Very Good Dimsum @ Red House Prinsep Street on 25May2016

truffle mushrrom dumpling

truffle mushroom dumpling

went with sis & bil for dimsum at red house prinsep street on 25.5.2016. ^^

i was here a few times recently, one lunch & 2 dinners. 🙂

this time though we were just having dimsum. ^^

for me the quality of dimsum here is really very good, among the best i had in singapore.

& there is a 40% discount on dimsum up to end dec. all dimsum items were S$6 (except cheong fun S$7 & chilli crab bun S$10) so a very good price of S$3.60 per item after 40% discount.

prawn cheong fun 虾肠粉

prawn cheong fun 虾肠粉

prawn cheong fun 虾肠粉 was very good, quite exceptional outside hong kong. skin was thin & smooth, nice prawns & very tasty sauce. this a dish many good dimsum restaurants in singapore don’t get right!

har gao

har gao

har gao was good. many restaurants here good so not exceptional.

fupeiquin腐皮卷

fupeiquin腐皮卷

fupeiquin腐皮卷 also very good, among the best. 🙂

crispy char siew pao

crispy char siew pao

crispy char siew pao ok.

crispy char siew pao

crispy char siew pao

but somehow i feel timhowan at hong kong shamshuipo is just better!

dragon beard dumpling

dragon beard dumpling

the dragon beard dumpling was very good.

deepfried dumpling炸水饺

deepfried dumpling炸水饺

this “salad” deepfried dumpling炸水饺 served with salad sauce i didn’t like.

for me the very last in the line after the so many good dimsum items.

steamed pork ribs

steamed pork ribs

steamed pork ribs here very good, nice yam & flavours, not too fatty meat, among the very best!

steamed chicken feet

steamed chicken feet

steamed chicken feet also very good.

salted egg custard bun 咸蛋流沙包

salted egg custard bun 咸蛋流沙包

the salted egg custard bun 咸蛋流沙包, salted egg custard very good, but the pao so so, a bit thick the skin i think…

salted egg custard bun 咸蛋流沙包

salted egg custard bun 咸蛋流沙包

overall, still very nice salted egg custard bun la.

tea was S$1.50 each. we did not take any S$3 appetizer. total was S$49.40 nett for 10 dimsum items plus 3pax tea and ++…i think it was very good for the standard of dimsum.

the one thing here deserving repeated mention is the excellent service. service was competent, prompt, friendly with a smile everytime. we ticked/ordered wrongly the char siew pao & they just changed for us to crispy char siew pao, no questions asked! they changed plates all the time, gave extra wet napkins (when we ate chilli crab etc here last time they changed new wet napkins like 5 times), responded to all our questions regards promotions, menus, vouchers etc & never pushed us to order non promo items etc.

service was just superb, and it was every server the same cheerful friendly attitude, super! outstanding!

Excellent 5pax Birthday Lunch @ Red House on 26Apr2016

spinach musroom dumpling

spinach mushroom dumpling

OPS friend celebrating wife’s birthday & invited us for lunch at red house princep street on 26.4.2016.

(we didn’t know. we asked but he didn’t say till afterwards).

i have never been to red house for the longest time.

they are having a 40% off dimsum promotion till 31.12.2016!

food was surprisingly good leh! ^^

the spinach mushroom dumpling looked alluring & tasted really good. very nice mushroom flavours, and so refine. 🙂

har gao虾饺

har gao虾饺

the simple har gao虾饺 also looked so refine, and tasted wonderful too. 🙂

fu pei quin 腐皮卷

fu pei quin 腐皮卷

fu pei quin 腐皮卷 not overly oily, very crispy & good fresh prawn fillings, a very well done dish. 🙂

steamed bamboo clams 圣子

steamed bamboo clams 圣子 – S$10 each

friend ordered the steamed bamboo clams 圣子. dish was ok.

this a bit small c/w say ah yat or jumbo or long beach, quite similar size to the recent ones we had at tunglok signature orchard parade, but tunglok’s minced garlic oil & tanhoon a lot tastier than this.

steamed razor clams with garlic (beautiful photo taken by Jeanette at 6.10.2012 homecooked dinner)

steamed razor clams with garlic (beautiful photo taken by Jeanette at 6.10.2012 homecooked dinner)

actually even my own preparation is tastier than this.

lemongrass chilli lobster 香茅辣椒龙虾

lemongrass chilli lobster 香茅辣椒龙虾 – S$88

the lemongrass chilli lobster 香茅辣椒龙虾 was excellent! ^^

lemongrass chilli lobster 香茅辣椒龙虾

lemongrass chilli lobster 香茅辣椒龙虾 – S$88

usually it is a waste to add chilli to a fresh & expensive lobster.

this one though was done very well. the chilli was very tasty, i thought a bit thai style.

lemongrass chilli lobster 香茅辣椒龙虾

lemongrass chilli lobster 香茅辣椒龙虾 – S$88

lobster very good, the chilli did not overwhelm the sweetness of the lobster meat. enhanced it la… 🙂

fragrant crispy duck 香酥鸭

1/2fragrant crispy duck 香酥鸭 – S$23

friend also ordered 1/2 fragrant crispy duck 香酥鸭.

it is a variation of the roast duck which we eat too often.

this was deep-fried & could taste the fragrance of the spices. they usually served it with some crepe so the server proceeded to destroy (tear up) the duck. we didn’t want the crepe. friend’s wife commented the presentation was not good. in shanghai/jiangsu they would cut the duck in slices & nicer presentation.

also the duck was a bit dry inside, not such a good preparation.

spinach tofu 三层楼

spinach tofu 三层楼 – S$14

the spinach tofu was excellent, very tasty very well done.

spinach tofu 三层楼

spinach tofu 三层楼

i first had this 三层楼 at tunglok group maybe >20years ago. this one though tasted better than tunglok.

sambal kang kong

sambal kang kong – S$12

sambal kang kong was good, more than competent.

seafood hor fun 杂锦河粉

seafood hor fun 杂锦河粉 – S$12

the seafood hor fun 杂锦河粉 was very good too. very nice wok hae (wok fragrance!)

seafood hor fun 杂锦河粉

seafood hor fun 杂锦河粉 = S$12

the dimsum dishes were quite refine & the main courses were also top draw.

overall it was an excellent lunch, much better than i expected from a seafood restaurant like red house (there are so many similar places like jumbo, long beach, no sign board etc).

sorbet lemongrass jelly

sorbet lemongrass jelly

the dessert were ok but did not really stand out.

i enjoyed my lemongrass jelly with sorbet.

杨枝甘露

杨枝甘露

the 杨枝甘露  looked average.

orh nee 芋泥

orh nee 芋泥

the orh nee 芋泥  didn’t looked right. maybe taste was ok?

lunch came to S$311 for 5pax, about S$62pax.

quite high for lunch. still i think a great place for a great lunch or dinner with good friends. must look a bit at the dishes to order, but i surely coming back again la! 🙂

Average Too Ordinary Dimsum @ Timhowan 添好运 at Westgate Mall on 19Dec2014

crispy char siew pao

crispy char siew pao

a friend cooked an excellent lunch today for 6pax on 19.12.2014. 🙂

after that 4 of us went to JEM (jurong east mall) to watch “exodus”. carpark was full so we parked at westgate mall which was linked to JEM at level 2.

after the movie we walked back to westgate mall & had a light dinner at timhowan 添好运 (still full from the excellent lunch).

we dutifully ordered the crispy char siew pao.

i must have had one too many of this. had much better crispy char siew pao at canton paradise several times. didn’t like it as much it now.

teochew dumplings, hargao & 马拉糕

teochew dumplings, hargao & 马拉糕

har gao was good but for me canton paradise’s har gao & imperial treasure teochew’s har gao were better.

马拉糕 was never my thing, even at hong kong timhowan outlet – an enigma to me. tasted like “wa kor kuay”.

teochew dumpling 潮州粉粿 was competent.

fu pei quin 腐皮卷

fu pei quin 腐皮卷

fried carrot cake

fried carrot cake

fu pei quin 腐皮卷 & fried carrot cake were ok.

anyhow overall the food was really mediocre, which to me meant a disappointment.

dinner was just S$39 but we had very little food for 4pax.

for me, there is no reason to have these average food when i can get better food at canton paradise, imperial treasure & crystal jade for largely the same price.

Great Dinner @ Canton Paradise at J-Cube on 26Nov2014

1/2 roast duck

1/2 roast duck

quick update 6pax family dinner here 2 days later.

we had an early dinner at canton paradise @ J-cube on 26.11.2014. 🙂

wife bought a groupon voucher S$28.80 for S$50. we went at 4.3opm to skip the dinner crowd, traffic & parking.

canton paradise @ j-cube

canton paradise @ j-cube

the restaurant was quite empty at that time.

har gao(虾饺)

har gao(虾饺)

har gao(虾饺)

har gao(虾饺)

we ordered the har gao(虾饺). good as always. 🙂

1/2 roast duck

1/2 roast duck – S$25

and of course our favourite 1/2 roast duck. the roast duck at canton paradise is really good, and this one was no exception, so flavourful and the breast meat so tender. this, like the roast duck at star vista outlet, is truly hong kong standard. the only other place i had roast duck of this standard was at the noodles restaurant.

spicy dumplings (抄手)

spicy dumplings (抄手)

the spicy dumplings (抄手) was very good too.

porridge (minced prok balls, kidney, beef)

porridge (minced prok balls, kidney, beef)

porridge (minced prok balls, kidney, beef)

porridge (minced pork balls, kidney, beef) – S$9.20

and we always like the porridge (congee), very smooth & sweet. we had the selection of 3  (minced pork balls, kidney, beef). mmmm…really nice.

S$8.80 weekday afternoon promotion

S$8.80 weekday afternoon promotion

they had this weekday promotion, just S$8.80 for 1 porridge, 1 dim sum & drink, from 2.30pm to 5pm. it’s a really good deal but we could not take that as we had our groupon deal. i probably come back here with some friends. 🙂

the dinner for 2pax came to S$58nett including drink & water, towels etc, so we had to top up S$8, which added to a total of S$37 with the voucher, a very good price for the food we had. 🙂

Good Hong Kong Food @ Canton Paradise Star Vista on 21Sep2014

roast duck

1/2 roast duck

had an early 5pax family dinner @ canton paradise on 21.9.2014.  last time we came was also early dinner on 22.2.2014.

it is first come first serve so we went at 5.45pm to avoid long queue. 🙂

it’s hk food. the hk roast duck looked particularly inviting & we decided to order 1/2duck at S$25. it was very good, genuinely hk standard. can’t say it was better than the roast duck at noodles restaurant @ centrepoint, but i would order this again anytime. 🙂

we ordered another roast 2-combo (烧腊双拼) of roast pork & char siew (did not take photos). it was competent but the char siew was not comparable with the excellent charcoal broiled pork neck & also the char siew at imperial treasure teochew ngee an city.

crispy char siew pao

crispy char siew pao

crispy char siew pao

crispy char siew pao

tastebuds had not changed since our feb2014 visit. my daughter still likes this crispy char siew pao best & i still preferred the crispy char siew pao @ timhowan toa payoh. for me though, both were not of the standard of timhowan @ shamshuipo hk.

canton paradise @ star vista

hat gao

har gao

har gao was good, the skin tore when i picked up one, but the prawns filling was excellent-fresh, bouncy, sweet. 🙂

har fun cheong

charsiew fun cheong

charsiew fun cheong on this occasion was very poor, totally sub-par..the charsiew was not tasty enough & the cheong fun (肠粉) was thick & not smooth. this was the worse dish for me! 😦

we also had a xianglongbao. on this occasion the skin was a bit thick & the soup inside was not as sweet, so a poor second to crystal jade la mian xiaolongbao! 😦

porridge 3-combo=beef, pork live, kidney

porridge 3-combo=beef, pork liver, kidney

plain hk noodles

plain hk noodles

i did not try the noodles but it looked good & no different from hk standard & the children liked it too.

we ordered the porridge 3-combo=beef, pork liver, kidney. the porridge was excellent – velvety smooth & tasted great. the beef, pork liver, kidney were all great! i could come here just for porridge & roast duck. 🙂

salted egg bun

salted egg bun

salted egg bun

salted egg buns (流沙包)

daughter thought salted egg buns (流沙包) here was best. it was very good! for me, the 咸蛋流沙包 at imperial treasure teochew at ngee ann city was just as good. 🙂

Ever Satisfying Lunch @ Imperial Treasure Teochew on 17Aug2014

1/2 teochew braised duck S$28

1/2 teochew braised duck S$28

last time i came imperial treasure teochew at level 4 ngee ann city was on 1.9.2013. wa…almost a year now…

that’s the plus point about blogging. memories do not get better, but at least i can refer back. 🙂

i ordered the usual 1/2 teochew braised duck S$28, and charcoal broiled pork collar. children ordered the rest. 🙂

i think the teochew braised duck is exceedingly good, lots better than all the teochew restaurants like chui huay lim, or cheaper ones like mu liang zai liang kee. it was the usual moist, tender & very flavourful. i do a very good teochew braised duck myself. this though was somewhat different, the meat was tender but firm, not overcooked, and very flavourful. 🙂

charcoal broiled pork collar was good as always, though portion had shrunk!

虾饺

har gao (虾饺)

har gao (虾饺) always good here, thin skin, tasty filling. 🙂

har fun cheong 虾粉肠

har fun cheong (虾粉肠)

char siew fun cheong 叉烧粉肠

char siew fun cheong (叉烧粉肠)

the har fun cheong (虾粉肠) and char siew fun cheong (叉烧粉肠) were almost good HK standard, smooth skin tasty fillings. 🙂

this reminded me that the fun cheong at timhowan were also very good.

charcoal broiled pork collar

charcoal broiled pork collar

this was good – already said!

siew yoke (烧肉)

siew yoke (烧肉)

siew yoke (烧肉) was leaner & very good this time, very nicely pressed, good consistency, crispy skin & tasty. this such a standard common dish but surprisingly many other restaurants can still get it wrong.

chicken feet

chicken feet

this was ok competent.

steamed pork ribs

steamed pork ribs

this kind of too much bones & fat. taste was good but many places like royal china did a much better steamed pork ribs.

fried carrot cake

fried carrot cake

this was ok. did not leave any impression.

dried scallop egg white fried rice

dried scallop egg white fried rice

always enjoyed the fried rice here. this had less chilli & less robust flavours than the excellent spicy seafood fried rice at crystal jade lamian xiolongbao. have to put them both as my equal favourites. 🙂

the crystal jade version had inspired my own pretty good seafood fried rice. haha! 🙂

teochew fried kueh teow

teochew fried kueh teow

wife ordered the teochew char kueh teow. kueh teow was too soft but taste was pretty ok & there were quite many prawns. i am ok with this dish, not my favourite & for me neither was the one at chui huay lim.

salted egg custard bun

salted egg custard bun

this was good, better than the salted egg custard bun at royal china (with the strange mango concoction) but canton paradise might be even better than this.

total bill was S$186nett. not cheap at S$31pax nett for dim sum but a tasty enjoyable lunch with variety & quality of food to please all. 🙂

deep-fried fu pie quin 腐皮卷

was going to amk & decided to drop by kowloon dim sum @ amk ave 5  about 4.30pm on 23.3.2014.

the dim sum joint was located at the coffee shop at blk 151 next to hk street chun kee.

sausage chicken steamed rice

we ordered the char siew fun cheong & sausage chicken steamed rice as those were typical hong kong dishes.

the best dish turned out to the the deep-fried fu pei quin. it came with the green wasabi mayo, very crispy & tasty.

the fun cheong was edible but poor, a let down & far cry from the very smooth fun cheong drizzled with nice flavourful sauce that one gets in dim sum restaurants in singapore like imperial treasure & crystal jade & hong kong (of course kowloon dim sum is no restaurant so perhaps cannot make comparison but only as reference for the dishes).

the sausage steam rice (i forgot to take picture!) had many pieces of nice tender chicken (all wing parts). the sauce was no comparison with hong kong but still nice with the rice.

the steamed pork ribs were more meaty than most in the restaurants. the taste just good enough but not among the better ones (say) like imperial treasure or crystal jade.

the har gao was also average. skin was not smooth, filling was huge & taste ok.

the cost for 5 items was just S$16 or S$8pax, which was like 50% that in the restaurants. so price was good. food was not bad either but just average mediocre, so it was not bad & ok to try but not something i would be attracted to do again. 🙂

3 varieties congee (liver, kidney, meatballs)

#1 the crispy char siew pao was quite good. my daughter liked this better but i preferred the one at timhowan. this had a bit much of the pork filling, & for me the flavour & the look were not as good.

#2 the har gao here was very nice, among the best i had. filling was tasty & skin was taut, not soggy, & thin.

#3 the xiao long bao 小笼包 was good too, quite a lot of the tasty soup, certainly beat the very dry ones at tunglok signature i had recently.

#4  the pan-fried carrot cake was just ok.

#5 the prawn cheongfun 虾肠粉 was among the better ones, smooth skin & tasty fillings.

#6 the prawns in crispy bean curd skin was very good, among the best.

#7 the steamed pork ribs was also average & a bit more fatty, not as good as imperial treasure teochew.

#8 the custard salted egg buns (流沙包) was very good, same as imperial treasure teochew & better than royal china.

#9 the congee was quite ok, but i think crystal jade kitchen at hollandv still better.

Canton Paradise Bill 22.2.2014

the bill came to S$62, so about S$15.50pax all-in, pretty ok price, same price & perhaps overall better than timhowan i had recently.

Restaurant Week 6pax Lunch @ Summer Palace Regent Hotel on 7Oct2013

mango puff, har gao, crispy char siew pao

mango puff, har gao, crispy char siew pao

S$40++ restaurant week lunch menu

S$40++ restaurant week lunch menu

for october G8 get-together, we decided to go for the S$40++pax restaurant week lunch at summer palace at regent hotel on 7.10.2013. 🙂

i don’t do restaurant week lunch these days as the offers are not great at dining city ‘star’ restaurants (often worse than credit card like UOB offers & more restrictive in menu than cheaper set lunches). also many ‘star’ restaurants do not provide menu so it is a “trust me” deal, when there are so many other good deals to pick & choose from? 🙂

anyhow summer palace provided the menu which looked fine. & we checked at the restaurant the usual lunch menu started at S$68++pax & the restaurant week menu looked better by comparison. 🙂

siew york meen sin

trio of dessert

trio of dessert

we had trio of dimsum. the mango puff  was ok, har gao with birds nest was good consistent with good dimsum restaurant but bird nest was too small a helping to be relevant. the puffy char siew pao was good  too sweet like a char siew soh (the reason i don’t take char siew soh) whereas HK Timhowan’s version was a crispy not puffy dough & less sweet & much better.

the sliced fish century egg tan chai soup was quite strange as 1 of my friends observed. it was quite tasty (though no better than a good lie tong), a bit heavy & confusing in taste & kind of poor in presentation for fine dining.

the 1/2 baby lobster in superior sauce (those small 300g ones), which ought to be the centre-piece attraction, was kind of disappointing to me taste-wise. the meat texture was also not bouncy like usual live lobsters & the superior sauce not flavourful enough.

the 烧肉面线 – mian sian was ok not as tasty as chui huay lim. the roast pork however was a disaster. hard & tasteless. i thought it was a poor dish for such a classy restaurant.

the trio of dessert was very average. the osmanthus jelly was ok but harder jelly not as soft & tasty as HK Timhowan’s or the ones they served at the Lantau Big Buddha vegetarian kitchen. the aloe vera & mango were just ok, average.

water & cashew nuts were free. they charged S$2.50pax for chinese tea, quite fair. 4 of us took the poh lei tea. ambience was great, service professional, but the food standard was kind of below par c/w majestic or even tunglok! there was a 1/2lobster but overall taste wise this specially discounted S$40++pax menu gave less satisfaction than a similar priced 6-course lunch set at majestic. of the menu dishes, actually the dimsum were better items (except for dessert) so maybe dimsum here but it sure would be ex.

one last thing, because it was restaurant week, they gave only 1 complimentary parking coupon for 6pax. there were 3 of us who parked at the hotel & my friends kindly let me have the coupon & i noticed on leaving the carpark that the charge was S$10.75 or something! goodness!

Early Sunday Dimsum Lunch @ Royal China on 25Aug2013

char siew

char siew – S$14

the children arranged early sunday dimsum lunch at royal china, a dimsum restaurant we all liked but had not gone for a while. 🙂

we booked 4pax at 11am on sunday 25.8.2013 & was advised we had to vacate by 12.30pm, quite usual. 🙂

some dishes i did not quite recall whether they were good or not. now that i record in the blog i can remember whole lot better. well, that’s why i blog. 🙂 the char siew was very good & a very good-sized helping at S$14.

scallop dumpling

scallop dumpling

spicy mala dumpling (抄手) -

spicy mala dumpling (抄手)

i didn’t remember the scallop dumpling. it was good. the har gao was also good (but i forgot to take photo). i thought i remembered the spicy mala dumpling (抄手) usually came in a glass with quite a bit of sauce & was quite good. this time it did not taste good, especially the filling. i would not order this next time. the ones we had recently at crystal jade lamian xialongbao were very much better!

special cheung fun - 1 char siew, 1 scallop, 1 prawn

special cheung fun – 1 char siew, 1 scallop, 1 prawn

deep-fried mango spring rolls

we ordered the special cheung fun which included 1 char siew, 1 scallop, 1 prawn – smooth & good as usual, liked it! i didn’t remember the XO fried carrot cake – cost a bit more at S$8.80 but liked this especially with the haebeehiam chilli. 🙂 also had the deep-fried mango spring rolls – the skin was great, crisp, somehow the prawn mango filling was not such a great matching. i can do without.

steamed pork ribs

steamed pork ribs

char siew sou

char siew sou

mango salted egg custard bun (香芒流沙包)

mango salted egg custard bun (香芒流沙包)

the steamed pork rib was very good as usual. my son ordered the char siew sou, the rest of us were not great fan of that. it’s competent but not my favourite. we used to like the salted egg custard bun. this time they had mango in it – mango salted egg custard bun (香芒流沙包). it was not a disaster, still taste of salted egg bun, but really it was a big minus to me.

the 4pax lunch cost S$89. overall we were quite ok with the dimsum lunch, nice environment, ok service (they forgot 3 of our orders), & generally good food. i would still prefer crystal jade’s 抄手, imperial treasure’s dragon beard carrot dumpling & fried rice at both places (very strangely there were no fried rice dishes on the menu).
