Enjoyed the Food This Time @ Tian Bao Restaurant (天寶閣) on 28Jun2015

saliva chicken口水鸡

saliva chicken口水鸡

had dinner at tian bao restaurant (天寶閣) at taka with wife & daughter on 18.4.2015 but wasn’t impressed.

i had one S$50 groupon voucher left expiring on 30.6.2015, so not much choice than to go with sis for dinner on 28.6.2015.

tian bao restaurant (天寶閣)

tian bao restaurant (天寶閣)

the placed had 2 seatings 5.30pm & 7.30pm. it was quite packed and this was a monday. everyone was using the vouchers. i wonder how traffic be like if no vouchers, but groupon vouchers tend to keep reappearing anyway.

saliva chicken口水鸡

saliva chicken口水鸡 – S$8.80

we ordered the saliva chicken口水鸡 – S$8.80. it was pretty good actually.

i would say crystal jade lamian xiaolongbao version had a lot more kick.

saliva chicken口水鸡

saliva chicken口水鸡

this one was a large helping. chicken was good, chilli was mild but still quite flavourful especially taking a little together with the chicken. maybe my own saliva chicken口水鸡 standard.

soup dumplings 海味抄手

soup dumplings海味抄手

i had soup dumplings海味抄手the last time & it was good, so i ordered it again.^^

never knew there was a different version than spicy dumplings 红油抄手, which was the usual we had at crystal jade lamian xiaolongbao.

soup dumplings 海味抄手2

soup dumplings海味抄手

there were 6 dumplings. dumplings skin was smooth & meat filling was good.

soup dumplings 海味抄手4 soup dumplings 海味抄手3

soup lagi best!

this soup dumplings海味抄手, i think S$9.80 was very worth ordering.

deepfried tofu with pork

deepfried tofu with pork

we were deciding between braised beef & bamboo shoot & this dish. server said this dish was more popular. but it was a very average dish at S$13.80.

deepfried tofu with pork

deepfried tofu with pork

can’t really say the dish was not good. it was quite average if competent, nothing much to say about the tofu. & in comparison would be the worst dish we ordered.

dan dan noodles 担担面

dan dan noodles 担担面

dan dan noodles 担担面 S$9.80 was very good!

dan dan noodles 担担面

dan dan noodles 担担面

again the spiciness seemed to have been moderated, but it was still tasty & flavourful. i liked it!

ice jelly with cheng chao

ice jelly with cheng chao

the ice jelly was also something i had last time.

ice jelly with cheng chao

ice jelly with cheng chao

i did not actually remember it, but somehow i seemed to have gravitated to ordering the same item.

ice jelly with cheng chao

ice jelly with cheng chao

it was refreshing. a small dish at S$3.80, i guess not cheap or expensive in particular. 🙂

i find the pricing generally far more expensive than a good restaurant like crystal jade e.g. 小笼包 S$9.80 (i.e. w/o the groupon discounts). guess problem with such a place is always what dishes one orders. this time we ordered mostly good dishes we liked, except that we still had a lemon (the deep-fried tofu dish).

the dinner for 2pax came to S$30.80 using my groupon vouchers (S$25 for S$50 voucher value). at this price i would say the food was pretty good!^^

Nice Light Lunch @ Crystal Jade Lamian Xiaolongbao HollandV on 11jan2015

小笼包

小笼包

went for a light lunch with wife & daughter @ crystal jade lamian xiaolongbao at hollandv yesterday on 11.1.2015.

we ordered the usual xiaolongbao 小笼包. it was good as usual – great soup & tasty fillings, skin that held together & not thick. we added a second order later. ^^

抄手

抄手

ordered the other favourite spicy dumplings 抄手 too. today this was not too good. the sauce seemed dilute, overall not flavourful enough & not as attractive as canton paradise.

soemthing new for me was the beef brisket ramen 牛腩拉面. happy to note that this was much better than i expected. the beef brisket 牛腩 was really good. there was a bit of beef tendon as well.

this my daughter’s favourite. i didn’t think it was better than that served in sicc though. i used the spicy sauce from the spicy chicken 口水鸡 & the noodles were really nice & flavourful with the sauce.

a relax lunch on a quiet sunday. 🙂

6pax Family Dinner @ Canton Paradise on 28Nov2014 (Update)

crispy deepfried tofu v

crispy deepfried tofu

6pax family dinner at canton paradise @ j-cube on 28.11.2014. 🙂

this a quick update, as we were just here 2 days ago.^^

not that we had a choice. did not read the small prints, & bought 2 groupons which (1) could not be redeemed at canton paradise star vista but at other outlets, nearest being j-cube, & (2) could only redeem 1 voucher per visit. & today the last day for redemption, so we had to come back again before voucher expired.

this time it was 7.30pm on a friday night & parking was near impossible. we came in 2 cars. 4 of us got into the carpark at 7.10pm. the second car was in the queue but decided to try for another carpark, unsuccessfully & returned to queue again after 20 cars lining the way down the car park ramp & outside. so never get out of the queue! they came to the restaurant like 40mins later.

we tried a few new dishes.

the crispy deep-fried tofu (S$5.80) was very good, crisp outside, smooth consistent inside.

my daughters liked the crispy cod fritters (S$9.80). my wife & I taught sauce was a bit sweet.

Spicy Sichuan Poached Chicken 口水鸡

decided to try 口水鸡, the sichuan spicy poached chicken. 🙂

we had 口水鸡 many times at crystal jade lamian xianglongbao. 🙂

i can do a very good poached chicken, so like many dishes, getting the spicy sauce right is the key.

口水鸡 sichuan spicy poached chicken

saliva chicken (口水鸡)

crystal jade version of saliva chicken (口水鸡)

i decided to use a modified 蒜泥白肉 sauce recipe, as it was a dish i served several times & everyone liked. 🙂

i did without all the additional stuff like cinnamon bark, clove, anise seeds, cumin, and just added chicken stock, sliced ginger, chopped shallots, chopped garlic, brown sugar & sichuan spicy chilli oil, looks something like this-

  • 1 cup stock (chicken stock or from the pork)
  • 2 tbsp light soy sauce (80ml)
  • 1 tbsp brown sugar
  • 1 tsp sesame oil
  • 1 cm sliced ginger
  • 2 tsp chopped garlic
  • 2 chopped shallots
  • 2 tbsp sichuan spicy chilli oil

the sauce was delicious, mildly sweet & delivering the spicy punch.

comparing with crystal jade version (above photo), it looked just as potent but actually not as 麻辣 as crystal jade version which is itself not very 麻辣. guess i missed the toasted sesame part (i did have coriander for garnishing though not in the photos).

though some like me will take it even spicier, the current preparation is easier on the palate for most. & many friends had enjoyed the 蒜泥白肉 in no small part because of the sauce. 🙂

OK Lunch @ Paradise Dynasty on 29Sep2014

crystal pork (镇江淆肉)

crystal pork (镇江淆肉)

a friend bought lunch at paradise dynasty at level 4 ion orchard today on 29.9.2014. 🙂

they do not take reservations so we arranged to go early at 11.45am to avoid, traffic, carpark issues & avoid queue.

spicy dumplings (抄手)

spicy dumplings (抄手)

we had 2 appetisers.

crystal pork (镇江淆肉) was competent, nothing special.

spicy dumplings (抄手) was good, guess no better than crystal jade lamian xiaolongbao.

belly pork ramen

belly pork lamian

the belly pork lamian was good! the soup was very tasty & smooth, the braised belly pork was excellent & the egg, noodles etc were all good. this was as good as a good japanese chashumen. 🙂

poached sliced beef

poached sliced beef

we tried a poached sliced beef. it was pretty good, the usual tenderised beef. 🙂

ambience was good & there was a good lunch crowd though not full & there was no queue when we left about 130pm.

pumpkin dessert

pumpkin dessert

my friend ordered a pumpkin dessert. it was non-descript. i guess a “healthy” dessert.

there was a discount on some menu items under PGR (paradise gourmet rewards) + 30% rebates on non-discounted items. i think lunch came to about $50nett & there was a S$4.50 rebate. ok & doable lunch though nothing special. 🙂

Ever Satisfying Lunch @ Imperial Treasure Teochew on 17Aug2014

1/2 teochew braised duck S$28

1/2 teochew braised duck S$28

last time i came imperial treasure teochew at level 4 ngee ann city was on 1.9.2013. wa…almost a year now…

that’s the plus point about blogging. memories do not get better, but at least i can refer back. 🙂

i ordered the usual 1/2 teochew braised duck S$28, and charcoal broiled pork collar. children ordered the rest. 🙂

i think the teochew braised duck is exceedingly good, lots better than all the teochew restaurants like chui huay lim, or cheaper ones like mu liang zai liang kee. it was the usual moist, tender & very flavourful. i do a very good teochew braised duck myself. this though was somewhat different, the meat was tender but firm, not overcooked, and very flavourful. 🙂

charcoal broiled pork collar was good as always, though portion had shrunk!

虾饺

har gao (虾饺)

har gao (虾饺) always good here, thin skin, tasty filling. 🙂

har fun cheong 虾粉肠

har fun cheong (虾粉肠)

char siew fun cheong 叉烧粉肠

char siew fun cheong (叉烧粉肠)

the har fun cheong (虾粉肠) and char siew fun cheong (叉烧粉肠) were almost good HK standard, smooth skin tasty fillings. 🙂

this reminded me that the fun cheong at timhowan were also very good.

charcoal broiled pork collar

charcoal broiled pork collar

this was good – already said!

siew yoke (烧肉)

siew yoke (烧肉)

siew yoke (烧肉) was leaner & very good this time, very nicely pressed, good consistency, crispy skin & tasty. this such a standard common dish but surprisingly many other restaurants can still get it wrong.

chicken feet

chicken feet

this was ok competent.

steamed pork ribs

steamed pork ribs

this kind of too much bones & fat. taste was good but many places like royal china did a much better steamed pork ribs.

fried carrot cake

fried carrot cake

this was ok. did not leave any impression.

dried scallop egg white fried rice

dried scallop egg white fried rice

always enjoyed the fried rice here. this had less chilli & less robust flavours than the excellent spicy seafood fried rice at crystal jade lamian xiolongbao. have to put them both as my equal favourites. 🙂

the crystal jade version had inspired my own pretty good seafood fried rice. haha! 🙂

teochew fried kueh teow

teochew fried kueh teow

wife ordered the teochew char kueh teow. kueh teow was too soft but taste was pretty ok & there were quite many prawns. i am ok with this dish, not my favourite & for me neither was the one at chui huay lim.

salted egg custard bun

salted egg custard bun

this was good, better than the salted egg custard bun at royal china (with the strange mango concoction) but canton paradise might be even better than this.

total bill was S$186nett. not cheap at S$31pax nett for dim sum but a tasty enjoyable lunch with variety & quality of food to please all. 🙂

Seafood Fried Rice

#8 spicy seafood fried rice

spicy seafood fried rice

wife had appointment & children eating out this evening.

no dinner plans. found a packet of leftover rice (1 bowl maybe) in the fridge. don’t feel like doing anything else so did a fried rice in double quick time. 🙂

defrosted a packet of prawns (about 10 pieces), shelled & cut off the heads & kept for stock. defrosted a large squid, took off the red skin, dice-cut the body. i seasoned both the squid & prawns separately with little bit fish sauce & white pepper. then put a piece of butter on pan on medium high till quite hot then fried the prawns. then removed the prawns & fried the squid.

for the rice, i added 2 tablespoon olive oil, put on medium high heat, added 2 tablespoon garlic & 1.5 tablespoon of the sichuan spicy chilli sauce. then i added the rice & break up the crumby parts with the ladle & let the chilli coat the rice grains. immediately i pushed rice aside, cracked 2 eggs & let the white firmed a bit, then spread over the rice, and mixed for 1 minute. then added the prawns & squid & off the fire, tossed a little & put out on the serving dish. then i added the chopped spring onions. voila!

the whole process including defrosting the prawns & squid, about 15minutes. 🙂

after whatsapping the photos, both son & daughter decided to eat some before going out, so we polished off rather quickly. 🙂

#8 spicy seafood fried rice

spicy seafood fried rice

i did the same fried rice with more elaborate preparations recently during a 9pax 12-course dinner for my friends on 15.7.2014 which everyone liked it a lot. this evening’s was i think just as good.

looking at the photo of the real thing – crystal jade lamian xiaolongbao seafood fried rice, i guess it was still kind of far off. both my children though liked it quite a lot, and they felt the rice was very good too. the rice were individual grains well coated not mushy & nice & fragrant. good wok hae! 🙂

4pax Family Dinner @ Crystal Jade Lamian Xioalongbao at HollandV on 21Jun2014

xiaolongbao 小笼包

xiaolongbao 小笼包

just had a 4pax family dinner at crystal jade lamian xiaolongbao at hollandv. it was 630pm but i managed to get parking across the road at warna road side carpark next to the mrt exit. 🙂

this time i wanted to order the spicy beef lamian 水煮牛肉面 so forgo our favourite XO seafood fried rice.

xiaolongbao 小笼包

xiaolongbao 小笼包

#1 xiaolongbao 小笼包 here was among the best i had tried. a friend commented on facebook that the skin look thick on the photo. but actually the skin was quite thin, and the soup in the dumpling was very tasty. 🙂

spicy dumplings 抄手

spicy dumplings 抄手

spicy dumplings 抄手

spicy dumplings 抄手

#2 spicy dumplings 抄手 was another favourite. enjoyed the spicy kick & also the vinegar flavour.

spicy beef lamian 水煮牛肉面

spicy beef lamian 水煮牛肉面

#3 i was not disappointed. the spicy beef lamian 水煮牛肉面 was not bad at all. fair amount of sliced beef, lots of vegetables & the soup was flavourful not over spicy & quite drinkable. of course it was not near to the real thing 水煮牛肉 or 水煮鱼 but that really is a different dish.

spicy chicken 辣子鸡

spicy chicken 口水鸡

spicy chicken lamian 辣子鸡 拉面

spicy chicken lamian 口水鸡 拉面

#4 & #5 we ordered both the spicy chicken 口水鸡 & the spicy chicken lamian so we could just share the noodles. this another favourite dish. chicken was sweet & the sichuan chilli sauce made it really flavourful.

wanton lamian

wanton lamian

#6 my daughter ordered the plain wanton lamian. it was good too.

the total for the 6 dishes plus 3 barley drinks for 4pax came to S$68, quite ok for a simple family dinner. 🙂

S$9.80 Quick Lunch @ Crystal Jade Lamian Xiaolongbao HollandV on 13Mar2014

xiaolongbao (小笼包)

had a 20mins lunch at Crystal Jade Lamian Xiaolongbao HollandV on 13.3.2014. they start serving the S$9.80nett lunch set (i think used to be S$8.80) only at 12pm!

i had great dishes here at crystal jade lamian xiaolongbao @ hollandv on 11.8.2013 & also at the taka branch with my G8 friends on 2.9.2013. i had not yet tried the quick lunch set though so today is the day. 🙂

prawn dumplings lamian

the xiaolongbao (小笼包) here is 1 of the best, very nice tasty soup, thin & smooth skin & tasty pork fillings. 🙂

the prawn dumplings lamian serving was like 1/2 a bowl, which actually served me fine as i don’t take so much carbo anyway though others might find it too skimpy/meagre… the prawn wantons were tasty too. the set came with a drink. i had the cold barley, usual good.

for S$9.80 nett, the lunch was quite fine, and service was good. they charged S$0.30++ for the wet issue which is fine and the waiting staff told me no need to order ice water which they also charge S$0.30 which is also ok, as the set came with the drink.

it’s not quite the meal for me though. i don’t really need to eat lunch and if i do the S$18pax ++ type 2-course lunch at reddot brewhouse on 12.3.2014 would be more worth the while. 🙂 that of course is strictly my own needs, not about crystal jade’s food…

Very Good Dinner @ Fukuichi Level 2 Triple One on 30Oct2013

good bento S$40

good bento S$40

very good friend of mine insisted on buying me birthday dinner. i had many meals already last few days so suggested crystal jade lamian xiaolongbao etc. he would have none of it. he wanted to go nandaman or keyaki. i was not keen for him to spend money at those places (nandaman i didn’t want to go at all, and i would only go for nice sunday brunch mini kaiseki at keyaki &  very occasionally for kaiseki dinner depending on what was served on the menu). i told him if he was buying me dinner he should at least listen to what i wanted, but he just waived away & said when i made those suggestions, it was to be discounted & not to be listened to..hahaha. 🙂 anyway the compromise was fukuichi. 🙂
Fukuichi was located at level 2 of triple one. we arranged to meet at 8pm on 30.10.2013 as he had to finish a phone conference. i was having repeated problems with my dell pc even though it was only 1.5yrs into a 3yr warranty & the motherboard had already changed once. i had to make 3 factory image restore and wasted away hours. that was the last straw & i decided to get a mac. i arrived 20mins early & walked over to epicentre @ 313 just across the road. good side trip & i kind of decided on which mac i wanted. 🙂

we decided to order a bento each. my friend was not satisfied & insisted to order a sake (he was evidently in greater birthday mood than i & took 90% of the sake as i told him he would)  & beef hobayaki S$38. i ordered a S$6 kani tofu to share as i read about it & wanted to try.

we were served a complimentary kobachi to get started – a small dish with chopped tuna. this was tasty, a good appetizer. the bento also came with a salad, simple cut cabbage that was very refreshing & enjoyable with the ponzu dressing. the kani tofu (basically pitan tofu with crabmeat) was good, tasty though i thought the one with tobiko at hokkaido sushi was better.

the bento was good quality. the sashimi (maguro, ika, sake) were all very sweet. the sushi & maki were competent. the pan-fried salmon was good, very tasty. the tempura were above average. 🙂

the beef (aussie) hobayaki(朴叶烧) with shitake mushrooms was quite good. i first came across this preparation at takayama. the local hida beef (飞弹牛) was an excellent wagyu, and was served on a magnolia leaf (朴叶). i would rate this beef as equal to that served at dozo, not as good quality as that served at the clan. 🙂

in all, a very enjoyable dinner. though we meet often, we had very good chat before calling it quits for the night.

Genuine HK Standard Roast Meats & Beef Noodles @ Noodles Restaurant on 6Sep2013

roast duck & char siew (S$18)

roast duck & char siew  – S$18

a friend organised lunch at noodles place restaurant at centrepoint on 6.9.2013. it’s a prima group restaurant, i could hardly recall when i last visited.

beef brisket noodles 牛腩面 - S$8

beef brisket noodles 牛腩面 – S$8

roast duck & char siew - S$18

roast duck & char siew – S$18

we were only 3pax so we went with the classic hong kong fare. each of us ordered a beef brisket noodles 牛腩面, and we ordered a roast duck & char siew combinations (双拼) to share. 🙂

we were there at 1pm & the open cafeteria styled restaurant was only 1/2 full, but it filled up a bit more later. i must say i was pleasantly surprised that the food was really genuine hk standard. the roast duck was fatty but really flavourful, perhaps even better than some places in hk. the char siew was also top quality in texture & taste, though the bbq pork collar at imperial treasure teochew was more marbled & textured.

the beef brisket noodles 牛腩面. i was lamenting that we were missing hk standard 牛腩面. the shanghainese/ taiwanese version 牛腩面 at crystal jade lamian xialongbao & sicc were well & good, but not my preferred hk version. the ones here though were excellent. they did not quite serve the beef belly type cut, but the brisket was indeed very good & it is true that most Singaporeans would prefer this leaner cut. 🙂

my friend bought lunch. i estimated the price would be about S$48nett for 3pax. i liked the roasts & the noodles and i will back for sure. 🙂

saliva chicken (口水鸡)

saliva chicken (口水鸡)

we had our G8 dinner at crystal jade lamian xiaolongbao @ takashimaya on 2.9.2013. 🙂

the food was mostly excellent overall for the price, though 1 of our friends could not take fatty food and was just having plain chicken soup lamian & another could not take some of the mala dishes.

抄手 – spicy dumplings

for starters we had 2 cold dishes, saliva chicken (口水鸡) & salt water duck (咸水鸭). both were very good! 🙂 the saliva chicken was mala (麻辣) with peppercorn (花椒), & very flavourful with a kick but you must like mala to enjoy! the duck was good & tasty but still not the standard of shin yeh, tunglok’s taiwanese restaurant at liang court.

the xiaolongbao at crystal jade is very good, and they were having 50% discount for the 4-coloured xialongbao – vege (green), mala (orange), truffle (black). usual (plain) – so 4 for S$3.10 instead S$6.20. we ordered 4trays x4 for 8pax. the spicy dumpling here was also very good, c/w the spicy dumplings we had at royal china. 🙂

sichuan song fish head (剁椒鱼头)

for mains, we had a stir-fried beef (the usual bicarbonate tenderised version) with 2 mushrooms & black fungus – this dish not so “lak ku” (in demand). the 剁椒鱼头 (sichuan version using song fish head) fared much better. it was very good but i still prefer the HK style or chilli black bean sauce style, like those at 香港街 stalls or food centres.

we also had 1 plain chicken soup la mian 清汤拉面 for 1 friend who could not take fatty food, and 1 beef brisket + tendon lamian to share. it was very good but 1 friend like me preferred the HK ngaolammeen (牛腩面) – why cannot find in Singapore leh?

all 3 desserts we ordered were good. the osmanthus aloe vera with wolfberries was very refreshing. so was the almond taohuay with black jelly (forgot to take photo) & the sesame dumplings in ginger tea 姜茶汤圆 were just great! 🙂

dinner was S$194 for 8pax, just over S$24pax. we had a jolly good time & good food, a bit heavy on the carbo side though. haha! 🙂

charcoal bbq pork collar (炭烧猪颈肉)

i ordered the braised duck, pork trotter jelly, smoked sliced trotters & the pork collar char siew; and daughter decided on the dimsums. 🙂

the braised duck was fabulous. the restaurants, whether hua ting or here at imperial treasure, had a way of braising duck (maybe lower temperature) that made the meat tender & consistent yet quite firm not falling apart like overcooked (close to western way sous vide). 🙂

the pig trotter jelly was very good, tasty (though my children were not quite fond of it). western fine dining has a lot of jellied items as their standard fare for degustation as well.

the smoked trotters was also very good, and my children liked it better.

the bbq pork collar was super! 🙂 i read when trying my hands at cooking char siew (not very successfully though as a result  i developed a very good miso char siew recipe of my own) that pork collar was the best cut, as the fat was more distributed than belly pork.

for carbo items, 1 of us didn’t take seafood, so we had a yangzhou fried rice w/o prawns only with char siew. first time taking that here but my son had always liked yangzhou fried rice, & my younger daughter liked it a lot too. i liked it too. our regular favourite scallop crabmeat egg white fried rice was not so overwhelming today but still more subtle vs the yangzhou fried rice. though i felt the seafood fried rice at crystal jade xiaolongbao was better than both. 🙂

& the salted egg custard bun (流沙包) here was the standard bearer, far better than the salted egg custard bun at royal china (which recently added mango which took away instead of adding to the taste)!

in total we paid S$218 for 7pax, kind of ex for dimsum but it was certainly a very gratifying family lunch. 🙂
