Royal Plaza Hotel & Mongkok Locality Hong Kong 10-14Jan2016

royal plaza hotel

royal plaza hotel

for this hong kong trip 10-14.1.2016, we looked at hotels in tsimshatsui but they were expensive. the one i stayed often when traveling with wife was kowloon hotel, next to peninsula.

this time it was expensive though, & really the rooms were small & it’s 4 stars. so were other hotels at tsimshatsui, small & expensive.

the last time i traveled with sister, we stayed at royal park at shatin.

it was excellent 5 star hotel, & it was just HK$754+/night.

and you can take airport bus A41 direct to royal park hotel, just 2 stops, 50mins & HK$22.3,

but it was a little less convenient traveling tsimshatsui & hong kong island etc.

this time, after considering various options we decided on royal plaza at mongkok east, at HK$1260+/night.

one friend traveling with us had his family of 4 with him & they had a tsuishatsui airbnb apartment for 1 week. we decided not to stay at tsimshatsui but at least staying at royal plaza, it was easier to co-ordinate & meet.

the considerations for royal plaza-

  1. 5 stars, room is huge 33m2, 2 queenbeds, very comfortable.
  2. royal plaza located right at mongkok east mtr station on the east rail line, and is connected by covered walkway to mongkok mtr station on tseun wan line, and in between there is street markets, and many nice eating places.
  3. & since this time we were going mainly to tsimshatsui, central, central pier & dragon’s back, the mongkok location was quite perfect for our purpose.
  4. there were 6 of us so getting to royal plaza by taxi was quite fine, 2 taxis of 3pax, costing about HK$260, not much different from taking airport express.

must say that though royal plaza is located alongside sun hung kai property’s MOKO Mall, we did not bother to look around the mall itself.

indo maids at covered walkway mongkok on a sunday 10.1.2016

we arrived on a sunday 10.1.2016. after checking in, we went to look for fu kee congee 富记粥品 at fa yuen street 花园街.

first time we were there but we read about the roast goose & congee. we were NOT disappointed. in fact we went back 2 days later for another go. ^^

it was quite easy to look for fa yuen street 花园街, though the first time, we were quite lost trying just to get out of MOKO mall. once we saw the direction signs, everything was quite straightforward.

indo maids at covered walkway mongkok on a sunday 10.1.2016

indo maids at covered walkway mongkok on a sunday 10.1.2016

as it was a sunday, the covered walkways to mongkok mtr station & fa yuen street 花园街 enroute was filled with indo maids. i guess in the same way as filipino maids filled up kowloon park. anyway people do need a place to gather & socialise.

street food

street food

after our excellent dinner at fu kee congee 富记粥品, we walked around fa yuen street 花园街 & neighbouring streets.

first we past the fa yuen street market 花园街街市.

the we walked round the street night market.

we stopped by one of many skewer stalls.

actually we were attracted by stinking tofu臭豆腐aroma. 🙂

selling ornamental fishes

selling ornamental fishes

they have the instant ready-packed way of selling guppies & other ornamental fishes. maybe they do that in singapore too these days? not sure.

we liked the royal plaza location. i think i will stay there again my next visit to hong kong, of course subject to price, other options & the convenient base to visit the places we want to go.

Royal Park Hotel at Shatin & Shatin Park 2-6Jun2015

royal park hotel at shatin

royal park hotel at shatin

i chose royal park on  a balance of cost & convenience.

also, i had been to hong kong so many times but always stayed at pacific place hotels when on business decades ago & at tsimshatsui with family. can’t really know hong kong that way. afterall, the overwhelming consideration is still to have a relaxing fun break so i would generally not go out of the way & incur great inconvenience to do something. if stayed at tsimshatsui every time, then most likely will always be moving around there & central & causeway bay.

still, i checked out our usual hotel, kowloon hotel at tsimshatsui. it’s really very convenient location. the price was HK$800/night a night weekdays & HK$1000/night fridays, saturdays. so for 4nights HK$3400+.

for royal park hotel, it was some strange breakdown averaged HK$754, and totalled HK$3017+.

for comparison & other considerations-

1. royal park has large 30m2 rooms whereas kowloon hotel’s rooms are 20m2

2. i can take airport bus A41 direct to royal park hotel, just 2 stops, 50mins & HK$22.3, whereas for kowloon hotel it is by airport express to kowloon station HK$90 single HK$160 return, then free airport bus to kowloon hotel, about 4th or 5th stop

3. for this trip i was not going to ngong ping 360 to take the cable car see the big buddha, but when having plans to visit lautau island including hong kong disneyland, shatin very convenient by bus.

4. my sis is buddhist, and 10,000 buddha monastery is right at shatin.

royal park hotel at shatin

royal park hotel at shatin

we were happy with the room -big, bright & airy.

royal park hotel toilet

royal park hotel toilet

toilet was pretty ok too!

the other very satisfying things for me during this trip-

1. went to keung kee chicken porridge 强记鸡粥 which is at tai wei, just 1 stop from shatin

2. explore & found 富记大排档tai wai, which is also at tai wei.

3. explore & found chan kun kee 陈根记大排档, located at wo che estate, about 20mins walk from royal park hotel via the esplanade at shatin park 沙田公园by the river 城门河.

4. on the last day before departure, explore & found shing kee noodles at lek yuen sstate market, about 10mins from royal park hotel via covered walkway.

connecting area to shatin park 沙田公园by the river 城门河

on 4.6.2015, we decided to take a walk along the esplanade at shatin park 沙田公园by the river 城门河.

shatin public library

after exiting the hotel from the bar area at the lobby level, we walked along the connecting area to shatin park. the shatin public area was on our left.

across river view from shatin park 沙田公园by the river 城门河

hong kong is densely populated. across the river is another estate.

and walked along the esplanade.

there were many joggers & cyclists traversing the riverside promenade.

for me, shatin is quite suited for my hong kong trip as a base. tsimshatsui, central & causeway bay areas i can always go when already out for visits in the day, e.g. when traveling to the islands.

this trip, i have found several new daipaidongs & took dim sums at 4 different restaurants. for next trip, i can also explore from base at shatin or research a bit to see which other location & hotel may be more convenient.

A Relaxing Birthday Dinner at Tunglok Signature @ Central on 27May2015

salted egg prawns

salted egg prawns

last evening, my close dentist friend and godsis & her husband arranged a birthday dinner for another close friend at tunglok signature @ central on 27.5.2015. ^^

my wife & i & another friend joined dinner so there were 7pax.

birthday was several weeks before but some of us were away, anyway it was just fun to get together.

godsis was feeling rich & happy, and displayed great teamwork with her hubby, and managed to best my dentist friend to grab the bill at the end of dinner. 🙂

roast pork烧肉

roast pork烧肉

i just had salted egg prawns & roast pork烧肉 at a 13pax RI friends G20 dinner at peach garden @ metropolis the evening before, and that was good too.

we can see from the photos that the presentation & colours of the 2 dishes at tunglok were better. taste-wise they were close – the roast pork烧肉 about same, the salted egg prawns maybe tunglok a tad better. 🙂

deep-fried fish fillet (also salted egg)

deep-fried cod fish fillet (also salted egg)

deep-fried fish fillet (also salted egg)

deep-fried cod fish fillet (also salted egg)

we had the deep-fried cod fish fillet that seemed to be salted egg flavoured also. it was a well executed dish, somewhat oily. not really a preferred preparation for me.

the same dentist friend & mei mei had a birthday dinner for me in 2013 here at this same tunglok outlet. we had star garoupa fillet with broccoli & lily bulbs & that was very good. of course for me, steamed fish is the best. haha!^^

tunglok's 三层楼

tunglok’s 三层楼

we had the elegant 三层楼, which is a tunglok’s long standing dish of fried bean curd on spinach & shimeji mushrooms.

there was a newer dish of charcoal tofu with lily bulbs 百合.

both tofu dishes were very nice!

next was a string beans with egg plant. just mildly spicy (if any at all) & quite nicely done.

another dish was a bit unusual combination, some squash with japanese edamame & slightly sweet sauce. can’t figure out this dish.

Poor Dimsum at Sweet Dynasty 糖朝 on 6Apr2015

steamed pork ribs & chicken feet rice

steamed pork ribs & chicken feet rice

we had some time in the morning before flight departure on 6.4.2015.

originally we were booked for lunch at lei gardens at elements mall where we would be doing a city check-in to the flight & taking the airport express. but because the lunch at lei gardens times square was really a let down, quite unsatisfactory, we canceled the reservation  at elements.

also we had to refund the standard on-loan octopus card we bought on arrival. we purchased the octopus card at hk$150 inclusive hk$100 stored value & hk$50 refundable deposit, but only used about hk$30. there was discounts per trip but also an admin fee of hk$9 for refund so we did not save much however the octopus card gave great convenient taking the mtr & the star ferry, and if we had take the city bus or tram too. 🙂

及第粥 mixed congee

及第粥 mixed congee

we did not want to go to yat lok at central or to cam’s at wanchai, so we walked around looking for a roast goose stall.

in the end we settled on sweet dynasty 糖朝. we used to frequent it when it was at canton road. we liked especially the congee & also the rice topped with steamed pork ribs, chicken feet or chicken with mushrooms. it relocated to hankow road a few years back.

we again ordered the steamed pork ribs & chicken feet rice. it was really good especially drizzled with the mildly sweet sauce. this was where i modelled my hk style steamed sausage, mushroom & chicken rice (香汁蒸蘑菇鸡饭).

ate too much rice as a result.

及第粥 mixed congee

及第粥 mixed congee

we had the 及第粥 mixed congee. congee is always good, very smooth. the pig stomach & innards i liked & my wife took the kidney & liver, so pretty good for all.

but it was no better than the congee at canton paradise OR at crystal jade. 🙂

fried carrot cake

XO fried carrot cake

XO fried carrot cake was good, flavourful, nothing special & not my favourite.

roast duck & soy sauce chicken

roast duck & soy sauce chicken

the roast duck (not goose) was quite pathetic actually, felt like reheat in microwave oven zero crispiness in the skin (actually must not order this next time if there is a next time)-

can forget about comparing with yat lok roast goose.

not even as good as joyful palace at clementi food loft, not even comparing with canton paradise excellent roast duck.

the soy sauce chicken looked miserable but the breast meat was actually moist, tender & sweet. actually better than the complimentary roast chicken at superstar restaurant the evening before. 🙂

black sesame tau huay

black sesame tau huay

the black sesame tau huay is my wife’s favourite.

somehow this time i did not find any attraction there.

we paid like hk$450 at sweet dynasty 糖朝, 50% more than the excellent dimsum at timhowan & nothing like it, & quite ex really at S$80 for 3pax for hk dimsum…of course in singapore it would cost about that for better food.

Nice Lunch @ Rendervous at Central on 8Jan2015

beef curry

beef curry

went my to my close friend’s clinic for my troublesome implant. another close friend was scheduled for 6-monthly descaling, so we had lunch together afterwards.

our god-sis who helped out at the clinic, & my dentist friend’s daughter, also joined us for 5pax lunch at rendezvous at central on 8.1.2015. 🙂

lunch orders

lunch orders

friend insisted on paying. initially we ordered 5 dishes – mutton curry, beef curry (dentist friend’s daughter likes mutton & god-sis doesn’t take mutton), chicken curry, kang kong & sayur lodeh.

he later went to add orders of chilli eggplant, chilli tenggiri & another mutton. unfortunately i was too eagerly eating & did not take photos of the new orders.^^

mutton curry

mutton curry

chicken curry

i love all the curries, and especially the unhealthy sauces. this time i reneged on my no carbs policy. well, worthwhile carbs took over!

the chicken curry was lemak. but it was no comparison with the flavourful yellow or red curry chicken at river valley nasi padang at zion road (which is now sadly closed).

sayur lodeh

sayur lodeh

sayur lodeh was competent.

kang kong

kang kong

kang kong was ok.

for the new orders, i always like chilli eggplants, great texture & taste. & i like fish in general so the chilli tenggiri was great too.^^

chendol

chendol

chendol

we had 1 mountain dew & 4 lime juice – very small glass & lots of ice, so very dilute, not sweet (good) but almost tasteless (bad!). for me, this item was a rip-off.

after the food we ordered 4 chendol. i had 1 by myself, very sinful.

overall, the company made for a very enjoyable lunch. the food was good too & i walloped all the rice!

was kind of expensive though. my friend paid S$127 for the 5pax lunch.

Pleasant Lunch @ Ma Maison on 9Dec2014

S$12.90 tonkatsu set

S$12.90 tonkatsu set

friend bought a simple, pleasant lunch at ma maison @ central today on 9.12.2014. 🙂

he was taking good care & review of my tooth implant. after that we went for lunch at central below his clinic.

he ordered a tonkatsu set & i ordered a beef don set.

Great S$88 4pax Set Lunch @ Tunglok Signature at Central on 19Feb2014

smoked duck breast

smoked duck breast

had a great 4pax fun lunch at tunglok @ central today on 19.2.2014.

i visited the clinic of my close dental surgeon friend twice a year for regular maintenance, and we went lunch near his clinic afterwards each time with 2 other close friends. 🙂

today i ordered the S$88 6-course set lunch for 4pax. PLUS i added a xiaolongbao (小笼包), pan-fried custard buns (流沙包), and a dessert 雪中情怀=杨支甘露 + ice cream for 2 to share, as 2 other of us did not want dessert. 🙂

#1 the 2 dim sums were quite ok, competent – fupeiquin (腐皮卷) was good, siew mai 烧卖 was ok..the xiaolongbao (小笼包)i added was low in tasty soup, skin average, overall average or below, the pan-fried custard buns (流沙包) which i asked to serve with the dessert was also average. overall dim sum wise cannot compare with crystal jade or imperial treasure. 🙂

#2 smoked duck breast was par excellence, as is quite obvious from the photo (top & above) & the braised bean curd too. 🙂

#3 lie tong (例汤) was very good, the ingredients included pork soft bones & 粉角 arrowroots, an excellent soup as always. 🙂

#4 the poached heng chye with beard was good too.

#5 the prawns with egg white (赛螃蟹) i guess was ok above average dish, prawns was fresh bouncy, the style of preparation not my favourite.

雪中情怀=杨支甘露 + ice cream is my favourite here, though i didn’t take it today. the complimentary refreshment was ok welcome.

overall the set lunch (exclude ala carte orders) was S$100++=S$117 include S$8 for 4pax tea & S$4 for peanuts which could do without. quite a good set lunch deal! 🙂 including 2 more dim sum & 1 desert it was S$141, still ok.

Another Wonderful Lunch @ Tunglok Signature Orchard Parade on 30Oct2013

razor clams

razor clams S$10.50 each

a good friend bought me an excellent lunch at tunglok signature @ orchard parade on 30.10.2013. according to the service staff, they wanted to promote their set menu hence they offered palate discounts only for set menus on weekends (i had an excellent dinner set here recently on 19.10.2013),  this was a weekday, we could only do ala carte to have the discounts. 🙂

ala carte was good too. 🙂

we ordered the razor clams. this was steamed with the usual minced garlic. the sauce looked a bit darker than light soy sauce. the taste was good, and the bite was almost there though my friend felt it was still a wee bit tough. so it wasn’t perfect but still pretty good. btw, i also did a good steamed razor clam in garlic oil myself. 🙂

the lie tong as usual was super! 🙂 the 1/2 pot was enough for 4pax & we had 2 bowls each.

the star garoupa fillet with brocoli & lily bulbs were ok but missing the very evident wok hae, & the fish was not as firm & sweet as the ones i had recently at tunglok signature branch @ central.

the lobster in 2 ways – the flour gratin part was flavourful & the other was sweet & watermelon refreshing. 🙂 still, it was not quite worth S$32pax & both my friend & i would go with lobster steamed with superior sauce (上汤局) anytime. 🙂

it was a very enjoyable lunch! the cost came to S$96 for 2 after 50% palate discounts. they only charged S$1.50pax for tea. we had pu er & tea was good tea too. they should see me around more often.

a good friend organised an early birthday dinner for me at tunglok signature @ central which is next to his office on 22.10.2013. we had 4pax for the evening including my wife & a mutual friend. 🙂 my friend’s god-sister pre-ordered an ala carte menu which turned out to be very good indeed!

the wasabi prawns with light mayo topped with some mangoes were excellent, better than what we had recently at peach garden.

the best dish for the evening was the thick sea cucumbers. this was served in a very nice brown braising sauce which was served commonly with abalones or goose webs. the taste was exquisite, & i liked the jinbai (津白) as well.

next up was the star garoupa fillet with broccoli & lily bulbs. the wok hae was super – another excellently executed dish. & i liked especially the deep-fried tofu with shimeji mushrooms, very flavourful. 🙂

it was a very enjoyable dinner with the company, food & conversation. 🙂 i didn’t ask how much the dinner cost. i estimate the 6 dishes + dessert (excluding the cake to cost S$250. there was a 25% palate discount for 4pax ala carte, so probably about S$220nett.

OK but Expensive Seafood @ Rainbow Restaurant Lamma Island on 27Sep2013

油局蟹 - oil or butter baked roe crabs

油局蟹 – oil or butter baked roe crabs

was with a few friends in hong kong over the weekend 27-30.9.2013, mostly just hiking & makan & some shopping. 🙂

a friend booked rainbow restaurant at lamma island which i had also wanted to try. the restaurant offered a private ferry pick-up at central pier no. 9 & also tsimshatsui star ferry pier where we boarded (usually at the private pier no. 5 this time at no. 6). it was quite a fast boat & good fun 30mins ride sitting on the deck level feeling the night breeze & looking at the string of pearl-like lit coastlines & beautiful night skylines of central & repulse bay. 🙂

we were debating how 南丫岛 get to become Lamma Island but soon realised that 南is lam & 丫is ah in cantonese so its like lamah or Lamma Island. 🙂

we were served (and charged) a pickled jelly fish & cucumber plate, which was good. the seaweed egg littleneck clams (la la) soup was quite good though 1 friend said it was not as good as before. the steamed sea prawns was excellent, really sweet & fresh. the mantis prawns (2 large ones) in salt & pepper 椒盐濑尿虾 was good too. most friends liked this, some felt a bit salty. i was ok with it – meat was sweet stuck a little to shell. the last one i had at chung cuisine at times square was much better though, and the ones we had at Keong Kee the next day was small but also good & a lot cheaper. 🙂

the 油局蟹 (oil or butter baked roe crabs) at the top photo. we had wanted 黄油蟹 yellow roe crab famous in hk & south china. there weren’t any & the stall recommended this which was a poor substitute roe-wise, the crab meat though was very sweet & compact – i liked it but price was ex.

we had wanted the larger razor clams 蒜茸蒸garlic steamed. unusually, the seller was more insistent than us that it was better fried & we should have the venus clams garlic steamed instead, so we picked the smaller ones, feeling that it was a waste for the large clams. i quite liked this dish, though would have preferred large ones garlic steamed. it was still better than the garlic steamed razor clams at Keong Kee the next day though this was a lot more ex. so far in HK, we had not had the same excellent razor clams that we had commonly in any singapore seafood restaurants, probably because we didn’t know where to go to have them. btw, i also did a good steamed razor clam in garlic oil myself.

i not much into the garlic steamed venus clams with tanhoon 蒜茸贵妃蚌. it was quite good but never a favourite with me, should have insisted on large bamboo clams. 🙂 a friend loved the garlic fried kailan (just like me, i like all vege in hk). 🙂

the fruits, particularly the pineapples, were very sweet. a friend went over to the neighbour stall to get ginger syrup tau huay. it was very good & smooth. 🙂

the dinner came to about HK$2300 for 7pax = HK$330. i felt it was rather ex for the food we ordered in a hk seafood restaurant. another friend said he had much better at lei yue mun 鲤鱼门. anyway it was a very pleasant, relaxed & enjoyable evening, night breeze in the hair, string of pearl-like litted coastlines & beautiful night skylines, great company & food. i will definitely come back but, as with any restaurants, will need to pick the right dishes. 🙂
