jack’s creek wagyu mbs5:6 ribeye 200g

had a good wagyu steak dinner with wife at the prime society on 28.4.2015. ^^

it was raining. didn’t feel like cooking, didn’t want to go far so the prime society at dempsey seemed a good choice, only a few steps in the rain with a large golf umbrella. 🙂

we had a roll & butter.

service was very good. competent, friendly & polite.

my wife was here previously & had the wagyu & oysters. for me, first time. we ordered about the same things.

oysters were S$5eaach, so with palate 50% for 2pax, it was S$2.50/oyster, quite doable.

they were good too, juicy, plump, tasty, no metallic taste. i can have this again!

we ordered our wagyu steaks – 2 ribeye both medium as recommended by server.

i asked to take photos of the wagyu. they decided they did not want me taking the chef preparation area, either that or it was some communication thing, so they brought the 3 different cuts to the table. it was fine by me, as i already said to the lady that it was ok if photo was inconvenient for them.

this lady said the same thing that sirloin had the fat on the outside & ribeye had more marbling at fat at the middle so more flavourful. she added that the topside was also an excellent cut. she said topside had to be cooked rare or medium rare & would be tough if medium. i had the impression that topside was usually not as good as sirloin or striploin & ribeye was best among the 3. anyway, i am quite keen to go back & try the topside!^^

jack’s creek wagyu mbs5/6 200g

the 200g cut was a good size. it was very well chargrilled & medium was quite fine for me though i probably would not have minded medium rare too.

for me, it was better definitely than angus, not better than my own wagyu ribeye from mmmm, and of course one can never make comparison with the much superior –

excellent kagoshima japanese wagyu & miyazaki japanese wagyu at arossa (now closed)

A4 japanese ohmi japanese wagyu from me@oue.

3 sauces = red wine, pepper & béarnaise

3 sauces = red wine, pepper & béarnaise

the 3 sauces were very good for the wagyu steak. like the red wine sauce best with a dab of béarnaise. did not take much of pepper sauce.

excluding wine, it was S$98 for 2pax after 50% palate discounts. not as good deal as arossa previously, but arossa could not survive at tat price & location, no point right?

it was really enjoyable dinner. & i plan to be back to try the wagyu topside.

Nice Birthday Lunch for a Good Friend on 27Apr2015

grilled cod

grilled cod

bought early birthday lunch for a close friend today at mikuni on 27.4.2015. ^^

they do not serve the grand tour tasting menu for lunch. for simplicity & ease i ordered the premium bento “miyabi” from the lunch set menu.

unagi don

& there was an unagi don & a clear soup.

dessert

dessert

dessert was nice.

this friend is quite busy guy & i don’t get to spend much time with him except during chinese new year. so it was a very good lunch talking about family, children, his work etc.

the food at mikuni is always pretty ok. however the premium bento “miyabi” at S$120pax (even with 50% discount to S$60pax) was to me below par.  e.g.-

the robatayaki set at S$68 here at mikuni (vs S$120) offers the same kagoshima wagyu skewer & the teppanyaki set at S$68 also offer cod, beef & golden prawns

the chirashi don at S$90 is very much superior.

likewise the S$62 chirashi don set at kuriya.

not everything is directly comparable of course…we were more interested to catch up & did not pay much attention to the menu, but they must have changed the menu as we did not get the golden prawns & bara chirashi. maybe i will write to mikuni to ask about it.

Wonderful Memorable Homecooked 19pax Dinner Get-together on 24Apr2015

had a most wonderful & memorable homecooked dinner get-together on 24apr2015.

a most fun part was the interactivity & excitement with several friends bringing their dishes, from morocan salmon, hummus, biscotti, konnyaku to tofu cheese cake & ma hua 麻花 airflow from tianjin.^^

a friend even set up a separate whatsapp chat (so as not to bore the rest of dinner friends with cooking talk). 🙂

it was just wonderful. excluding bread, humus, ma hua, fruits, konnyaku, biscotti, we had 14 dishes (12+2 desserts). 🙂

bread, hummus, carrot sticks

bread, hummus, carrot sticks

because a friend was bringing hummus, that motivated me to do a onion sunflower seed bread. i didn’t realise i had walnut (was searching for it) for walnut bread, so settled with sunflower seeds.^^

onion sunflower seed bread

onion sunflower seed bread

the laughable thing was after looking at several online recipes i decided hack just used the ariston oven bread function & recipe. of course i tried the recipe once. dough was too sticky & too much salt & i added too much browned onions.

for the actual day, the bread was quite perfect. all the friends like it. crisp not hard outside & fluffy well-risen inside. for the recipe, i used 600g plain flour, 3 packets yeast (33g) dissolved in 1 cup (240ml) warm water, & 1 tsp salt. 🙂

carrot sticks

carrot sticks

leck san's chickpea+avocado hummus leck san's chickpea hummus

my friend made excellent chickpea hummus, and the green coloured one she added avocado. i think it was new to her too, so there was a lot of fun doing this dinner for all our good RI friends.

ma hua - 天津麻花

ma hua – 天津麻花

a friend was with her students in tianjin for some exchange programs & brought back ma hua 麻花. i finished them the next day, pretty good, not sickeningly sweet like the malaysian ones.

pumpkin tofu

#1 pumpkin tofu

pumpkin tofu rockets salad

#1 – pumpkin tofu rockets salad

#1 my wife made a pumpkin tofu salad. this a wonderful salad she made after some lunch at marmalade.^^

#2 i have made tagliata di manzo (sliced beef) many times. it is a common italian dish. i had it at capri, and many time at fresco & cimmino at milan.^^

the angus ribeye was pan-grilled, charred to produce the maillard reaction to impart the flavours & nicely medium rare. 🙂

#3 teriyaki cod was excellent this evening, many commented melt in the mouth goodness.^^

i used my own teriyaki sauce recipe, this time adding 1 tsp of miso. miso cures the cod & give a firmer, less flaky texture.

friend's morocan baked salmon

#4 friend’s morocan baked salmon

Mahen's morocan baked salmon Mahen's morocan baked salmon4 Mahen's morocan baked salmon2 Mahen's condiments - lemon and Chinese chives.

#4 a friend made a very nice morocan baked salmon with pistachios & ritz biscuits, and condiments of chives & lemon. it was also his first time. for me, this was a lot of fun & buzz.^^

#5 i made a chilli crab capellini (angel hair pasta). i had the sauce made the day before, taste was not ideal & i made some adjustments on the day. it turned out quite perfect, an excellent chilli crab sauce & after pasta & prawns were added, the capellini soaked up the flavours remarkably & was very well infused with the shellfish flavours (from prawn heads & shells, and w/o crab). 🙂

& very important pasta was al dente!

#6 i made an excellent very tasty squid ink sauce & a friend came to the kitchen to help out & tasted the sauce. it was superb with a nice chilli padi spike.

unfortunately, after adding linguine, sauce looked low & i made the cardinal mistake of adding some water. did a rescue by removing the pasta & ingredients (so as not to overcook) & reducing the sauce. still when plating though sauce was sufficiently dark colour & slight creamy producing good texture feel on pasta, the top less coated linguine looked off in colour.

fortunately taste wise it was very good. i guess could have been better.

#7 i think my 白斩鸡 – poached chicken was very near perfect, certainly better than most chicken rice out there!

& today i made an excellent chicken rice. as a friend commented, he could smell the very fragrant rice as it was brought to the table!

i browned some shallots in chicken fat (this was a key) & added cut ginger. the other key was a very intense chicken bone soup for cooking the rice. the soup came from making the chicken & adding the bones after i deboned the chicken & boiled for >2hrs.

& i made the chilli sauce & ginger sauce that everyone loved.

Leck San's acahr Leck San's achar2

a friend brought excellent achar, just the right appetising condiments for the chicken rice.

jap miso salmon

#8 jap miso salmon

#8 the jap miso salmon was done like the japanese bento style.

i didn’t have the recipe so experimented myself. i marinated with miso etc & dried it in the fridge for 2 days then 3hrs at 55degC to dry it further. after that it was 15mins in foil+10mins open in tabletop electric oven at 250degC.

i would say result was almost same as the bento salmon & those we brought back from japan. it was best served on japanese rice don with tamago but will do for the chicken rice.

spicy pork ribs

#9 spicy pork ribs

my helper’s spicy pork ribs was also a perennial favourite. 🙂

#10 蒜泥白肉 was a favourite for many. very tender melt in the mouth belly pork (about 5 hrs on crockpot at low fully immersed) & flavourful sichuan chilli sauce.

#11 dry wok prawns was 1 of my standard dish. this time though i did not dry the prawns enough before adding to the wok so it became a bit wet. prawns was fresh & sweet but the charred bbq flavours were missing. some hits & some misses.

romaine lettuce

#12 romaine lettuce

#12 & my helper’s romaine lettuce, complemented the pumpkin salad & good counterpoint to the meat dishes.

#13 a friend brought a tofu cheese cake. i took the cake & taste was pretty good. unfortunately the gelatine he used seemed to be weaker concentration than the ones i got from phono huat. so though he used the same recipe, the cake did not hold. it was a waste really for the effort but i guess doing it was a fun thing we all shared.^^

$14 i did my usual tiramisu & i added quite a good dose of brandy which my friends love. it was good as usual.

friend's jackfruit

friend’s jackfruit

friend's grapes

friend’s grapes

2 friends brought jackfruit & grapes to round off the dinner.

friend's konnyaku

friend’s konnyaku

friend's biscotti

friend’s biscotti

the friend who brought hummus also did 2 very nice petite fours – a konnyaku jelly & biscotti.

it was an evening of fellowship & sharing, a lot of fun, catching up & sharing good food together.^^

Excellent Modern Vegetarian for 13pax RI G20 Dinner @ Sufood on 30Mar2015

sufood mosiac

sufood mosiac

we had an interesting italian-inspired modern vegetarian dinner for 13pax RI G20 get-together at Sufood on 30.3.2015. a very good choice by the organiser. ^^

founded in 2010, sufood is the first meat-free concept restaurant under WOWPRIME GROUP, the largest F&B operator in taiwan. this raffles city restaurant opened in May2014 is its first in singapore.

one of the friends used the phone apps to make a mosaic food picture (top photo). very nice!

a few of us, myself included, took the mushroom salad, a popular dish. it was good. 🙂

another took the summer salad.

& the classic garden salad with a choice of sesame sauce or caesar dressing.

pumpkin soup

pumpkin soup

for the soup, cream of pumpkin was a popular choice.

pea soup with mushrooms

pea soup with mushrooms

i had the pea soup with oyster mushroom cubes at the bottom. maybe this was the healthy version so it was not an intense cream of pea soup, texture combination was great, with the crunchy mushrooms. it was the same also with the pumpkin soup, not intense & flavourful.

a friend & i both thought we could do a better tasting soup than these 2. 🙂

soup

cabbage & sweet potato stew

some had the root soup, and the most healthy among us went for the cabbage & sweet potato stew. 🙂

calzone

calzone

the calzone came highly recommended. calzone looked like a huge curry puff. the dough was more akin to pizza dough.

i must say after trying a few, i was in total agreement that calzone was the best dish/main course.

pita pockets

pita pockets

i picked the pita pocket though. many of the main courses came with plastic gloves, if you wanted to share your food.^^

pita pockets

pita pockets

the mock meatballs were pretty ok but it was not as tasty & satisfying as the calzone.

pasta

porcini pasta

don’t really know how the porcini pasta tasted like, but generally the food quality was competent, pretty ok for vegetarian dishes though not spectacular.

squidink pasta

squidink pasta

i would rate the squid ink as the second best after the calzone. the mushrooms were shaped to look like squid rings.

squidink pasta

squidink pasta

but of course we are not really comparing these vegetarian dishes say with the creamy squid ink pasta at valentino or la braceria.

certainly my own squid ink dish is much more intense & flavourful. 🙂

some friends had osmanthus jelly. didn’t try it but that should be very safe, couldn’t go wrong.^^

the company & dinner were very enjoyable. these gatherings came about quite naturally, a desire to spend time with friends & share views & experiences.^^

& wine was marvellous of course. 🙂

the food was good especially for the new experience, and it was good quality at a good price – 8 “courses” for S$29.80++.

doesn’t blow me away for sure, but equally it is a place i am happy to come back a few times.^^

Average Food @ Tianbao Restaurant on 18Apr2015

tan tan noodles

tan tan noodles – S$10.80

bought a groupon voucher S$48.80 for S$100 at tianbao restaurant (serving sichuan dimsum) at ngee ann city.

daughter was arranging 4pax dinner on sunday so we decided to use the voucher & made a reservation at tianbao restaurant on 18.4.2015. in the end daughter was held up by her work & we had 3pax dinner.

place had 2 seatings 5.30pm & 7.30pm. traffic was ok but restaurant was not full when we were there.

xiaolongbao小笼包

xiaolongbao小笼包 – S$9.80

we ordered xiaolongbao, quite ex S$9.80 for 6 if not for the 50% discounts. by comparison, crystal jade lamian xiaolongbao price was about $5 for 4??

and it was S$3 for 5 at joyful palace, albeit that being at clementi food loft, a coffeeshop location.

& both crystal jade & joyful palace’s xiaolongbao were better! these ones had very little soup & the soup & pork were not very tasty.

steamed pork ribs - flour on top?

tan tan noodles

tan tan noodles- S$10.80

the tan tan noodles were pretty good. it was not heavy in peanut sauce, there were some at the bottom. there was a bit of meat & overall taste & texture were quite good. this one of the better dishes. 🙂

stewed eggplant

stewed eggplant – S$12.80

the stewed eggplant had good consistency. eggplant was nice, though wife found it a bit sweet, but that was the style of preparation.

steamed egg topped with minced pork sauce

steamed egg topped with minced pork sauce

steamed egg topped with minced pork sauce – S$8.60

the steamed egg dish was like a sichuan styled chawanmushi, not quite as nice. egg custard was smooth & tasty enough. i didn’t mind the minced pork sauce too. pretty ok dish.

chives dumpling

chives dumpling – S$8.80

chives dumpling

chives dumpling – S$8.80

the chives dumpling was odd. chives were dry & not sweet, skin was rough. the look did not have the fineness of hong kong dimsum & taste & texture were quite off.

seafood taste dumpligs 海味抄手

seafood taste dumpligs 海味抄手 – S$9.80

the seafood taste dumpligs 海味抄手 turned out to be the best dish, alongside the tan tan noodles.

we only know of the usual spicy dumplings or 红油抄手. never heard of  红油抄手. anyway the soup was tasty & the dumplings were like the usual 抄手 but not spicy.^^

osmanthus jelly

some mochi dumpling with peanuts – S$5

the mochi sort of dumplings with peanut was quite poor for me. looked nice enough, but taste wise the 汤圆i bought from giant ( 2 packets x10pieces for S$2.95.) was distinctly better.

total price was S$98.10. we used one S$100 voucher which cost S$48.80, so it was about S$16pax nett. only with the discounts, cannot complain about the price.

but not much shiok factor, say c/w our recent S$33nett 2pax dinner at shin yeh with palate 50% discounts.

Pleasant Dinner Tete a Tete @ La Braceria on 18Apr2015

wagyu & porcini fettucine

wagyu & porcini fettucine

a friend bought dinner this evening at la braceria on 17.4.2015.^^

he had wanted me to try shelter in the woods but that was fully booked for the evening. 🙂

years ago, la braceria was located at ming teck park area, close to my place. after that the chef has moved to different places a few times.

this friend last joined my home dinners more than 1/2 year ago. this time, he wanted just to buy dinner & have a tete a tete. 🙂

we ordered 1 antipasti & 2 pastas to share, and my friend wanted to share a choc lava cake.

flamed lava cake

flamed lava cake

flamed lava cake

i am impressed with the flamed lava cake. the flavour was very good. texture was better than my lava cake, a lot more lava, anyway i will adjust my lava cake a bit & see if i can produce more lava. the lava texture is an important contributor to the overall experience.

while it was a very enjoyable dinner with friend who picked up the tab, the dinner cost S$102, about same as what i paid the other night for 2pax at il Lido.

there was no comparison for the ambience & class of il Lido, and we had black cod with unit & scampi pasta with uni & a grilled octopus. on top of that we had 2 great amuse bouche of fine dining standard. so la braceria pales by comparison & is really not competitive on price.

Homemade Miso Salmon Lunch + Japanese Condiments/Side Dishes on 19Apr2015

miso salmon

miso salmon

wife bought some japanese side dishes/condiments from meidi ya liang court. we had a simple really nice home lunch on 19.4.2015.^^

i made a miso salmon, the best i have made..after a few tries, it’s now nearly perfected. wife said same as those bought from japan & from isetan..almost, i guess..

i marinated the salmon with 1 tbsp (heap) miso, 1tbsp light soy sauce, 1 tbsp mirin, 1 tbsp sake, 1 tbsp brown sugar. then put on a rack in the fridge (or chiller compartment) for 2days. then i put in 55degC oven for 3hrs. the idea was to dry out the salmon & marinade. this is only major difference from my usual miso salmon preparation. becos i see the miso salmon or mentaiko salmon in Japan were all dryer preparation. then 20mins in aluminium foil tabletop oven 250degC (include 5mins open foil to grill skin),

with this preparation, my miso salmon was almost same as those we bought in Japan. a lot cheaper, haha!^^

japanese condiments-marinated/cured squid, octopus, seaweed

love the condiments, side dishes. they are perfect with Japanese rice. salty though & made you eat more rice, so unhealthy on both score. haha!

& i made a yuzu pepper, again modelling after what we bought from japan. it was very good in fact.

we bought yuzu from the gourmet market at savour 2015. this came from the skin of 1 yuzu. i added 3 chilli padi, 2 tbsp flat brown sugar, 1tbsp mirin, 1 tbsp sake, 1tbsp tsuyu, & 1 tbsp strawberry jam, and blend.

very nice, almost same as the Japanese yuzu pepper, good for beef, rice etc.

we were served 2 amuse bouche.

first was a mushroom cappuccino/foam. there were mushroom bits at the bottom & some balsamic cream & some barley etc on top.  taste was intense, fabulous. texture combination excellent too.

wife said what the server liked to hear, that this was better than jaan’s.

for me though, nothing beats jaan’s cepes mushroom tea amuse bouche. but since jaan’s was taken out of feed at raffles, and i am never going to pay full price for the degustation dinner at jaan, this would be the next best thing, i guess! & its close too!^^

grilled octopus

we ordered a grilled octopus to share.

it’s pretty good really. octopus was tender (like sous vide). there were some sausages.

prawn & uni tagliolini

prawn & uni tagliolini

for the mains, we basically go with the restaurant favourites & there server’s recommendations, and ordered the scampi & sea urchin taglioni & the black cod, asparagus & sea urchin. both were featured in the degustation set menu. 🙂

prawn & uni tagliolini

prawn & uni tagliolini

prawn & uni tagliolini

prawn & uni tagliolini

the scampi & uni tagliolini was tasty, not intense but subtle & pleasing. tagliolini though was too soft NOT al dente.

it had expensive ingredients like uni but overall taste & experience wise, i would not consider it better than most pastas i do myself.

black cod

will try the other signature dish, the bone marrow crusted angus beef tenderloin next time.

we had a passionfruit sorbet & a coconut gelato to share. sorbet was tangy & excellent, gelato no coconut flavours nothing like the delicious coconut ice cream on 雪中情怀mango pomelo dessert we had at tunglok.

dinner cost S$100nett include 1 glass of white.

it’s really quite excellent ambience & food for a couples dinner. 🙂

Great Value Tasty Food @ Shinyeh on 17Apr2015

luroufan卤肉饭

luroufan卤肉饭

had great tasty food in great ambience at shinyeh with wife on 17.4.2015.

not been to shinyeh for a while. used to frequent here quite a bit because of palate discounts before i started blogging & recording (which is why i blog) in mar2013.

last time i came here was when a RI friend organised a 20pax G20 monthly dinner here.

shinyeh

shinyeh

nice ambience & we were seated next to the fountain near the front.^^

chives dumpling

chives dumpling

chives dumplings looked gorgeous.

chives dumpling

chives dumpling

tasted gorgeous too! yum!^^

luroufan卤肉饭

luroufan卤肉饭

taiwanese restaurant got to try luroufan卤肉饭la.^^

years ago, when i visited taipei, alone & also with wife, we had the most wonderful luroumian卤肉面at 度小月.

shinyeh’s luroufan卤肉饭 was good. egg was really tasty. braised pork quite good also. i must try this at home. for comparison though, the hong kong steamed chicken feet pork ribs rice, especially at timhowan shamshuipo still better.

yam pastry

yam pastry

yam pastry

yam pastry

wife like this yam pastry. had not taken for many years. still enjoyed it. yam was very good, the pastry though was not crisp & a bit rubbery, so not quite good enough overall.

oysters in black bean sauce

oysters in black bean sauce

oysters in black bean sauce

oysters in black bean sauce

we had never ordered oysters in black bean sauce. probably new menu too. and it was very good. the distinct oyster flavours (& they had loads of them) was excellent balanced by the slight salty sauce & scallions. this would be easy to do at home, can use yellow onions too. 🙂

dried sole with chinese cabbage (excellent)

dried sole with chinese cabbage (excellent)

dried sole with chinese cabbage (excellent)

dried sole with chinese cabbage (excellent)

& the dried sole with chinese cabbage was a great find. menu said 扁鱼sole, so it’s some kind of flat fish. should be able to do this dish at home too, get some proxy for the 扁鱼sole. 🙂

the almost stewed chinese cabbage made the soup dish very sweet & tasty. the dried sole texture was like a fluffy gluten, interesting, good texture, some sweetness not much of special taste. 🙂

overall it was an excellent dinner. overall it was an excellent dinner. service was also very good, polite, attentive, friendly.

and it only cost S$33 net after amex palate 50% discounts for 2pax. would have been lower but apparently the S$4.20 chives dumplings (a cardboard menu on the table) was not included in the palate discounts. not really right as the restaurant did not state that there were menu items & palate discounts applies to all ala carte items.

anyway, chives dumpling was very good, it was just few $ & we were happy with the price for the food we gotten, restaurant also have to make some money la.^^

Gourmet Carnival Atmosphere @ Savour 2015 on 28Mar2015

entry queue at savour (26-29mar2015)

entry queue at savour (26-29mar2015)

my wife’s friend bought us a pair entry tickets to savour 2015 on 28mar2015.

there was a queue at the entrance at 6pm. the entrance tickets were S$69 for each person and had S$30 stored-value on each ticket. i guess that means entrance fee was S$39. i think we topped up another S$60 each.

i guess i had read about savour but never really paid attention. now that we were going, i kind of read up on the participating restaurants, decided on a few to try.

ku de ta's duck + angus beef S$18

ku de ta’s duck + angus beef S$18

one of the restaurant stalls we were interested was ku de ta.

wife not interested in belly pork (which is so common these days in fine dining), so we picked the sous vide duck + angus beef plate for S$18.

ku de ta's angus beef

ku de ta’s angus beef

beef ok but then we can do anytime. no attraction.

ku de ta kiosk

ku de ta kiosk

ku de ta's duck

ku de ta’s duck

duck pretty good too. again you can buy smoked duck from ntuc, mmmm, even qoo10.

ku de ta kiosk

ku de ta kiosk

certainly competent. no great motivation to go sky high & pay sky high.

crowd at stellar's kiosk

crowd at stellar’s kiosk

the other restaurant stall we wanted to try was stellar at 1-altitutde. used to be on amex palate but seems that no more. i wouldn’t really go there w/o palate discounts.

there was a good crowd. we were early at about 6pm. later the crowd & queue were longer & we did not have enough interest to stand in queue for other food.

stellar's wagyu burger

stellar’s wagyu burger

i thought stellar’s wagyu burger was quite good, and S$18 price was quite fine too. when i was in the queue, a young mother was just ahead of me. she had bought 1 already & was ordering 2 more & telling the server she wanted it more cooked as her young child could not take the medium rare.

bought 1 & ordered 2 more. that gave me some confidence haha!^^

stellar's wagyu burger2

wagyu & onions were tasty with simple seasoning. the brioche also quite nice. 1 of my wife’s friend couple came so we shared & had a quarter each. 🙂

i quite liked this wagyu burger. it’s something that worked for me.^^

the pea veloute was pretty ok. i think it was S$12. always like pea soup.

gourmet vegetables?

so we didn’t spend much of the S$90 each, and used up all the money buying groceries, like japanese strawberries, yuzu, italian iberico ham etc.

would i come for this again? for myself, probably not. don’t think my wife interested either. with some friends, not so hot but don’t mind doing too. there were other food we could try. 🙂

Marvellous Robatayaki & Teppanyaki Set Lunch @ Mikuni on 30Mar2015

golden prawns

golden prawns

mikuni has marvellous new robatayaki & teppanyaki lunch sets. it’s a better deal the the regular lunch teppan set, only that you have to sit at the robatayaki table or teppan table.

i went there with my god-sis & daughter of a close friend on 30.3.2015.^^

prawn crackers

prawn crackers

we were served the usual prawn crackers. 🙂

the teppan menu included great dishes like golden prawns, miso cod & australian tenderloin.

the robatayaki set had scallop, mackerel, & kagoshima wagyu & kurobuta robatayaki, and ended with a nishin soba. quite excellent!

i ordered the robatayaki set & the 2 ladies ordered the teppan set.

salad

salad

we had the salad greens with the usual goma (sesame) sauce.

chawan mushi

and a good chawan mushi too. 🙂

there was an excellent kagoshima wagyu skewer.

the kurobuta tsukune skewer was tasty too & i like the silky egg yoke dip like in sukiyaki.

the teppan set had all the favourite dishes like miso cod & golden prawns (top photo).

and we all love the penna cotta. really good.

the teppan set would be an easy winner for most diners. both the cod & gold prawns were very good. the robatayaki set had japanese wagyu, but it was a small portion, so overall the teppan set gave much better balance all round.

the lunch set was S$34++pax after 50% feed at raffles (FAR Card) discounts, quite a steal!^^

Poor Dimsum at Sweet Dynasty 糖朝 on 6Apr2015

steamed pork ribs & chicken feet rice

steamed pork ribs & chicken feet rice

we had some time in the morning before flight departure on 6.4.2015.

originally we were booked for lunch at lei gardens at elements mall where we would be doing a city check-in to the flight & taking the airport express. but because the lunch at lei gardens times square was really a let down, quite unsatisfactory, we canceled the reservation  at elements.

also we had to refund the standard on-loan octopus card we bought on arrival. we purchased the octopus card at hk$150 inclusive hk$100 stored value & hk$50 refundable deposit, but only used about hk$30. there was discounts per trip but also an admin fee of hk$9 for refund so we did not save much however the octopus card gave great convenient taking the mtr & the star ferry, and if we had take the city bus or tram too. 🙂

及第粥 mixed congee

及第粥 mixed congee

we did not want to go to yat lok at central or to cam’s at wanchai, so we walked around looking for a roast goose stall.

in the end we settled on sweet dynasty 糖朝. we used to frequent it when it was at canton road. we liked especially the congee & also the rice topped with steamed pork ribs, chicken feet or chicken with mushrooms. it relocated to hankow road a few years back.

we again ordered the steamed pork ribs & chicken feet rice. it was really good especially drizzled with the mildly sweet sauce. this was where i modelled my hk style steamed sausage, mushroom & chicken rice (香汁蒸蘑菇鸡饭).

ate too much rice as a result.

及第粥 mixed congee

及第粥 mixed congee

we had the 及第粥 mixed congee. congee is always good, very smooth. the pig stomach & innards i liked & my wife took the kidney & liver, so pretty good for all.

but it was no better than the congee at canton paradise OR at crystal jade. 🙂

fried carrot cake

XO fried carrot cake

XO fried carrot cake was good, flavourful, nothing special & not my favourite.

roast duck & soy sauce chicken

roast duck & soy sauce chicken

the roast duck (not goose) was quite pathetic actually, felt like reheat in microwave oven zero crispiness in the skin (actually must not order this next time if there is a next time)-

can forget about comparing with yat lok roast goose.

not even as good as joyful palace at clementi food loft, not even comparing with canton paradise excellent roast duck.

the soy sauce chicken looked miserable but the breast meat was actually moist, tender & sweet. actually better than the complimentary roast chicken at superstar restaurant the evening before. 🙂

black sesame tau huay

black sesame tau huay

the black sesame tau huay is my wife’s favourite.

somehow this time i did not find any attraction there.

we paid like hk$450 at sweet dynasty 糖朝, 50% more than the excellent dimsum at timhowan & nothing like it, & quite ex really at S$80 for 3pax for hk dimsum…of course in singapore it would cost about that for better food.

Good Value Saga Wagyu 佐贺和牛 6-course Set @ Superstar on 5Apr2015

japanese wagyu

saga wagyu 佐贺和牛

what was very good value but perhaps not the best in culinary sophistication was the premium saga wagyu 6-course dinner set we had at the flagship stall of the superstar group restaurant on 5.4.2015.

there was uncertainty from the beginning that this what looked like a very traditional chinese kind of restaurant could manage a wagyu steak well. superstar group do have teppanya & 燒肉牛蔵(和牛專門店yakiniku gyukura restaurants, so initially i booked yakiniku gyukura but they replied that the wagyu set was only served in 2 superstar restaurants & recommended their flagship at tsim sha tsui mansion at nathan road.

premium wagyu 6-course set

premium saga wagyu 佐贺和牛 6-course set

there was nothing to fault really about the menu & quality of ingredients. the preparation & presentation though was not quite the best.

geoduck sashimi

geoduck sashimi

wife wanted to go light after too much eating & decided not to take the set, and instead just ordered a mirugai (geoduck) sashimi. it was good. not a big portion, can’t remember now but probably hk$298.

geoduck sashimi was sweet & succulent, but it was a small geoduck clam, so it was nearer the ends & did not have the large inside flesh that the excellent if expensive geoduck platter we had at  budaoweng 不倒翁 hotpot at isquare.

crispy roast chicken

crispy roast chicken

& the restaurant gave us a fee 1/2 roast chicken, apparently for any spending above hk$200. not the best chicken, still it was pretty good.

crystal pork & tofu

crystal pork & tofu

set started with crystal pork 肴肉& deep-fried tofu. both were competent in look & taste for a good chinese restaurant. tofu was crispy outside & silky inside. 🙂

sharksfin soup

sharksfin soup

sharkskin with compoy & fishmaw was average, not the standard of good chinese restaurant sharkskin soup.

japanese wagyu

japanese wagyu

the main draw was the japanese saga wagyu 佐贺和牛. they were pricing it at a special hk$308 for 100g & hk$498 for the set.

we asked for medium rare, which according to them was 五分熟 50% cooked. it came about medium rare to rare. beef was very marbled. the piece looked bigger than 100g. anyway japanese saga wagyu at about S$55/100g was a good price.

it was indeed a very good steak, good marbling melt in the mouth. i felt though that somehow the temperature was not right. it was not charred enough (not enough maillard reaction to impart the flavours) & the meat felt like steamed, somehow the marbling, fragrant flavours were not quite there.

don’t know but just did not have the memorable “wowed-over” feeling that we had at imahan hakata at fukuoka!

nor also the excellent A4 ohmi wagyu at me@oue.

my own chargrilled wagyu steak

for comparison, my own chargrilled wagyu steak

well, it was not even as flavourful as my own chargrilled wagyu steak! (above photo).

maybe belief is important? lack of belief affects taste. don’t know!

stonefish soup

stonefish soup

stonefish soup was very tasty. it was their signature dish. as a accompanying side dish for a premium wagyu 6-course set, i thought it was very good. not sure it could be consider a top signature dish standalone.

stonefish soup

minced wagyu fried rice

the minced wagyu beef fried rice was to me also average though son thought it was very good. i thought it did not have the same wok hae & intense flavours like-

the unagi chahan (fried rice say) at either zen OR en japanese dining; nor

the fragrant spicy fried rice at crystal jade lamian xiaolongbao.

baked lotus paste sago

baked lotus paste sago

the baked lotus paste sago was a attempted fusion dessert dish. hmmm…i would prefer a creme brûlée or portugese egg tart the ones at marco polo continental club lounge was exquisite!

will i go back again??? i wonder myself….

on paper, this should be a very good deal. but actually i can do without the other dishes (nothing much there to miss really) and just take the wagyu at hk$308. still hk$308 is a bit of money, and not sure i want to leave my fate with the chef and hope for a hk$308 wagyu to turn out for the best. hmmm…

Expensive Below-par Food @ Lei Gardens Times Square on 5Apr2015

venus clams with sweet peas

venus clams with sweet peas

had expensive below par lunch today at lei gardens @ times square on 5.4.2015.

this was so different from the excellent lunch i had at 2 michelin star lei gardens at tsai yee street洗衣街 ‎mongkok outlet in 2013.

they had 2 seating & we booked 11.30am. we went to have a short walk at the mid-level escalators & stanley street & decided to eat some small portion of roast goose at yat lok.

so maybe we were a bit full & not great appetite.

lei gardens times square

lei gardens times square

service was quite polite actually. these days service pretty ok though they were always busy to have much time with you.

lie tong 鸡骨草例汤

lie tong 鸡骨草例汤

we had a lie tong 鸡骨草例汤. HK$148 for 1pot, maybe should have the 1/2pot HK$98.

it was ok i guess, but these days, my helper made such great soup on the slow cooker at home. also my memory of 鸡骨草例汤 at imperial treasure nanbei was that it was such a tasty soup this one really paled in comparison.

chicken feet in abalone sauce

chicken feet in abalone sauce

we ordered the hicken feet braised in abalone sauce HK$42. wife & son preferred the usual dimsum deep-fried chicken feet which we found out was just hk$32. 🙂

my son said he did not realise how nice the dimsum at timhowan were until compared with the much poorer ones here. in fact i think all of crystal jade, imperial treasure, tunglok & canton paradise are better.

radish pastry

radish pastry

the radish pastry was ok.

char siew fun cheong

char siew fun cheong

the char siew fun cheong was poor. skin was very doughy & tough.

noodles in lobster broth

noodles in lobster broth

we took the recommendations which had the venus clams with sweet beans (top photo) & the noodles in lobster broth combination for HK$298.

the venus clams was the only dish that was good. the lobster broth noodles was tasteless, really a surprise for me. somehow the food did not agree with us.

Street Food Yat Lok Roast Goose & 新源牛腩牛杂面 on 4 & 5Apr2015

beef noodles soup 新源牛腩牛杂面

beef noodles soup 新源牛腩牛杂面

we had a most enjoyable lunch at amber at landmark oriental mandarin plus there were great hors doeuvre at marco polo continental club lounge evening cocktail, so we did not plan for dinner on 4.4.2015.

beef noodles soup 新源牛腩牛杂面

beef noodles soup 新源牛腩牛杂面

i wanted to try my favourite beef brisket noodles, so i took a short walk from our hotel on canton to hankow road where 新源noodles stall was located. it was expensive here, single item was hk$45. i ordered a combo 牛腩牛杂面, so it was hk$55.

beef noodles soup 新源牛腩牛杂面

beef noodles soup 新源牛腩牛杂面

新源 had several stalls in the area & i used to have them & they were good. however this time it was quite mediocre. soup was average not very sweet & flavourful. likewise the briskets. the stomach & lung were more infused with flavours. overall it was not very satisfactory.

any of the 牛腩面 i took anywhere previously was better than this e.g. at shamshuipo the last time (& indeed even at the food republic on canton road).

金湖牛腩面

金湖牛腩面

& the price was exorbitant!

later as i passed by haiphong road on the way back to hotel, i recalled that this golden lake stall (above photo) was pretty good too, & the price i saw was hk$33 c/w hk$45 at 新源!

so we thought we would go to central, walk along the mid level escalators & steal a bite at yat lok roast goose at stanley street.

yat lok roast goose HK$140 drumstick quarter

yat lok roast goose HK$140 drumstick quarter

to me, Yat Lok 一乐 has the best roast goose in hong kong. but of course i did not try many in hong kong to make the comparison. i had it at yung kee, at food republic on canton road, at 1 michelin star tim’s kitchen & at restaurants like tau heung’s 稻香超级渔港 previously. yat lok’s was by far the best.

it did not disappoint this time. we ordered a hk$140 drumstick quarter to share. my wife & son all enjoyed it very much.^^

Sumptuous Weekend Wine Brunch @ Amber Landmark Mandarin Oriental on 4Apr2015

#2 whole abalone with braised oxtail sauce

#2 whole abalone with braised oxtail sauce

wife booked 3pax weekend wine brunch at amber at landmark mandarin oriental on 4.4.2015.^^

amber has 2 michelin stars 6 years in a row & is the no.4 in asia & no.24 in pellegrino’s world’s top 50 restaurants.

this 1 of the places you have to leave credit card details and will be charged in full if you cancel within 48hrs. i am not sure if it is a new practice but we booked 2pax degustation dinner at joel robuchon maybe 4yrs ago & did not have to do that. & we had been to caprice at four seasons, and pierre at the other mandarin oriental and did not have to do that.

anyway we were happy to try out this place, and our faith were more than rewarded. this was simply the best meal we had in hong kong, not comparing joel robuchon’s degus dinner which cost more than twice this lunch.

baguette, olive & onion bread

baguette, olive & onion bread

after a very pleasant morning stroll along the peak circle walk taking in the hong kong skyline, we took a cab form the peak to landmark mandarin oriental which only cost us hk$55.

we started with a nice champagne.

the baguette and olive & onion bread from the bread basket were warm & very good, with both salted & unsalted butter.

6-course weekend wine brunch with 4 paragons of wine (champagne, 2 whites, 1 red)

6-course weekend wine brunch with 4 paragons of wine (champagne, 2 whites, 1 red)

weekend wine brunch was a 6-course (though that included cheese & 2 desserts) with selection of 4 wines at hk$888.

we found out that it was really an excellent deal even c/w weekday set lunches w/o the wine. so it was an excellent decision & wonderful lunch.

my son & i picked the foie gras terrine with suckling pig (interleaved) as our first course. it was very good, very flavourful & substantial.

#1 hokkaido sea urchin with caviar

#1 hokkaido sea urchin with caviar

wife picked the hokkaido sea urchin in lobster jelly with caviar topped with a gold leaf (which came with a hk$260 supplement). uni was sublime of course but the S$46+ supplement made no sense to us.

#1 hokkaido sea urchin with caviar

#1 hokkaido sea urchin with caviar

we all love uni of course, but we are not short of taking them, and we had whole tub of uni in japan for 1500yen (fukuoka recently) & lots of them at kuriya dining for the S$62 chirashi lunch with big serving of uni.

uni is uni. no culinary skill involved, is there?

#2 whole abalone with braised oxtail sauce

#2 whole abalone with braised oxtail sauce

#2 whole abalone with braised oxtail sauce

#2 whole abalone with braised oxtail sauce

second course was served with another white chardonnay.

for the second course, wife & i had the whole abalone that came with braised oxtail sauce & oxtail!

it was really well done. the abalone was so well braised or sous vide it was pure tender & the oxtail sauce was an excellent match. the 2 pieces of oxtail were also very tender & tasty & robust. wife loved this though for me, i still prefer the chinese or japanese braised abalone in brown sauce, and the chinese dry abalone over the japanese fresh ones.

son decided to venture a bit & took the battered frog legs. i tried a bit. I must say it was very good, enough for me to say that fie the choice of the whole abalone & the frog leg (it was a no brainer before), i am not sure i will automatically pick abalone every time. 🙂

#3 sole with mussels & razor clams

#3 sole with mussels & razor clams

the mains were served with a selection of red. we picked the spanish wine which was very good.

for the 3rd course, wife had the sole with mussels & razor clams. i think it was excellent, the best you could do with a fish. the sole was very tasty, tender and also firm in texture.

we had 2 plates of the cheese platter above for 3pax. it was lots of cheese. i liked all 3 cheese = reblochon, comte & camembert. i liked comte best, very flavourful almost like blue.

raspberry mousse + chestnut mousse on meringue with pear

victoria harbour

victoria harbour – IFC on the right

as marco polo hk is near to the star ferry terminal, instead of walking to tsimshatsui mtr station we decided to take the ferry to star ferry central pier. ferry was hk$2.80pax (hk$2.0 mon-fri). took 9minutes. we found out the next day that it was hk$3.40 (hk$2.50 on mon-fri) on the upper deck. we used our octopus card so it was a breeze.^^ star ferry was voted the best ferry ride in the world by The Society of American Travel Writers (SATW). you can see why. you get the skyline of central with IFC towering prominently.

in my last trip i had dinner at rainbow restaurant on lama island, & the free ferry provided by the restaurant took us past the night lights of aberdeen, with enchanting views of deep water bay & repulse bay, forming a beautiful neckless. it was a wonderful sight.

as we were 3pax & it’s a long way from central pier to the peak tram. so we planned to take a taxi which was at the taxi stand at central pier, no waiting. it was a nice journey up victoria peak costing hk$65. the cost of the peak tram was hk$28 single & hk$40 return & you could expect a very long queue on an easter weekend!

taxi deposited us at the peak market side opposite the peak tower tram station. nice view of aberdeen, deep water bay & repulse bay direction.

the peak tower

the peak tower

the peak tower is an icon. you could see people on the sky terrace. it is exorbitant, hk$83 if you combine with peak tram return, otherwise hk$48 & you can again expect long queues.

we took the peak circle walk. it’s about 3.6km and took 1 hr on a flat paved road. usually we took harlech road,

the last i was here with friends 2years ago in 2013, we decided to go to pak fu lam reservoir & did not take the peal circle walk.

this time we took lugard road as wife wanted to view the hk skyline first. above photo is peak tower from the start of lugard road. usually we see it at the end starting the circle walk from harlech road.

we took a taxi to landmark mandarin oriental where we were having lunch at amber. it cost hk$55 & point to point rather than queueing for the peak tram then walk few km.^^
