hk steamed song fish head 港蒸松鱼头

after the nice ah huat wanton mee, we moved upstairs to have some dessert. this on 27.1.2016.

my friend suggested to have the steamed fish head which was good here.

we were still in dunman food centre, at level 2 that is. 🙂

hk steamed song fish head 港蒸松鱼头

hk steamed song fish head 港蒸松鱼头

the fish head was the usual song fish head 松鱼头. 🙂 this was done the hk steamed 港蒸 style which i like also. i liked the spicy black bean sauce best ya…

fish was very fresh, and hk steam was a good preparation, nice taste of light soy sauce to bring out the sweetness of the fish. friend let me take the belly & eye, so i 不客气 la, just enjoy.

it was good. nothing special.

i think the香港街珍记 chun kee hong kong street is still the standard bearer for this dish.

Good Ice Kacang @ Sing Heng Dessert (& Bad Pig Trotters ) Mei Ling Market & Food Centre on 20Oct2015

ice kacang

ice kacang – S$1.40

we were at mei ling market & food centre & had the S$13 song fish head hk steamed 港蒸松鱼头 at hong man ji delights 鴻满记小吃.

& also pig trotters & pig liver & kidney soup (below).

i was looking around for ice kacang. the sing heng dessert stall was a bit hidden but i found it anyway. 🙂

ice kacang

ice kacang – S$1.40

at S$1.40 it’s probably the cheapest ice kacang in singapore. 🙂

the one i usually goes to is at adam road food centre. that is S$2, the usual price charged in most food centres.

i was thinking maybe they have a thing or 2 to learn from adam road when the lady  hardly added any evaporated milk. it’s like just a trickle whereas adam road pour like 20ml…lol.. onto the ice kacang.

surprisingly though, it was very good, even though i still prefer more evaporated milk. haha!

sing heng dessert

& that’s why i decided to record this. a good ice kacang.

pig trotters stall

pig trotters stall

to add to our song fish head hk steamed 港蒸松鱼头 lunch, we ordered pig liver & kidney soup & pig trotters from the stall selling them together with bakuteh & kueh chap. the stall proprietress is a vietnamese.

pig liver kidney soup

pig liver kidney soup – S$5

the soup was tasty, so maybe the bakuteh would be good. i won’t really want to try because the pig trotters was really bad & i lose confidence on the stall.

pig liver kidney soup

pig liver kidney soup – S$5

the pig liver & kidney were so so. i had much better ones….

pig trotters

pig trotters – S$5

the pig trotters i think was a disaster!

pig trotters

pig trotters – S$5

the braising sauce was tasteless. how could it be tasteless?

pig trotters

pig trotters – S$5

when i saw it, the colour & look were all wrong. maybe the taste & texture would be ok, but they were not, downright bad!

there was no gelatine texture & bite.

definitely a stall i will not try again.

Good Song Fish Head @ Hong Man Ji Delights 鴻满记小吃 Mei Ling Market & Food Centre on 20Oct2015

song fish head hk steamed 港蒸松鱼头

song fish head hk steamed 港蒸松鱼头

was with my sis & b-i-l this morning & originally we drove to alexandra village to take the song fish head. but even at 11am the carparks were completely full & many cars were waiting.

we turned back out at bukit merah & queensway to go to hong kong street chun kee 香港街珍记 at commonwealth crescent, but decided to drop in at mei ling market & food centre to try out the stalls on 20.10.2015.

hong man ji delights 鴻满记小吃

hong man ji delights 鴻满记小吃

since we wanted song fish head, we picked the zi char stall at the hawker centre, hong man ji delights 鴻满记小吃.

song fish head hk steamed 港蒸松鱼头

song fish head hk steamed 港蒸松鱼头

the song fish head hk steamed 港蒸松鱼头 was S$13. they also served the black bean sauce fish head but sis decided to take hong kong steamed. it would be S$18 at alexandra village & at hong kong street chun kee 香港街珍记 at commonwealth crescent.

song fish head hk steamed 港蒸松鱼头

song fish head hk steamed 港蒸松鱼头

the song fish head hk steamed 港蒸松鱼头 was good, as good as the established places, not sure if the fish head was smaller?

sitr-fry kailan

sitr-fry kailan S$6

stir-fry kailan was also very good, anyway better than i expected.

Thai Style Curry Fish Head @ Forture Restaurant on 3Apr2014

thai style fish head curry _ S$25

thai style fish head curry _ S$25

had not been to this old holland road coffeeshop 金山岭 for years.

used to love the thai style curry fish head at forture restaurant (still do!), and also the chilli crab many years back, basically because they were good & cheap then. for a while ah yat @ turf city was having 50% weekday discounts (now 40%) and the crab at ah yat at the time (up to 3 – 4 years back) were like S$19.90/kg after discount for indonesian crabs, which was cheaper than the S$26/kg at forture, and ah yat served very cheap seafood like bamboo clams (still does), so only dish that stood out at forture was the thai style fish head curry.

decided to go with a friend to take the fish head  on 3.4.2014 after the long lay off. fish head still very fresh & curry was great. the hor fun though was not good. disappointing really, usually quite good when i “da pao” (take out).

thai style fish head curry - S$25

thai style fish head curry – S$25

my friend paid for dinner which came to just below S$30. the hot fun was S$3.50, so the fish head must be like S$25 (far cry from the time when it was S$15 & i came often), plus we had 1 rice to share & also the towels. my friend asked for water & the charge was S$0.40.

i guess price was ok. the 1/2 fish head was a large one. it was fresh & the curry was tasty, but taking it after so many years, it was unique but really no better than assam fish head & indian curry fish head – both have more kick than this one. also considering that the spicy bean sauce song fish head at honk kong street cost S$18 (though this one here had vegetables with the curry), S$25 was not cheap.

it was satisfying nonetheless, but the allure was gone. i can have this sometimes & enjoy it, but i can do without too.

Comfort Food to Return to @ Crystal Jade Lamian Xiaolongbao at Taka on 2Sep2013

saliva chicken (口水鸡)

saliva chicken (口水鸡)

we had our G8 dinner at crystal jade lamian xiaolongbao @ takashimaya on 2.9.2013. 🙂

the food was mostly excellent overall for the price, though 1 of our friends could not take fatty food and was just having plain chicken soup lamian & another could not take some of the mala dishes.

salt water duck (咸水鸭)

抄手 - spicy dumplings

抄手 – spicy dumplings

for starters we had 2 cold dishes, saliva chicken (口水鸡) & salt water duck (咸水鸭). both were very good! 🙂 the saliva chicken was mala (麻辣) with peppercorn (花椒), & very flavourful with a kick but you must like mala to enjoy! the duck was good & tasty but still not the standard of shin yeh, tunglok’s taiwanese restaurant at liang court.

the xiaolongbao at crystal jade is very good, and they were having 50% discount for the 4-coloured xialongbao – vege (green), mala (orange), truffle (black). usual (plain) – so 4 for S$3.10 instead S$6.20. we ordered 4trays x4 for 8pax. the spicy dumpling here was also very good, c/w the spicy dumplings we had at royal china. 🙂

stir-fried beef

sichuan song fish head (剁椒鱼头)

sichuan song fish head (剁椒鱼头)

for mains, we had a stir-fried beef (the usual bicarbonate tenderised version) with 2 mushrooms & black fungus – this dish not so “lak ku” (in demand). the 剁椒鱼头 (sichuan version using song fish head) fared much better. it was very good but i still prefer the HK style or chilli black bean sauce style, like those at 香港街 stalls or food centres.

20130902_193432 20130902_193439

for carbo we ordered 2 seafood fried rice. this my new love affair. rice was very “tiok tiok” (means al dente not mushy each long grain separate & not sticking together) very fragrant & with lots of seafood ingredients. we ordered 2 portions (2xS$14.50) for 8pax.

we also had 1 plain chicken soup la mian 清汤拉面 for 1 friend who could not take fatty food, and 1 beef brisket + tendon lamian to share. it was very good but 1 friend like me preferred the HK ngaolammeen (牛腩面) – why cannot find in Singapore leh?

aloe vera with wolfberries

sesame dumplings in ginger tea 姜茶汤圆

sesame dumplings in ginger tea 姜茶汤圆

all 3 desserts we ordered were good. the osmanthus aloe vera with wolfberries was very refreshing. so was the almond taohuay with black jelly (forgot to take photo) & the sesame dumplings in ginger tea 姜茶汤圆 were just great! 🙂

dinner was S$194 for 8pax, just over S$24pax. we had a jolly good time & good food, a bit heavy on the carbo side though. haha! 🙂
