Tasty Food Kind of Expensive @ Por Kee on 27Mar2019

3pax OPS bro lunch at por kee

my OPS bro HC bought 3pax lunch at prok kee tiong bahrun on 27.3.2019. ^^

i think i only came this place once like 20+ to 30yrs ago. it is certainly a well known and popular zi char place.

seabass

seabass thai teochew style

friend ordered a seabass thai teochew style.

it was good. the soupy sauce was tasty and tangy, quite perfect actually, and the meat was fresh and quite firm for a seabass. certainly better than expectations.

pork ribs

the pork ribs were good too, tasty.

it had though a slght porky taste, umlike the 7th mile pork ribs which were superb, so not really the same standard.

tofu

tofu dish was competent, i guess as good as any.

smabal potato leaves

and the sambal potato leaves among the better ones at zi char places.

3pax lunch dishes at por kee

we had a great lunch and wonderful time with close bros, missing WT who is in shanghai at this time.

3pax lunch came to S$91 nett, kind of ex…

Delicious Seafood @ Ah Yat Grandstand on 26Mar2019

3 RI bro dinner

our RI bro CCG bought QTC and I 3pax dinner at ah yat grandstand this evening on 26.3.2019.

ah yat dinner dishes

alaskan crab beehon was great as usual, and the pepper and salted egg crabs were good too.

garlic steamed razor clams S$6.80 each

we started with garlic steamed razor clams.

always good here, just right doneness and very delicious hk steamed sauce with garlic. 🙂

alaskan crab tanhoon

alaskan crab tanhoon

alaskan crab tabhoon very tasty as always.

this evening we had fewer serving of crabs c/w my recent time here, but i guess that can be variable.

ginger scallion frog 3 frogs xS$4.50 eahc

the ginger scallion frog could have been better. frog very slightly overdone so not as tender and moist as my recent time here. also the 3 frogs did not seem more than the 2 frogs i had last here recently.

salted egg crab = 2 crabs S$39.90

pepper crabs – 2 crabs S$39.90

lobster price S$39. there was no cheaper lobster today.

so we decided to order 2x500g crabs for S$39.90 and made pepper crab and salted egg crab.

crab was fresh, sweet and tasty. the pepper crab was more flavourful. the salted egg crab was good too.

3pax dinner was S$146. quite good really for the food we had.

Very Good Wagyu Beef Cubes 4pax dinner @Silk SICC on 23Mar2019

roast combintion

a good friend SMM and wife bought 4pax dinner at silk sicc this evening on 2.3.2019.^^

the duck, char siew and siew yoke were all good. peach garden siew yoke still better la. 🙂

silk sicc

nice calligraphy. i must practice this later.

pepper beef

the pepper beef was really good, supper tender. wife and i not tried this here before.

the service staff here not knowledgeable. earlier we asked for chrysantemum with 枸杞 wolfberries. 2 staff came. both had no clue what was 枸杞 wolfberries. this time i asked was the where the beef from? was it wagyu? service staff came back after checking and said from australia but she no clue about wagyu.

otherwie service attitude was good. just knowledge not good.

sea perch thai style

today sea perch came with thai green spicy sauce. not the crispy sea perch with thai sweet sour sauce we wanted but it was good to try a new dish.

it was good too, just very sour and spicy and too salty. wife and i prefer the crispy perch.

asparagus

asparagus was competent.

braised prawns beehoon

the fresh prawns braised beehoon was very good. always good!

beehoon very flavourful well infused with stock. prawns just 4 pieces very small serving, lots of beehoon. luckily beehoon very tasty all finished.

i will do braised beehoon again, either white beehoon or this style.

cake

braised prawns beehoon

it was a wonderful dinner with good friends. we don’t meet often…it was good sharing and fellowship

Mediocre Food 4pax early Birthday Dinner @ Peach Gardens Metropolis on 22Mar2019

siew yoke and char siew

had 4pax dinner at peach gardens metropolic, early celebration for sil birthday on 22.3.2019.

food not that great leh…

buddha jump over the wall S$48

ordered S$48 buudha jump over the wall for sil. tasted it..i think my own bjotw much better, my broth much tastier.

sharks cartilage soup S$26

seafood thick soup S$10

ordered shark cartilage soup for brother, didn’t try it but i think it was good!

I ok with our seafood soup wife didn’t like.

siew yoke and char siew

siew yoke very good

char siew good though wife said a bit sweet & some parts not tender..i think my own char siew just as good.

meicai steamed with sea perch

meicai sea perch was good as before. 🙂

yuzu crispy sea perch

but wife said crispy perch with yuzu too sweet not nice.

fried prawns and scallops with broccoli

fried prawns and scallops with broccoli

prawn and scallops with broccoli mediocre. and scallop tasted like fake plastic

crabmeat tofu with spinach

crabmeat with tofu was a good dish.

horfun

the horfum was poor, no wokhae, any zi char will do better.

杨枝甘露with ice cream

brother liked the 杨枝甘露with ice cream.

chataraise cream cake S$20

i called prior confirmed no cakeage charge here. the chataraise cream cake so so. not great.

siew yoke and char siew

overall not good standard below par for an average chain like peach garden.

even though with eatigo discounts, dinner for 4pax was S$154 nett, mainly because the bjotw and sharks cartilage soup were expensive.

mala braised chicken with veg

made braised chicken and potatoes for teban gardens community breakfast this morning on w.3.2019.^^

this my 87th friday breakfast community meal dish at teban gardens community service centre.

Wonderful Lobster and Alaskan Crab Tanhoon Dinner @ Ah Yat Grandstand on 20Mar2019

2pax dinner

had 2pax dinner with wife at ah yat grandstand on 20.3.2019. ^^

didn’t come here for a while.

business seemed to have drop, not many tables occupied.

food still good, prices gone up a bit.

garlic steamed razor clams S$6.80

garlic steamed razor clams S$6.80

razor clams garlic steamed was good as usual. relative to other restuarants which charge S$10-S$12, this price is good, but at a time it was just S$4.80, and a razor clam shouldn’t cost this much…

alaskan crab tanhoon S$42

the server said i had not been here long time and price only went up S$4 from S$38. i laughed.

it was really good! tanhoon so super tasty!

i must do my prawn tanhoon again la…

and we had like 8 pieces of crab legs, which were fresh and meaty and tasty..

alaskan crab tanhoon S$42

good stuff for the price…

lobster in superior stock S$25

lobster in superior stock S$25

live lobster price gone up to S$39 from S$29.80. of course even at S$39 it is a lot cheaper than most restaurants which charge S$60+.there were 2 dead lobster on ice, so we inquired.

satisfied that the lobster was fresh, we ordered that (in many western or newton circle or bbq restaurants, its always on ice, and in markets we buy fish and prawns all dead).

the lobster turned out beautifully, fresh, bouncy, sweet. wife and i couldn’t tell any difference from what we usually eat. i guess we took a risk if it had turned out poorly but still edible…

and steamed with superior stock 上汤焗was just perfect!

ginger onion frogs = 2 bullfrogs S$9

ginger onion frogs = 2 bullfrogs S$9

the best deal here really the bull frogs 田鸡.

i mean even here at ah yat, a lala dish would cost .S$10 and in many zi char and restaurants S$18.

and the ginger onion frogs 姜葱炒here is first class, better than most restaurants and zi char.

bill for 2pax dinner

dinner was S$112. of course this could feed 3 or even 4pax.

and lobster and alaskan crab are expensive stuff.

alaskan crab tanhoon

a really satisfying and enjoyable dinner. slurp!

added a new dish stirfried garoupa with onions, leek & chilli-super wokhae excellent dish👍👍

I will make the garoupa dish and meicai dish myself 🙂

fish meat noodles

tea flavoured roast duck S$32

the tea flavoured roast duck here among the best roast duck i had.

meicai kailan S$20

meicai kailan was very good. mei cai was tender and the mild, sweet flavour stood out.

wife found the kailan a bit tough. for me they were ok.

garoupa fillet leek onions and peppers S$38

the garoupa fillet was an excellent dish, great flavours, very different from the pedestrian one at first culianry and the poor one at peach garden metropolis.

fish meat noodles S$20

the fish neat noodles was good as before. i do feel the broth was less tasty than previously.

ice jelly, aloe vera, ice cream

wife ordered a dessert we shared. a good dessert but i can do without.

tea flavoured roast duck and meicai kailan

today we had a new dish garoupa fillet and of course the fish noodles was relatively new dish, second time i ordered.

food was great, we had a fun and enjoyable walk with friends and excellent dinner afterwards.

Good 4pax Lunch @ First Culinary AMK on 19Mar2019

half roast duck S$27

had 4pax lunch with RI bro CCG, and OPS bros HC and WM at first culinary restaurant at ITE college central amk on 19.3.2019. ^^

there is a eatigo 50% discount at 11am. i was here last week, and food was good and great value for the price.

4pax lunch

today i ordered mostly different dishes to try out the menu.:-)

sea treasures soup S$25

sea treasures soup S$25

the sea treasures soup was a nice soup, though the fishmaw soup we had last week (S$30) was a much better soup. 🙂

half roast duck S$27

the roast duck at S$27 was a good dish, not to forget we had 50% discounts!

however today the duck had a “soh mei” meaning a strong gamey taste, not great! i fed back to the restaurant afterwards.

KL char siew S$15

KL char siew S$15

KL char siew was good, though maybe a little sweet. but i guess char siew are mostly slightly sweet.

garoupa fillet with broccoli in XO sauce S$38

garoupa fillet was just competent only. i had much better ones before.

garoupa fillet with broccoli in XO sauce

passable la!

seafood tofu

seafood tofu

seafood tofu kind of unique in presentation.

taste wise tofu was tender and refine, sauce was good, seafood mediocre. a good dish overall.

garoupa fillet meesua

and this time i ordered some carbs. the meesua came with garoupa fillet and green peppers, again competent, as good this one.

having tried the various dishes last week and this, if i come again i would take the fishmaw, KL charsiew, chef sauce pork ribs, hesitate about the roast duck, ok with garoupa meesua. maybe try the roast pork and the toman fillet dish.

Braised Chicken and Potatoes – 86th Teban Gardens Community Breakfast on 15Mar2019

braised chicken with potatoes

made braised chicken and potatoes for teban gardens community breakfast this morning on 15.3.2019.^^

this my 86th friday breakfast community meal dish at teban gardens community service centre.

i first started doing a community meal dish for teban gardens CSC on 8.1.2016.

the centre was started in 2002 after much effort & challenge by our RI friend who is a pastor of pasir panjang hill brethren church (pphbc) which owns & runs the CSC.

braised chicken with potatoes

this my regular dish, so quite straight forward.

just clean and drain 2kg cut chicken. then marinate with 2 tbsp of fish sauce, oyster sauce, light soy sauce, cornflour and sesame oil overnight in fridge.

braised chicken with potatoes

fry chicken with chopped garlic till cooked in the morning, cover about 6mins. add little water if required.

removed chicken and use the sauce to cook 6 large cut potatoes. add water if required. oiled 10mins to cook poatoes and reduce sauce. poke chopstick clean through or press potato against side of wok to break. that would be perfect doneness.

Great Evening, Delicious Food with Good Friends on 14Mar2019

5pax dinner dishes

made 5pax dinner for my good friends this evening on 14.3.2019.^^

for J for her special diet-
1. poached seabream fillet ikan bilis soup
2. oven grilled saba with sea salt
3 pan grilled portobello with sea salt

for 4 of us-
1 poached seabream fillet chicken broth
2 claypot rice
3 tofu prawns
4 fried romaine lettuce
5 fried hk kailan

J brought vinegared saba from japan.

CL brought flores birthday cake for CCG.

vinegared saba

i like the vinegared saba. japanese cured and pickled stuff all added sugar and a bit sweet. wife and CCG didn’t take.

seabream soup

for J’s seabream soup i used only ikan bilis, so i added a larger seabream fillet to give it natural fish sweetness.

when serving i poached sliced seabream fillet and added few leaves of organic chye sim per J’ request.

seabream soup

for the 4 of us, i used chicken broth, intense chicken stock, added sliced ginger.

and poached sliced seabream fillet and added organic chye sim.

fish was fresh and the broth was very tasty. ^^

grilled saba

grilled saba

i did grilled saba, first time for me.

the saba i bought from sheng shion was very fresh, could feel pressing on the flesh and belly – firm and bouncy.

i rubbed sea salt inside cavity and outside and grilled on a rack in 250degC oven for 15mins. quite perfect – natural taste of the sea, very fresh, sweet and tasty. J, CL, i all enjoyed the grilled saba.

(i had 1 more saba in the chiller so i made another for J the next day)

pangrilled portobello

pangrilled portobello

the pangrilled portobello had only sea salt so a bit lacking in taste.

could do with the usual olive oil, balsamic and drizzle of agave nextar. the dish mainly prepared for J so didn’t add.

claypot rice

made claypot rice for CCG. he mentioned during our recent 10pax dinner.

today’s claypot rice was excellent, great aroma and great, and super tender, moist, tasty chicken, breast and all.

claypot rice

quite perfect claypot rice. 🙂

prawn tofu

today’s prawn tofu also among my best.

nicely shallowfried tofu well infused with chicken stock, and prawns perfectly done, just cooked, succulent and bouncy.

fried kailan

fried kailan

romaine lettuce

romaine lettuce

fried kailan and romaine lettuce were quite regular stuff.

seabream soup

seabream soup

for preparation, just ikan bilis stock with large seabream fillet for taste, then poached sliced seabream fillet and add organic chye sim when serving.

fried tofu for prawn tofu dish

prawn tofu

for prawn tofu just shallow fried 300g tofu cut into 12 pieces.

then fried chopped garlic, cut chilli, add 1cup chicken stock and 1 tbsp oyster sauce, 1tbsp flat corn flour and reduced to taste, then add 1 egg, let it formed then draw out the egg.

when serving, add prawns, mix and cover to cook prawns, about 3mins, serve!

flore cake

CL brought a nice birthday cake from flore.

claypot rice

had a wonderful evening, nice food and great company and conversation. 🙂

Expensive Average Soi 19 Thai Style Wantonmee on 13Mar2019

soi 19 thau wantonmee

son bought thai wanton noodles at soi 19 holland village on 13.3.2019.^^

very expensive! like $5.50 small for me $6.50 large for son.

2pax lunch with son

soi 19 thau wantonmee

soi 19 thau wantonmee

soi 19 thau wantonmee

noodles looked plain but were tasty enough. char siew was good, lots of larpok (crispy lard), a small and simple dish, quite tasty.

but i think fatty thai S$4 wanton mee at beach road was better, tastier, cheaper and larger serving..

also this wanton mee no better/tastier than jian kang wanton mee which just S$3 and you add S$1 for 3 pieces very tender and tasty pork ribs.

or 6th ave or queens road wantonmee..still kok kee wantonmee best for me

the chicken was poor & very expensive at $7! no comparison with my own 白斩鸡.

a friend told me later the stall not related to the soi 19 at banglok.

soi 19 thai wantonmee

S$7 chicken

dumplings

dumplings was ok, like any other.

soi 19 thau wantonmee

didn’t mind this especially when son  bought lunch.

not my kind of place when there are many other options cheaper, bigger serving and equal or better tasting.

4pax Homecooked Lunch with Bro, Sis BIL on 11Mar2019

4pax lunch dishes

today bro, sis & bil came over for lunch on 11.3.2019. ^^.

i made 4 dishes.

mullet and large yellow croaker

mullet and large yellow croaker

chilled mullet and yellow croaker are teochew favorites, perfect taken together with taujeon.

not much difference in quality eating out or homecook (i would say my homecooked mostly better). just a lot cheaper homecooked.

i bought 2 mullet for S$9.80 and the very large yellow croaker (>50% larger than normal size) for S$8.90.

very fresh and sweet. both very good, myself i still prefer the mullet.

garlic hk steamed sotong

garlic hk steamed sotong

garlic hk steamed the easiest to prepare and super nice.

sotong these days more ex than fish. at sheng shiong it’s like S$15.90 to S$18.90.

today’s large sotong >300g so i would be cost >S$5 ie more expensive than the mullet.

fried shitake mushrooms with mala sauce

i made some fried shitake with mala sauce. this was excellent and perfect the other day. today, not enough mala sauce.
