Great Food & Ambience @ Kith Cafe Park Mall on 30Jun2015

crabmeat linguine in tomato sauce

crabmeat linguine in tomato sauce

a RI friend is a proprietor of kith cafe at park mall & sentosa cove (kith has another outlet at robertson quay). kith does all day breakfast (till 5pm) and seems like a good coffee place too.

after our may G20 dinner at peach garden @ metropolis on 26.5.2015, we all agreed we should be young again & be spotted at kith. so this friend volunteered or was volunteered to organise the june dinner at kith cafe @ park mall on 30.6.2015. 🙂

we had 15pax. 🙂

i didn’t know if kith meant anything in particular, but after googling i found out that kith was like kin or kindred or –

acquaintances, friends, neighbors, or the like; persons living in thesame general locality and forming a more or less cohesive group

a cafe for friends – good name!

a few friends went early & took a short walk at fort canning park. the rest of us got a tour of our friend’s high end office chairs & system furniture shop adjacent to kith cafe.

watermelon & lychee smoothie

watermelon & lychee smoothie

the friend ordered watermelon & lychee smoothie for a few of us. it was good, refreshing, quenching, not too sweet. not particularly a favourite for me though.

some ordered ABC – apple, beetroot & carrots me think…sounds healthy. i will try that one next time.

sweet corn soup

sweet corn soup

couple friends ordered a soup. think it was the soup of the day, maybe a sweet corn soup. looked ok.

calamari

calamari

my friend ordered some calamari & 2 pizza to share, and each ordered our own pasta dish.

calamari was good. squid was very slightly tough, batter was good.

calamari

calamari

this a common dish in many restaurants, and it’s quite competent here. 🙂

gong bao pizza

gong bao chicken pizza

the gong bao chicken pizza was better than i expected. we all liked the thin crust pizza.

gong bao pizza

gong bao chicken pizza

gong bao chicken may have sounded cheesy & chinatown like but it was actually good – no sticky sauce, taste was not too sweet & combined quite well with the pizza. 🙂

parma ham pizza

parma ham pizza

parma ham pizza was competent also. pretty ok. 🙂

parma ham pizza

parma ham pizza

pizza not particularly my favourite but it is an excellent dish for communal dining & i do enjoy a slice of good pizza (i shared 1/2 gong bao chicken & 1/2 parma ham pizza with a friend) to start the dinner.

spaghetti alio olio

spaghetti alio olio

the spaghetti alio olio was good!

good helping, very flavourful, good garlic flavours & lots of shiitake mushrooms. I shared 1/2 of it with a friend who shared 1/2 of my squid ink pasta. not a usual dish i would order as i like meat or seafood. 🙂

linguine gamberini (garlic prawn)

linguine gamberini (garlic prawn)

the linguine gamberini (garlic prawn) looked good. i will order that next time.

carbonara

carbonara

carbonara. looked ok. somehow looked a bit like hokkien mee. egg was mixed in the pasta. i think it would taste good as most pasta here were good. though i am more used to the look/colour of carbonara at alfresco gusto.

bolognese

bolognese

i had a try of the bolognese, and the tomato sauce was good. meat sauce/ragout preparation not my favourite but this was good.

vongole

vongole

did not try the vongole. it looked fine. 🙂

vongole

vongole

they said vongole is a test of a pasta chef. the lala (littleneck clams) have a distinctive shellfish taste & if the linguine is done al dente the combination is quite excellent. my own vongole linguine here.

veal spinach tortellini in tomato sauce

veal spinach tortellini in tomato sauce

the veal spinach tortellini looked interesting.

veal spinach tortellini in tomato sauce

veal spinach tortellini in tomato sauce

& looked yummy! i must try that next time. 🙂

squid ink spaghetti with seafood alio olio

squid ink spaghetti with seafood alio olio

my friend the proprietor ordered the day’s special, a squid ink spaghetti with seafood alio olio.

i tasted. it was good.

squid ink pasta

squid ink pasta

i liked my own squid ink sauce pasta better though. it was more intense & flavourful, though my immediate reaction was it was a bit salty. my own squid ink seafood spaghetti here.

the friend who shared 1/2 my squid ink thought it was very salty, and that the alio olio was also salty. i was good with the alio olio, & salt does bring out the flavours (though too much would kill it).

my friend the proprietor ordered 2 more pizza – a duck & mushroom ragout & a special – with sausage.

my phone died so i did not have photos. duck ragout was good & had some meat pieces. i liked the sausage special pizza a bit more, sausage very flavourful.

yuzu cheese cake

yuzu cheese cake

the pastry chef among us went to select the dessert.

i didn’t think much of the yuzu cheese cake nor the biscuit base. probably i was programmed to think anything yuzu must be specially good. this was average so-so to me.

tiramisu

tiramisu

didn’t think much of the tiramisu either. i had a small teaspoon scoop near the top, somehow thought it felt like penna cotta.

tiramisu

tiramisu

that did not prepare me for interrogation by our pastry chef. she asked if i tasted the lady finger biscuits. seemed that i didn’t (i guess that’s why i thought it tasted like penna cotta – soft, light w/o the tiramisu texture) nor did i tasted coffee or liquor.

our pastry chef thought it was good, and she said there was liquor at the bottom & she didn’t take coffee anyway, so that suited her. guess i have to defer to pastry chef!^^

anyway my palate a bit hesitant, not very sharp like my daughter…give me excuse to try a few more times.^^

lemongrass chocolate cake

lemongrass chocolate cake

the lemongrass chocolate cake looked really pretty, but it’s not my thing.

lemongrass chocolate cake

lemongrass chocolate cake

my least preferred of the 3 dessert.

i had a flat white afterwards. it was good. but didn’t feel that it was in the chye seng huat, dutch colony, or the assembly coffee category.

it was really enjoyable evening. company was super fun, outdoor ambience was cool & nice open space, & food was great. i will probably come back with my family. 🙂

Great Teochew Muay @ Shi Le Yuan 实叻圆糜 on 29Jun2015

ngor soon fish-baby treadfin

ngor soon fish-baby treadfin

a RI friend organised a teochew muay this morning at shi le yuan 实叻圆糜 on 29.6.2015.^^

we had lunch & long chat 2 weeks ago at happy duck at bukit merah view food centre, and arranged to come for this teochew muay.

shi le yuan 实叻圆糜

shi le yuan 实叻圆糜

lunch started early for patrons of this market stall.

constant queue from 10am

constant queue from 10am

a queue started at 10am. my friend was already there in the queue. we arranged to meet 10.15am. i arrived just a bit later.

ngor soon fish-baby treadfin

ngor soon fish-baby treadfin

our expert teochew ah hia earlier spoke with the stall proprietor & we had the ngor soon fish-baby treadfin. this was really good. sweet, tender, tasty, especially with the tau jeoh.^^

spicy black bean minced pork

spicy black bean minced pork

earlier the teochew ah hia & i were wondering about the stall. we were thinking maybe the food is ok & the price is cheap. that would be enough reasons for a constant queue. basically i don’t think too much of teochew muay in singapore myself. i just feel that its really expensive (like >S$10pax) for very cheap ingredients & ordinary cooking.

overall, this stall is certainly very cheap. we only paid S$43 for 7pax & so many dishes. we had repeat helpings for 3 dishes – the spicy black bean minced pork, salted fish minced pork (kiam her bak) & black bean pork ribs. so its easy to tell, in addition to the ngor soon fish-baby treadfin, these were among the best dishes.

the other dishes were not like supergood but they were generally also competent. 🙂

spicy black bean minced pork was good. i may try this myself.

salted fish minced pork (kiam her bak)

salted fish minced pork (kiam her bak)

salted fish minced pork (kiam her bak) was very good. texture was slightly firmer & different from my own salted fish minced pork dish. maybe it had a bit more flour. it had less salted fish. that’s good. minced pork & salted fish should not be competing.

black bean pork ribs

black bean pork ribs

black bean sauce minced pork was good. it was not out of the ordinary but was quite good really.

kor leh - cabbage

kor leh – cabbage

the other dishes were all quite ok. kor leh – cabbage was like any other.

chim char lor

chim char lor

chim char lor nothing standing out, but it was not very salty so that’s good.

deep-fried bean curd with leek

fried bean curd with leek

fried bean curd with leek, a favourite of mine, not particularly tasty but ok. i think my sis in law did a better one for chinese new year.

fried egg

fried egg

fried egg felt a bit like my tamago (japanese egg roll) w/o rolling up. there might be a bit of sugar, which is what i do with my tamago.

salted egg

salted egg

salted egg, not the very reddish oozing with oil kind. i guess it will do.

bean curd

braised bean curd

bean curd – this was non-descript & the second poorest item among the mostly nice dishes.

somehow i did not take a photo of only 1 dish = the teochew fishcake, and that was the poorest dish, felt like a lot of starch, totally not the texture & sweetness of a teochew fishcake. strange!

mixed mushrooms

mixed mushrooms

the mixed mushrooms i think was complimentary from the proprietor to us for ordering too much. haha!^^

very good teochew muay S$43 for 7pax

very good teochew muay S$43 for 7pax

well, this teochew muay totally suit my palate, very competent food with quite a few standout dishes & very good price.

i will be back soon enough.

Enjoyed the Food This Time @ Tian Bao Restaurant (天寶閣) on 28Jun2015

saliva chicken口水鸡

saliva chicken口水鸡

had dinner at tian bao restaurant (天寶閣) at taka with wife & daughter on 18.4.2015 but wasn’t impressed.

i had one S$50 groupon voucher left expiring on 30.6.2015, so not much choice than to go with sis for dinner on 28.6.2015.

tian bao restaurant (天寶閣)

tian bao restaurant (天寶閣)

the placed had 2 seatings 5.30pm & 7.30pm. it was quite packed and this was a monday. everyone was using the vouchers. i wonder how traffic be like if no vouchers, but groupon vouchers tend to keep reappearing anyway.

saliva chicken口水鸡

saliva chicken口水鸡 – S$8.80

we ordered the saliva chicken口水鸡 – S$8.80. it was pretty good actually.

i would say crystal jade lamian xiaolongbao version had a lot more kick.

saliva chicken口水鸡

saliva chicken口水鸡

this one was a large helping. chicken was good, chilli was mild but still quite flavourful especially taking a little together with the chicken. maybe my own saliva chicken口水鸡 standard.

soup dumplings 海味抄手

soup dumplings海味抄手

i had soup dumplings海味抄手the last time & it was good, so i ordered it again.^^

never knew there was a different version than spicy dumplings 红油抄手, which was the usual we had at crystal jade lamian xiaolongbao.

soup dumplings 海味抄手2

soup dumplings海味抄手

there were 6 dumplings. dumplings skin was smooth & meat filling was good.

soup dumplings 海味抄手4 soup dumplings 海味抄手3

soup lagi best!

this soup dumplings海味抄手, i think S$9.80 was very worth ordering.

deepfried tofu with pork

deepfried tofu with pork

we were deciding between braised beef & bamboo shoot & this dish. server said this dish was more popular. but it was a very average dish at S$13.80.

deepfried tofu with pork

deepfried tofu with pork

can’t really say the dish was not good. it was quite average if competent, nothing much to say about the tofu. & in comparison would be the worst dish we ordered.

dan dan noodles 担担面

dan dan noodles 担担面

dan dan noodles 担担面 S$9.80 was very good!

dan dan noodles 担担面

dan dan noodles 担担面

again the spiciness seemed to have been moderated, but it was still tasty & flavourful. i liked it!

ice jelly with cheng chao

ice jelly with cheng chao

the ice jelly was also something i had last time.

ice jelly with cheng chao

ice jelly with cheng chao

i did not actually remember it, but somehow i seemed to have gravitated to ordering the same item.

ice jelly with cheng chao

ice jelly with cheng chao

it was refreshing. a small dish at S$3.80, i guess not cheap or expensive in particular. 🙂

i find the pricing generally far more expensive than a good restaurant like crystal jade e.g. 小笼包 S$9.80 (i.e. w/o the groupon discounts). guess problem with such a place is always what dishes one orders. this time we ordered mostly good dishes we liked, except that we still had a lemon (the deep-fried tofu dish).

the dinner for 2pax came to S$30.80 using my groupon vouchers (S$25 for S$50 voucher value). at this price i would say the food was pretty good!^^

Excellent Italian Food @ Follia on 20Jun2015

osobucco alla milanese

osso bucco alla milanese

daughter arranged a father’s day dinner at follia on 20.6.2015.^^

this the 3rd father’s day. wife arranged a 2pax father’s day lunch at kuriya dining earlier, and then a family father’s day dinner at valentino, as wife & youngest daughter were away during father’s day.

pane pizza all' aglio

pane pizza all’ aglio – just S$4.80

we started with pane pizza all’ aglio, just S$4.80.

pane pizza all' aglio

pane pizza all’ aglio

it was good as any pizza minus the toppings. 🙂

bisque di aragosta

bisque di aragosta

the lobster bisque was good, flavourful, and came with mussels, clams, prawn & flower crab. most important the bisque tasted great! 🙂

bisque di aragosta

bisque di aragosta

flower crab had no meat, the ingredients looked good, but not really important. i was curious that 2 reviewers – one said dislike the mussels the other said they had a bad taste. the mussels were ok for me though.

crayfish squid ink risotto

S$35 crayfish squid ink risotto

the special crayfish squid ink risotto was very good. really like the flavours of the risotto with good shellfish stock, smooth & creamy. the proprietor told us later though it was butter & no cream. it was especially good with the tomato sauce for the crayfish mixed into the risotto.

crayfish squid ink risotto

crayfish squid ink risotto

there were 2 halves crayfish & 2 large prawns. 🙂

crayfish squid ink risotto

crayfish squid ink risotto

S$35 not really overly expensive for the dish. however i don’t really need to pay for crayfish. i can do my own very well bought from chinatown, at times just S$12/kg. the squidink pasta dish on their menu is good enough for me.^^

linguine frutti di mare

linguine frutti di mare

i liked the frutti di mare a lot too. it was really an excellent flavoured tomato sauce.

linguine frutti di mare

linguine frutti di mare

the ingredients were also very good.

linguine frutti di mare

linguine frutti di mare

i will definitely take this again.

follia 4 clover way

follia 4 clover way

we arrived at 7pm & the place was empty. but by 8pm, it was full left 1 table. a simple but pleasant place & a very friendly proprietor who took photos with us later.

osobucco alla milanese

osso bucco alla milanese

i ordered the osso bucco alla milanese as it was the only dish featured on their homepage.

& i was not disappointed. it was the same saffron osso bucco dish i had at a riverside restaurant along milan’s navigli district, just as good! 🙂

the osso bucco was very well done, fork tender, tasty & not sinewy. braised meats are never my favourites though, nothing to do with the dish itself. & the saffron risotto was excellent, and very nice garlic toast too.

i do very good pastas (like squid-ink spaghetti and lobster angel hair pasta) & also an excellent seafood risotto myself, but the pastas & risottos here were really good i will come back for more.

Catching Up Over Relaxing Lunch @ Keng Eng Kee (KEK) on 17Jun2015

sliced fish with bitter gourd in black bean sauce

S$12 sliced fish with bitter gourd in black bean sauce

meet up with an old RI friend for lunch at keng eng kee (KEK) today 12pm on 17.6.2015.^^

came for dinner 1 year ago with my sis & b-i-l.

i was there 15mins early. parking was better than expected. 🙂

i asked whether we could sit at the aircon place. lady gave me a card to call next time. my friend joined & said he tried to call but it was too late to make a booking. anyway the table at the coffeeshop area had fans & quite well ventilated. it was quite ok on this day.

sliced fish with bitter gourd in black bean sauce

S$12 sliced fish with bitter gourd in black bean sauce

we ordered the bitter gourd in black bean sauce dish. actually we ordered the one with beef (as we also ordered sliced fish thick beehoon soup) but it came with sliced fish. anyway we were ok with it.

it was done well, a good zi char dish, no difference from the rest. i had it at kok sen in kiong saik street before & basically about the same. i had it also at 香港街珍记 – hong kong street chun kee at commonwealth crescent. equally good. 🙂

spinach with ikan bilis

S$8 spinach with ikan bilis

we were contemplating either the spinach with ikan bilis or the “jew her eng chye” aka cuttlefish kang kong. both were shown on their picture menu.

spinach with ikan bilis

S$8 spinach with ikan bilis

friend decided on the ikan bilis.

spinach with ikan bilis

S$8 spinach with ikan bilis

it was very good. ikan bilis gave it a very good texture combination. the vege was done well & tasty.

sliced fish thick beehoon soup

S$5 sliced fish thick beehoon soup

for the carb dish we shared a S$5 sliced fish in thick beehoon.

sliced fish thick beehoon soup

S$5 sliced fish thick beehoon soup

this was quite perfect. a light carb, doubled as a tasty soup & with healthy sliced fish. ^^

prices had gone up a bit, as old prices were blanco & written over. lunch was S$25.40 including 2x$0.20 for wet tissue. quite ok lah! 🙂

this friend only joined RI in pre-U & was in the band so close to some of my band friends. good to spend time rediscovering old friendship.

we walked over to alexandra village for ice kachang & jackfruit jelly after lunch. 🙂

Nice Lunch & Chat with Old Friends @ Happy Duck Bukit Merah View FC on 16Jun2015

pigs ear, intestines, pig skin & lor bak S$10

pigs ear, intestines, pig skin & kong bak S$10

went out lunch with some good friends today on 16.6.2015.

we had wanted to take my favourite chai chuan tou chinese mutton soup 柴船头羊肉汤 at bukit merah view market & food centre. however the stall was closed & seemed that only reopen on 1.8.2015. that’s a long time to close shop!

3 of us were already parked at 11am. we were discussing where to go instead. one that came to mind was the havelock turtle soup合落山瑞, kueh chap or red garoupa fish soup at havelock road food centre.

but then there was already a pretty ok duck & kueh chap stall here = happy duck. 🙂 the other 2 friends were on their way & it was troublesome to drive & to park as well.

1/2 braised duck S$18

1/2 braised duck S$18

so we settled on happy duck!^^

price was reasonable. we had 1/2 braised duck for S$18.

also added the kueh chap including 4 items = pigs ear, intestines, pig skin & kong bak for S$10.

the duck was pretty good for me. duck was tender, good flavour & chilli was great too.

1 friend thought it was average, quite fine. another thought the one next to hoover rojak at whampoa market, liang zhao ji duck rice, was better – that’s my memory too, but i had not eaten at that duck stall for umpteen years. i know what i don’t like though – the one previously at south buona vista with the gluey sauce, lim seng lee boneless duck. taste is personal, haha! 🙂

my own favourite braised duck is at imperial treasure teochew, & it’s not expensive either just S$28 for 1/2 duck (of course that’s a bit more than S$18 here).

another friend’s favourite was 店小二’s roast duck but that is another story. unfortunately we seemed to run out of places to find goose, braised or roast.

kueh chap

kueh chap

sauce rice

sauce rice

we had 2 rice & 2 kueh. that added another S$2, my kueh was ok, average. the rice did not seem to be yam rice, maybe just sauce. another it was just S$2 for 4.

so it was S$30, and it was quite enough for 5pax (1 friend came slightly late & added his own kueh). 🙂

after makan, we had fruits & then coffeshop coffee. i had my usual kopi-c gosong tilok. very shiok.

1 left a bit earlier, 4 of us stayed & chatted for the longest time. haha!

Still Good BUT Far Too Pricey @ Valentino on 11Jun2015

crab squid-ink linguine in pink sauce

crab squid-ink linguine in pink sauce

daughter organised an early father’s day dinner at valentino on 11.6.2015. ^^ youngest daughter leaving for london tomorrow & wife joining her later on 19.6.2015.

i asked to dine at Valentino as i had not been to valentino for many years. my impression had been that food is good here, but just too pricey & not justifying the quality of food. this evening was no exception, nothing to change my mind.

focaccia

focaccia

we had a complimentary focaccia. it was warm, & good! 🙂

amarone

amarone

we had a bottle of amarone. we were told S$145, but when the bill came it was S$168. we assumed it was a misunderstanding, and the server actually served a different bottle of amarone for some reason maybe assuming that we wanted a better bottle though we did not have a clue ourselves? anyway it was father’s day dinner & wine was good (a non drinker like me also heard of the name amarone before…hahaha!). we just paid up.

burrata S$45 - liked this & the veal best!

burrata S$45 – liked this & the veal best!

i remembered the burrata was a very good dish here. & it was! ^^

very light & went well with the palate. i thought there was prosciutto accompanying the dish, but there wasn’t. i must have confused with another place. i thought parma ham would complement well the burrata & bring out the flavours more.

burrata S$45 - liked this & the veal best!

burrata S$45 – liked this & the veal best!

later i found on my earlier post that senso indeed served it with parma ham, however my memory had been that valentino’s was still better!

beef carpaccio

beef carpaccio

we added a beef carpaccio. it was good too. sweet, tasty cut.

beef carpaccio

beef carpaccio

& just great with the parmesan cheese & rockets.

crab squid-ink linguine in pink sauce

crab squid-ink linguine in pink sauce

& i always love the crab squid-ink linguine in pink sauce.

crab squid-ink linguine in pink sauce

crab squid-ink linguine in pink sauce

it was still very good, and i guess i still liked it. it was very creamy, a lot of crab meat, and linguine was done well, al dente! 🙂

but for me it has lost a bit, or maybe most of the wow factor. i do a pretty good creamy tomato myself, and my wife’s crayfish pasta in pink sauce is just plain awesome, just lightly cream with nice tomato taste, where this was like all cream. i would prefer that to this 10x over.

my daughter, who is rather discerning with food & has a better palate than i, though liked this quite a lot. goes to show taste is a very individual preference. 🙂

that it was a very good pasta & the price was quite ok is not disputed.

carbonara

carbonara

the carbonara – my first taste was that it was good. but then immediately, i agreed with my youngest daugher that it did not taste like the usual carbonara.

carbonara

carbonara

yes, valentino’s was a good pasta, the dry creamy kind & tasty maybe from the cheese. but i think i like the alfresco gusto version of carbonara with an egg much better.

parma ham porcini cheese pizza - good

parma ham porcini cheese pizza – good

i liked the parma ham porcini cheese pizza – good!

parma ham porcini cheese pizza - good

parma ham porcini cheese pizza – good

nothing so special but just a good pizza.

pan fried veal - loved this & ordered a second

pan fried veal – loved this & ordered a second

what was a very pleasant surprise was the pan-fried veal with parma ham, about S$37. it w2as the best dish of the evening, and we ordered a second.^^

pistachio panna cotta - bad!

pistachio panna cotta – bad!

for me, the pistachio penna cotta was a complete flop. we all said it tasted like a poor chinese almond jelly. & it cost S$15.50. i was not expecting lake como’s pizzeria balognett standard, but this was just plain poor dessert.

overall we paid like S$528nett for 5pax. the wine alone cost like S$195, so about S$325nett for the food for 5pax. it was not cheap but i guess that was not overly pricey either. however that i feel was because we asked the price of every dish that was the special not on the menu. the only thing that ws less clear was the wine, which we were told S$145 but served a different wine S$168? anyway that was ok.

the prices of specials though like S$258 for 1kg T-bone steak & S$168 bisteca florentine steak were just not on for me leh! ….al borgo used to serve the florentine steak at S$60, maybe it is S$80 now??

there was no lobster pasta this evening & the special was king prawns at S$58. i guess i woud order it if i have faith in the restaurant where transparent pricing & mathcing the food is concerned. well, i didn’t. i guess i will call it just my personal lack of faith.

Wonderful Evening, Good Friend, Sumptuous Dinner @ ME.OUE on 9Jun2015

scallop carpaccio with veloute

scallop carpaccio with veloute

had a wonderful dinner with a close friend at me@oue on 9.6.2015. ^^

this dinner was postponed for more than a month from before his birthday & my cornwall trip 7-18.5.2015.

view of MBS from me@oue

view of MBS – marina bay sands from me@oue

we were booked for 6.30pm, so great views of MBS & marina bay before nightfall.

we had a great table right by the window. anyway, you can just walk outside to the terrace, and marina bay front opens up before you!^^

me @ oue

me @ oue

a shot of the inside.

squid ink brioche2 squid ink brioche

we started with warm squid ink brioche. i had mine broken into bite size pieces before i remembered & assembled them for the photo. haha! 🙂

table decor - flower

table decor – flower

there was a soothing table decor.

scallop carpaccio with veloute

scallop carpaccio with veloute

we decided to order japanese ohmi wagyu A4 striploin to share & a red lobster each. so was picking an appetiser to share.

scallop carpaccio with veloute

scallop carpaccio with veloute

i already had the tuna tartare the last time here. we settled on a scallop carpaccio served on some veloute topped with caviar.

scallop carpaccio with veloute

scallop carpaccio with veloute

must say the scallop carpaccio was top grade sashimi, very sweet & tasty. there were 5 slices. the veloute was good too.

red lobster - done chilli crab style

red lobster – done chilli crab style

the red lobster, which was done chilli crab style arrived, together with deep-fried man tou.

red lobster - done chilli crab style

red lobster – done chilli crab style

surprised, i pointed out to the server that the last time i had the red lobster here, it was a full lobster & not 1/2 lobster.

he replied that indeed it was a full lobster & he had it split for us so that each of use was served a 1/2 lobster on individual plate instead of sharing it with 1 man tou.

so the server misunderstood our order, quite understandably. we were very pleased with the excellent service.

ohmi A4 wagyu striploin

ohmi A4 wagyu striploin

likewise he split for us the ohmi A4 wagyu striploin, done the recommended medium rare. ^^

ohmi A4 wagyu striploin

ohmi A4 wagyu striploin

wagyu was 200g, so after split, it was still a sizeable portion, served separately with sides (jalapeño chilli, leek, king oyster mushroom, cherry tomato) & 4 dip sauces. excellent food, superb service! 🙂

ohmi A4 wagyu striploin

ohmi A4 wagyu striploin

ohmi is among the top 3 japanese wagyu, the other 2 being matsuzaka & kobe.

it was very nicely marbled & flavourful, excellent grilling & medium rare. most enjoyable!

lobster risotto

lobster risotto

we wondered about ordering a second red lobster as initially intended.

lobster was nice, still chilli crab style was not my favourite & it was a large lobster (maybe 650g), so 1/2 was a big enough portion & the “mistake” suited us well, probably wouldn’t want a second order.

lobster risotto

lobster risotto

we picked through the menu with the very helpful & professional server, and decided on the lobster risotto.

lobster risotto

lobster risotto

the risotto was excellently al dente, though al dente risotto is not my friend’s favourite. the crustacean stock was very tasty & intense but a tad too salty.

for myself, i prefer the crustacean stock to be tempered with vegetable stock to give much more balanced sweet flavours. 🙂

lobster was plentiful. i believe they did use a full lobster & split into 1/2 & served individually to us.

MBS - Marina Bay Sands

MBS – Marina Bay Sands

beautiful photo of MBS – marina bay sands.

my friend has expensive camera & takes great photos. he was quite busy getting out to the terrace to capture the magic hour.

marina bay

marina bay

another beautiful shot of marina bayfront. 🙂

we had a great time watching the laser display & music by MBS & the great views from the terrace.

dinner was S$195 after 50% amex palate discounts for 2, for such an excellent meal with 2 lobsters, ohmi wagyu & scallops carpaccio in wonderful company. be back for more!^^

wife bought me an excellent chirashi sushi zen set at lunch at kuriya dining on 9.6.2015.^^

it was for early father’s day.

we had a mother’s day lunch at gurnard’s head on 10.5.2015 and a mother’s day dinner at mackerel sky at newlyn, cornwall.

salad with goma dressing

set started with a salad with goma (sesame) dressing.

there was a lot of salad, a bit little dressing. we asked for more. of course to be added in moderation. it was good. 🙂

snow crab chawanmushi

snow crab chawanmushi

the chawanmushi was excellent, especially with the very tasty snow crab sauce, though i felt the sauce was a bit starchy.

chirashi sushi zen

this was an excellent chirashi don for S$62++.

chirashi sushi zen

i still cannot decide if this is better or mikuni’s better. i guess overall i still favour mikuni’s chirashi don but this was really really good too.

anyway, i like them both.

uni, negi toro, maguro, hamachi, amaebi

uni, negi toro, salmon, tai, maguro, hotate, hamachi, amaebi

you have in one bamboo holder uni, negi toro, salmon, tai, maguro, hotate, hamachi, amaebi on a bed of cubed salmon & maguro (like in barachisrashi don).

on the other there was anago, ikura, tobiko, tamago on sushi rice.

it’s actually kind of huge set for lunch, but on some days we are permitted to spoil ourselves.

Shing Kee Noodles, Lek Yuen Estate, Shatin & Congee Lunch at Tak Hin德兴粥面on 6Jun2015

Shing Kee Noodles Shop 5, Lek Yuen Estate Market, Sha Tin

Shing Kee Noodles Shop 5, Lek Yuen Estate Market, Sha Tin

we were checkin out at 1pm on 6.6.2015. that was the latest royal park hotel allowed. after that it was HK$110/hr. we planned to take A41 to airport round about 5pm so had some time to kill. i had earlier checked out shing kee noodles on internet. it sounded like an interesting place & had like 100% good reviews. it is quite a go to place for hotpot dinners in the evening but for lunch there are noodles & also set lunches with fish & minced pork dishes.

way to Shing Kee Noodles

way to Shing Kee Noodles

we had dimsum at taoheung pier 88 稻香超級漁港 in mong kok earlier so was not particularly hungry. still, not sure how far was shing kee noodles so might as well start walking. good thing about hong kong is that many buildings are connected by covered walkways. good when raining of course but even for the very hot sun. ^^ just like my adventure thrill (trail) to富记大排档 tai wai, i followed the google map. we walked over the overhead bridge linkway to lek yuen estate.

way to Shing Kee Noodles

way to Shing Kee Noodles

parknshop superstore was at the right of the entrance to the overhead bridge.

looking down from the covered walkway, i saw a block. we later walked further & asked around before finding the restaurant shing kee noodles at the basement of the block. 🙂

Shing Kee Noodles Shop 5, Lek Yuen Estate Market, Sha Tin

the place was quite chic really, like a cool cafe place in singapore like carpenters & cook, or like aeiou.

Shing Kee Noodles Shop 5, Lek Yuen Estate Market, Sha Tin

Shing Kee Noodles Shop 5, Lek Yuen Estate Market, Sha Tin

haha, it’s a mental switch, can’t really associate it with a beef brisket or hotpot restaurant. 🙂

Shing Kee Noodles Shop 5, Lek Yuen Estate Market, Sha Tin

Shing Kee Noodles Shop 5, Lek Yuen Estate Market, Sha Tin

unfortunately for us, there were 4 rice sets with different fish including a veg & soup for HK$37, but all were sold out (it was about 2pm). we were not planning to have beef brisket noodles & the other rice sets were all steamed minced pork蒸肉饼 so we decided to bail out.

tuk hing porridge & noodles

tak hing congee & noodles

we returned to tak hing 德兴粥面店, which we past on the way to shing kee noodles.

chicken innards porride 鸡杂粥

chicken innards congee 鸡杂粥

the braises including braised goose were only served in the evening from 5pm.

chicken innards porride 鸡杂粥

chicken innards congee 鸡杂粥

we had to settle for the congee. i had the chicken innards congee 鸡杂粥. it was so good! congee was very sweet & great. & the chicken innards were great too.

sis had a 艇仔粥. did not take photo, but it was very good too. & both were HK$24!^^

dried oysters HK$168:斤 (600g)= S$50:kg

we walked round 一田 yata supermart. there was a promo – dried oysters HK$168:斤 (600g)= S$50/kg. the promo price was same as those i saw at the provision shop on the way to shing kee noodle.

turbot HK$118 at supermarket

turbot HK$118 at supermarket

also saw a raw turbot for HK$118 at supermarket. we had a steamed turbot last evening from 富记大排档tai wai for just HK$98! ^^ this hong kong trip was immensely enjoyable & successful as we got to see cheung chau island (including the very beautiful shorelines from the mini great wall) and lamma island, and the 10,000 buddha monastery.we had 4 dimsum lunches, and lots of exciting daipaidong food at newfound places. & it didn’t rain. about the only negative point was the scorching sun.

Worst Meal in Hong Kong @ Chao Inn, Terminal 2, HK International Airport on 6Jnn2015

teochew chilled mullet冻乌鱼

teochew chilled mullet冻乌鱼

had the worst meal in entire hong long trip 2-6jun2015 at chao inn 潮楼 at the airport on 6.6.2015.

our jetstar flight was 8.25pm. we received message earlier that flight was delayed 1hr. anyway we already planned to take A41 around 5pm & arrive airport about 6pm.

(fortunately for us check-in counter opened at 6.15pm & i did the internet check-in & managed to check in at the web check pin counter with zero queue while the normal check-in counters already had >10pax queues. & similar queue at the web check-in also after i had checked in)

airport chao inn 潮楼

airport chao inn 潮楼

since we were early & we had a really great dinner at chao inn 潮楼 @ kwun tong, we decided to give it a try here. alas, wrong decision! this chao inn NOT that chao inn 此潮楼非那潮楼!

teochew chilled mullet冻乌鱼

teochew chilled mullet冻乌鱼

fortunately the teochew chilled mullet冻乌鱼 was still ok! at HK$98 though it was more expensive than eating at lao ah tee 老阿弟 at whampoa boon keng etc.

teochew chilled mullet冻乌鱼

teochew chilled mullet冻乌鱼

this mullet was still sweet just slightly fishy, more or less singapore standard unlike chao inn @ kwun tong which was basically perfect.

not to mention what we had at kwun tong was just HK$48, of course that was 40% discount after 9pm, this was airport.

the braised goose though was hopeless, like reboiled or overnight & microwaved.

basically, moral of story is don’t eat at airport if possible, and don’t order items where turnover maybe low & likely to be kept overnight & not fresh.

Hit, Misses & Downright Horrendous Service @ Taoheung Super 88 稻香超級漁港 on 6Jun2015

har gao & teochew dumpling combo

har gao & teochew dumpling combo

our last day in hong kong, returning singapore in the evening 8.25pm flight (later delayed by 1 hr) & checking out royal park hotel at 1pm.

went to mongkok for dimsum breakfast on 6.6.2015. took a while to locate taoheung super 88 稻香超級漁港 as the signboard display outside the building had been removed.

taoheung super 88 稻香超級漁港

taoheung super 88 稻香超級漁港

anyhow we were seated before 9am. place was crowded.

our order & the mixed up

our order & the mixed up

we were assigned a 4pax table 135A, apparently with another 2persons. but 135A already had 2 persons seated. so the other 2 were assigned table 136. but the card (eft of photo) was not amended. and our orders & the other 2 guys were all entered as 135A (right of photo).

because of the mixed up some orders came to us on 135A. not a big deal really. they were soon sorted out, & they brought us a order chip showing difference in order timing & demarcating which were our orders & which table 136.

har gao & teochew dumpling combo

har gao & teochew dumpling combo

we did not quite notice, but our order of har gao was actually an order of a har gao & teochew dumpling combo. we were quite happy with it.

har gao & teochew dumpling combo

har gao & teochew dumpling combo

teochew dumpling 潮州粉果 was better. har gao was ok but below the standard of timhowan fuk wing street shamshuipo (everything was below timhowan anyway) & any of the good dimsum place in singapore like crystal jade, imperial treasure, canton paradise.

char siew fun cheong (bad)

char siew fun cheong (bad)

cahr siew fun cheong was bad!

char siew fun cheong (bad)

char siew fun cheong (bad)

after the even more horrendous beef fun cheong at 旺角小肥羊 LittleSheep at agile street, it became painfully obvious to me that you don’t take fun cheong in hong kong unless you are at timhowan or some better name chains. steamed pork ribs, chicken feet & rice generally ok, though even the rice don’t take it here!

spicy trotters

spicy trotters

the spicy trotters were ok.

spicy trotters

spicy trotters

nothing special to talk about, just ok.

chicken mushroom rice (the poorest so far)

chicken mushroom rice (the poorest so far)

this chicken mushroom rice was the poorest so far. looked pathetic.

timhowan’s was great. but the claypot version at 旺角小肥羊 LittleSheep at agile street. the rice was fragrant & flavourful.

chicken mushroom rice (the poorest so far)

chicken mushroom rice (the poorest so far)

here we basically rescued the rice with earlier orders of steamed pork ribs & chicken feet.

we also had the worst horrendous service in hong kong here. table & order mixed up ok la..but there was this server, 40s or maybe early 50s, who was downright rude & belligerent. first she glared at me when i passed her the order chit earlier waiting for her to read out & confirm the order, and she said like “lor chow lor lo” meaning “give me order chit just give la, why look at me”. i told her i also want to order steamed pork ribs & chicken feet. she said “you mai wad lor” in an extremely rude way meaning “if you want just mark it”.  i told her i could not find it. she pointed out to me.

then the server again forgot the rice order by an old couple which were at my table before we arrived, when we already had the rice. some other server came & gave them a different rice. they told the server it was wrong but they would take it as they did not want to wait. the rude server came later & gave the old couple another rice. they said they already had the different one before their order was forgotten & they told the other server but agreed to take the wrong rice. rude server literally argued with them why they took the wrong one. the old couple asked “so it is our fault you forgot & then gave us the wrong rice?”. here i was not going to let her off but told her yes exactly you guys forgot the wrong order & gave the wrong rice.

after the rude server left i told the old couple we all come here to enjoy & are not going to waste time with these people & not going to let them affect our good time, just what needs to be said has to be said.

& this part is going into the food reviews so the management can read about it should they do. haha!

steamed pork ribs

steamed pork ribs

luckily pork ribs was great.

steamed pork ribs

steamed pork ribs

we emptied the entire plate with sauce onto the rice. ^^

steamed chicken feet

steamed chicken feet

chicken feet was fine too.

steamed chicken feet

steamed chicken feet

just a tad salty.

so lesson learned in HK dimsum is steamed pork ribs & chicken feet almost can get anywhere about same standard, in any case quite ok. fun cheong on the other hand better take only from timhowan or other more well know places. haha! just kidding la..as the title goes, hits & misses.

dimsum was HK$116, so basically quite same prices, all the 4 dimsum we had. likewise all the dinners or bigger meals we had about HK$220.

Daipaidong Dinner Thrill @ 富记大排档 Tai Wai on 5Jun2015

eggplant with minced pork (1 look) HK$68

eggplant with minced pork (1 look) HK$68

after a hot climb to see the 10,000 buddha monastery in 32degC though we were more sheltered from the scorching sun than the past 2 days, i had a sudden lost of motivation, a running out of steam.

so after lunch at LittleSheep mongkok 小肥羊旺角, we decided to ga back to royal park hotel at shatin to “recharge”. 🙂

i googled where to go for dinner & found this 富记大排档tai wai.

富记大排档tai wai

富记大排档tai wai

so we went on a dinner thrill (a pun on trail) to 富记大排档tai wai, just 1 stop from shatin on the east rail line 东铁线 on 5.6.2015.

have google map will travel. it would not have been possible otherwise. the “thrill” led us to a market & food centre, just like we had at HDB estates. haha! 🙂

富记大排档tai wai kitchen

富记大排档tai wai kitchen

the kitchen was like any of our zi char 煮炒 kitchen. 🙂

富记大排档tai wai

富记大排档tai wai

we took the last table. place was full. say about 7 or 8 tables.

look at the plastic sheets covering this eating place, right next to the wet market. it is exactly like a korean pojangmacha 포장마차包藏马车 (those you see in korean dramas where the girl always get drunk & got piggyback home); or the japanese yatai at fukuoka, or izakayas 居酒屋。

take your pick 冻乌鱼

there were some fresh seafood displayed. i did not see the tanks, so perhaps it was not the live seafood in some of the hong kong daipaidongs like what we had at chan kun kee 陈根记 the evening before.

i read several good reviews on openrice hk, like the hand-tear chicken 手撕鸡 & steamed turbot.

we wouldn’t be able to take 1 chicken & not even 1/2 chicken if we want to try other dishes. also we just had salt baked chicken 盐焗鸡 at chan kun kee 陈根记 the evening before.

eggplant with minced pork (1 look) HK$68

eggplant with minced pork (1 look) HK$68

i ordered the eggplant.

on the board it showed “1 look”. pronounced in cantonese this means 1 whole roll. 🙂

eggplant with minced pork (1 look) HK$68

eggplant with minced pork (1 look) HK$68

this dish is actually nothing new. we have it in most zi char stalls here, except that they are always cut brinjals & sometimes served in claypot. this “1 look” was quite an interesting presentation that in a way showcase the interesting, not-always-traditional cooking.

it was very expensive though, HK$68 for this dish at a market stall daipaidong..haha! whatever i am happy!^^

steamed egg with minced pork HK$52

steamed egg with minced pork HK$52

the 三式蒸蛋steamed egg with minced pork HK$52 was also a most reviewed dish. 🙂

steamed egg with minced pork HK$52

steamed egg with minced pork HK$52

not sure where the 三式 3 styles were. the egg was quite nice, smooth, nothing special really, can do anytime at home. the sauce a bit salty, fortunately egg ok, so not ideal.

steamed egg with minced pork HK$52

steamed egg with minced pork HK$52

& again HK$52 was very expensive for this simple dish in this kind of market stall daipaidong.

steamed turbot with 陈皮

the steamed turbot was only HK$98! ^^

steamed turbot with 陈皮

steamed turbot with 陈皮

so shiok!^^

steamed turbot with 陈皮

steamed turbot with 陈皮

港蒸steamed HKstyle. it was very nice, though for comparison, turbot flesh was more rough 粗 c/w grouper so it was not quite the level of the steamed grouper at we had at chan kun kee 陈根记 the evening before.

steamed turbot with 陈皮

still, it was excellent dish for HK$98. i would take it again anytime! 🙂

it was a great find for me. the thrill if the food trail!

i would not order the egg the next time, but i am ok to pay HK$68 for the eggplant. it was good even though not super & not unusual.

i would definitely try the hand-tear chicken 手撕鸡! just look at the photo of the standing chicken here, diners in plastic gloves ready to tear it apart!

dinner was HK$226 for the 3 dishes. 🙂

盐水铰

盐水铰

went to 10,000 buddhas monastery (man fat sze 万佛寺) in the morning.

my hiking shoes have been serving me faithfully for 5-6years. now the left shoe sole has open up. someone that affected my mood. maybe also running out of steam, or just destroyed by the scorching sun the past 2 days at cheung chau & lama islands.

decided not to go far so ended up in mong kok around noon on 5.6.2015.

旺角小肥羊 LittleSheep at agile street

saw this place 旺角小肥羊 LittleSheep at agyle street. didn’t want to walk around too much so just try our luck.

小肥羊mongkok dimsum menu

we ordered 4 dimsum items – 3 were HK$9.80, only the beef fun cheong was HK$12.980.

the first dish we were served, the beef fun cheong was absolutely horrendous!

the skin was tough, and at the end of it we did not find 1 single piece of beef.

the char siew fun cheong i had at taoheung super 88 稻香超级渔港 the next day was just slightly better (meaning very bad too!). all the singapore restaurants like crystal jade, imperial treasures, canton paradise, tunglok etc were all miles better, made me realise that in HK do not order any fun cheong in dimsum restaurants except at timhowan & some other more notable places.

both the chicken feet & steamed pork ribs were very good, almost same as treasure lake restaurant 宝湖 at central (chicken feet at the latter was better i think).

but best was the rice! it was so very fragrant!^^

beef tripes 金钱肚

steamed live grouper for HK$128

the night before we went to chao inn at kwun tong for dinner (very good teochew 打冷) at 9pm & got back 11pm+.

this evening decided not to go far. also staying at royal park hotel at shatin, we had not walked around shatin park right behind the hotel. so we decided to take a 20mins walk along shatin park 沙田公园by the river 城门河 on the way for daipaidong dinner at chan kun kee 陈根记大排档 on 4.6.2015.^^

chan kun kee 陈根记大排档

we made very good steamed fish at home, almost same, & we get very fresh fish (not live though) from chinatown, so i eat this often. still i found it very good!^^

fried mixed veg HK$48

fried mixed veg HK$48

we had a fried mixed veg, quite non descript i supposed. still i liked it, very good balance to the meat dishes.

dinner came to HK$224 = about S$40. really good meal!

after dinner we tried to take a bus back to royal park hotel but could not really find out which bus to take. my internet search says 85, but the bus at yuen wo street was 85k & driver not very helpful.

in the end we took a taxi back, anyway it was very near so just flag down price of HK$22.

Good Dimsum Bad Service @ Treasure Lake Restaurant Central 宝湖海鲜酒家 on 4Jun2015

steamed chicken feet

steamed chicken feet

after pouring enough sweat walking 2hrs+ at lamma island 南丫岛 in the relentless scorching sun, we took the 2.35pm ferry arrived central pier about 3.05pm on 4.6.2015.

we thought of having dimsum (enough of beef briskets noodles type or 牛仔面, which we just had very nice ones in the morning at  lamma island 南丫岛, & not wanting heavy meal), so walked to central station via IFC with the comforting thought that we could always go to yat lok 一乐 for roast goose if need be.

we decided to try the dimsum at this treasure lake restaurant central 宝湖海鲜酒家, just because it was about the first ok looking dining place on the way to stanley street. haha! 🙂

treasurelake restaurant central 宝湖海鲜酒家

it was the typically bad service place. i asked to have a look at the menu, and the restaurant manager or lead waiter showed a black face. to is & other servers’ credit, they did later show more cheerful service.

we ordered 5 dimsum dishes only – chicken feet, steamed pork ribs, chiu chow fun guo or teochew dumplings, char siew fun cheong & 4 treasures.

and waited very long, like >1/2hr, maybe 40mins? & 2 dishes we ordered, first char siew fun cheong after waiting for 1/2hr & then chiu chow fun guo after eating the other 3 dishes, were sold out.

not so satisfying experience eh? luckily the food was good.

it was super delicious!^^ wow! the aroma. so very intense, yet the meat is moist, tender, flavourful & not really strong taste. really love it! ^^

after that we walked further down stanley street to shing kee 盛记daipaidong…they only opened at 6pm. unlikely to come here as not so convenient from our royal park hotel at shatin to come here in the evening just to eat at the daipaidong.

Most Shiok 超爽 Teochew “Her Bun” i.e. Cold Cooked Fish @ Chao Inn 潮楼 on 3Jun2015

mullet 乌鱼

mullet 乌鱼

had a most shiok teochew “her bun” dinner at chao inn 潮楼 at kwun tong on 3.6.2015….超爽!^^

after 9pm, they have 打冷 40% discounts 6折. so it was great value too! 🙂

don’t usually want to take teochew porridge (expensive & not nice) or even teochew “her bun” (expensive & not great) in Singapore. this one at Chao Inn (潮楼)super nice…

we had 2 fish, 1 braised goose, 1 soup + 1 dessert = HK$213nett=about S$37nett.^^

chao inn 潮楼, like the other taoheung group restaurants, has a electronic queueing system. 🙂

there’s a special soup chicken feet 粉葛soup for HK$19.

it was was very good really, tasty!

we ordered just 1 soup as we were greedy & intended to order 2 fish. haha! 🙂

mullet 乌鱼

mullet 乌鱼

the mullet 乌鱼 was really, really good! the best!^^ it was so sweet & fresh. i used to take a bit with my sister at lao ah tee 老亚弟 at whampoa boon keng which was good too, but not quite so tasty & a bit more fishy. i did that myself at home too, same.

this one, the meat just fell off the skin/scales.

the braised goose was quite ok, above average, good flavours, just slightly tough.

but that’s a long way from the yat lok roast goose kind of satisfaction.

yellow croaker 小黄鱼

yellow croaker 小黄鱼

we wanted the big eye snapper 大目紅鰱but it was sold out. so we had the yellow croaker 小黄鱼.

yellow croaker 小黄鱼

yellow croaker 小黄鱼

it was super good too. we still placed the mullet 乌鱼tops!^^

yellow croaker 小黄鱼

yellow croaker 小黄鱼

in singapore, unlike mullet 乌鱼, yellow croaker 小黄鱼flesh is more tender & softer & falls apart when you pick up with a chopstick. not so here, it held up quite nicely.

maybe it was just chilled..冻乌鱼 & 冻小黄鱼!

杨枝甘露

杨枝甘露

i took the 杨枝甘露. it was just HK$16.

杨枝甘露

杨枝甘露

as good as the 许留山 and maybe cheaper? the whole dinner was HK$213 = S$37nett. so good!

Good Value Set @ SeaKing 海龙王海鲜 on Cheung Chau Island on 3Jun2015

cheese onions lobster

cheese onions lobster

we were late setting out for lama island 南丫岛 on 3.6.2015. we arrived at the central pier no 4 at just past 11am. the next ferry to lama island was at 12pm. so we walked over to pier no. 5 & managed to get on the ferry to cheung chau island 长州岛 instead. i forgot to check though for fast ferry so we got onto the slow ferry (1hr) journey to cheung chai, perhaps no difference anyway. we arrived at cheung chai 12.15pm. the morning porridge shop at the market which we intended to have was already closed.

we saw seaking 海龙王海鲜.

HK$198 4-course set

HK$198 4-course set

and had a look at the 4-course HK$198 promotion menu. it looked ok. i asked the grumpy fella if there were any other charges. he told me HK$25 all in for tea etc.

we decided to sit down & try our luck (maybe have our throat slashed…haha!)

cheese onions lobster

i saw cheese lobster on the menu, thinking it was cheese gratin. it seemed pointless when i tried to ask him for other preparation, so i told him to add less cheese. anyway it turned out to be a cheese onion sauce, and it was actually quite tasty. i added quite a bit to my rice too. haha! 🙂

lobster was small, like 300g? but it was ok. very low price leh…let the shop earn some money. 🙂

pan fried cod

pan fried cod

the pan fried cod didn’t look great.

pan fried cod

pan fried cod

but taste was good. not that i think they cooked particularly well. just that it was a very good fish, and OMT (oh my 天) they did not destroy it! good, good. 🙂 it was tender & oily flaky like cod should be, of course not talking about teriyaki cod at mikuni. my own teriyaki cod etc also better, but this will do. 🙂

steamed scallps with garlic & tanhoon

steamed scallops with garlic & tanhoon

we had 4 steamed scallops with garlic & tanhoon. this the same preparation as the razor clams at keung kee chicken porridge 强记鸡州。 their menu & signboard showed HK$35 for 1 for this dish alone was HK$140! (later i saw tons of bad comments on openrice & even a seaking Facebook site).

steamed scallps with garlic & tanhoon

steamed scallps with garlic & tanhoon

similar to keung kee, somehow they slightly over steamed the scallops. but actually it was pretty ok dish. no complaints at the price.

fried lettuce

lettuce pretty ok too. overall lunch cost HK$223. to me it was a very good value set. & the food was above average really, not cheap & bad. afterwards i saw loads of very bad reviews on both openrice & strangely a seaking Facebook site (probably not by seaking). in fact i think it was like 100% poor comments & i can totally understand why. service, cut-throat etc.

for us on the day though with this set, it was pretty good, and i would think much better value vs the HK$198 at keung kee the night before.
