Just Average Zi Char @ Jin Wee Siglap on 25Apr2016

fish maw soup - S$25

fish maw soup – S$25

a friend organised a movie session on 25.4.2016. ^^

we watched 2 movies – “Room” & “Everest”. in between, we walked to siglap for dinner.

jin wee restaurant @ siglap

jin wee restaurant @ siglap

it’s a regular zi char eating house.

jin wee restaurant - menu

jin wee restaurant – menu

menu likewise pretty standard zi char fare.

we were looking at the lie tong 例汤 S$12 & the fish maw soup S$25. a friend decided on the fish maw soup.

soup was quite good. quite chokeful of ingredients, good amount of crabmeat & very tasty.

not as good as the fish maw soup at beng thin, but maybe not that far off.

seemed expensive at S$25 at a zi char place like this, but what’s important is it’s good la..

crispy pork chop - S$15

crispy pork chop – S$15

the crispy pork is popular here, we ordered the larger serving at S$15.

crispy pork was good, & the sweet sour sauce was well done too, a competent sauce not too sweet & good with the pork. sweet & sour not my favourite though.

overall i like loo’s curry pork chop better.

fried tofu with minced pork - S$15

fried tofu with minced pork – S$15

the fried bean curd with minced pork was quite tasty too.

felt expensive to me at S$15 for a simple dish with cheap ingredients, but maybe it was not exorbitant.

sambal kang kong - S$10

sambal kang kong – S$8

the sambal kang kong was nice if quite standard fare anywhere.

the dinner came to S$71 including drinks (we had 4 barleys + 1 tea) for 5pax, so about S$14pax. we ordered not much food though just 3 dishes + soup.

i thought the prices were just a bit expensive but it was quite ok dinner overall.

RI G20 Mar2016 Dinner – Good But Expensive Food @ First Culinary on 24Feb2016

cold dishes

cold dishes

it’s been a few months since our last G20 dinner at moi lum on 26.11.2015.

we did have another RI get-together attended by 28pax on 3.12.2015.

anyway this time the organiser arranged dinner at first culinary at ITE college central 2 Ang Mo Kio Drive on 24.2.2016. 11pax attended.

S$468 menu

S$468 menu

we had the S$468 menu.

food taste was good actually. but it was quite expensive for the type of dishes & ingredients. we paid S$55 each.

deepfried mantous

deepfried mantous

some didn’t like the longevity buns so we had the deepfried mantous instead. they were nice though they didn’t fit into the dishes & perhaps the original longevity buns would do.

deepfried mantous

cold dishes

the cold dishes was quite good standard. all were quite tasty. roast pork nicely done & standard of any good restaurants like tunglok, imperial treasure etc.

fish skin, baby octopus, ribs & the egg were all good. 🙂

fish maw soup

fish maw soup

our group now more environment conscious, so sharksfin changed to fish maw soup. bravo! 🙂

fish maw soup

fish maw soup

the fish maw was also very good standard, tasty, with good amount of crab & fish maw, not the gluey starchy type.

fish maw soup

fish maw soup

& the stock, soup base was good, so a sweet, tasty soup, beng thin standard la... 🙂

wasabi & peanut sauce prawns

wasabi & peanut sauce prawns

there was a wasabi & peanut sauce prawns.

wasabi & peanut sauce prawns

wasabi & peanut sauce prawns

both were very well down. same preparation deep-fried very nicely & added sauce. first time i had peanut sauce. it was good too.

steamed soon hock

steamed soon hock

we had a large soon hock, probably 1 kg size.

steamed soon hock

steamed soon hock

it was HK steamed 港蒸, very nicely done too, fresh, quite the perfect timing, very good.

abalone spinach duck web

abalone spinach duck web

the abalone dish was good standard but nothing special.

abalone spinach duck web

abalone spinach duck web

abalone is abalone, the duck web & brown braising sauce ok but nothing special, bot specially tasty..i had better la…

scallop broccoli basket

scallop broccoli basket

scallops & broccoli were all good. the basket was not yam basket but some potatoes, so so to me, no one took much.

yee meen noodles

yee meen noodles

yee meen noodles were pretty tasty.

sea coconut dessert

sea coconut dessert

sea coconut was the usual.

it was another wonderful evening of old friends coming together, great chat & sharing, strengthening of friendship & bonds.

overall the food was ok or good but pedestrian. nothing special except for the price, which was rather expensive at S$55nett each for the type of dishes. price was not outrageous but not great value also.

still between good value but mediocre food & this, i would rather have good standard food preparation & taste, and not so great value.

i heard hong kong people talking in the streets (actually in the MTR station), “sin you ho sek, yin hao dai sek” 先要好吃,然后抵吃…so first good taste, then good value la…

OK Zi Char @ HK Street Old Chun Kee on 31Jan2016

$25 zi char dinner

$25 zi char dinner

had dinner with wife on 31.1.2016. ^^

friends were watching djokovic murray austrialian open tennis finals…

we wanted to go to a nearby place & decided on hong kong street old chun kee 香港街老珍记 at commonwealth crescent…..

don’t know if the original one still at level 2 of the commonwealth crescent food centre? did not check…

hk street old chun kee

hk street old chun kee

place was well patronised at 6.45pm on a sunday.

hk street old chun kee menu

hk street old chun kee menu

the picture menu showed the food items & prices. made it quite easy.

wife didn’t really like their signature dishes like black bean sauce song fish head or bitter gourd.

we ordered their signature fish head thick beehoon soup, a tofu dish & a fish maw soup.

fish head beehoon

S$5 fish head beehoon

their signature fish head thick beehoon soup was pretty good.

maybe it was not as intense & flavourful as Holland Village XO Fish Head Bee Hun Restaurant 荷兰村XO鱼头米粉酒楼, but then we did not ask for the XO version..

fish head beehoon

S$5 fish head beehoon

still it was a tasty dish, lots of meat fish head pieces & the best of the 3 dishes we ordered, & the cheapest at S$5, 🙂

tofu in thai sauce

S$8 tofu in thai sauce

the tofu dish was ok but just ordinary.

tofu in thai sauce

S$8 tofu in thai sauce

nothing much to say really. at least it was quite passable.

fish maw soup

S$12 fish maw soup

i was of course thinking of the excellent fish maw soup at beng thin.

but alas, this was NOT!

fish maw soup

S$12 fish maw soup

miles off!

not that it was a bad soup. it was passable, but really starchy, gluey stuff…

dinner was S$25nett for 2pax no service no GST. ok but totally average except for the fish head beehoon soup.

but then we did not order the signature dishes so not a very good representation of the food.

i checked they are closed for 1st 4 days of cny & prices are different of day 7. my china relatives are visiting so i may likely bring them here to try out the dishes again.

Wonderful Dinner Treat by Our Good Friends @ Imperial Court on 5Nov2015

#1 (excellent) half suckling pig

#1 (excellent) half suckling pig

my good friends & mei mei arranged a dinner for my wife & i at imperial court restaurant at the grassroots club on 5.11.2015. ^^

6pax suckling pig menu

6pax suckling pig menu

i have wanted to try the gimtim group of restaurants but have not done yet, so this suited. 🙂

they have a 1/2 suckling pig set for 6. we had 7pax so my friend ordered 2 additional dishes.

#1 (excellent) half suckling pig

#1 (excellent) half suckling pig

the #1 half suckling pig was a large helping. it was much larger than what i had at ah yat & other places like hung kang & summer gardens.

i thought ah yat’s suckling pig was very good but this was equal or better & much bigger portions by comparison.

it was extremely good, very crispy skin & very flavourful, tasty meat. it seemed to be a combination of the 片皮 & 南乳 styles. usually the 片皮 style came with wraps & the 南乳 comes with the meat. my wife & i prefer the 南乳 style.

#2 (quite poor) fish maw soup

#2 (quite poor) fish maw soup

the next dish #2 fish maw soup though was quite poor.

no comparison like the fish maw soup at beng thin.

#9 addition sanpei chicken 三杯鸡 dish

#9 addition sanpei chicken 三杯鸡 dish

#10 additional beef dish

#10 additional beef dish

my friend ordered 2 additional dishes=#9 addition sanpei chicken 三杯鸡 dish & #10 additional beef dish.

sanpei chicken 三杯鸡 was so-so, maybe below par. the beef was pretty ok, not the very tenderised chinese style beef which i don’t like.

#3deepfried seabass in thai sauce

#3deepfried seabass in thai sauce

the #3 deepfried seabass in thai sauce was very good.

#3 deepfried seabass in thai sauce

#3 deepfried seabass in thai sauce

the sauce was not the usual thai sweet sauce (best for deep-fried chicken wings) but a bit tangy.

#3 deepfried seabass in thai sauce

#3 deepfried seabass in thai sauce

a very good fish dish by my reckoning.

#4 abalones with broccoli

#4 abalones with broccoli

the #4 abalones with broccoli dish was the usual good standard, with nice broccoli & mushrooms.

#5 (the best) steamed scallops

#5 (the best) steamed scallops

i love #5 the steamed scallops. i think they were the best! ^^

#5 (the best) steamed scallops

#5 (the best) steamed scallops

usually i prefer steamed razor clams to steamed scallops because usually steamed scallops get overdone (i don’t know why?).

these ones were very tender & sweet & tasty. excellent is the word!

#6 nice done prawns - sauce too sweet

#6 nicely done prawns – sauce too sweet

the #6 prawns were nicely done, fresh, tasty & crisp.

#6 nicely done prawns – sauce too sweet

i don’t like the sauce though, just overly sweet.

#7 (very tasty) braised seafood beehoon

the #7 braised seafood beehoon was very tasty.

& with good ingredients.

reminded me of my own crabless beehoon! 🙂

#8 fruit cocktail dessert with ice shavings

#8 fruit cocktail dessert with ice shavings

the simple dessert of the day = #8 fruit cocktail dessert with ice shavings was very refreshing.

overall an excellent dinner. i liked the suckling pig & the steamed scallops.

i estimate the dinner to cost about S$350nett, so about S$50nett, 🙂

nice yuzu cheese cake

nice yuzu cheese cake

it was a really fun evening. friend also bought a nice yuzu cheese cake. a truly wonderful time with close friends & great dinner. 🙂

& service was very good. the servers took several photos for us & also went digging up a knife & candles for the cake.

Wanton Noodles, Pig Trotter Jelly, Pig Trotters & Fish Maw Soup @ Whampoa Hawker Centre on 25Feb2015

fishmaw soup

幸福潮州小食 fishmaw soup – S$4

a few friends decided to have 4pax lunch at whampoa hawker centre on 25.2.2105.

whampoa hawker centre of course has many famous stalls. 1 of my favourite is the chinese mutton soup stall. i prefer yu ji (宇记) chinese herbal mutton soup (羊肉汤) but both stalls are about same, so the other stall #01-75 is good for me too.^^

anyhow on this day, it was chinese new year day 6 (初六), and both stalls were closed.

most other stalls were also closed – the hoover fish porridge, the braised duck & the hoover rojak were all closed.

1 of the stalls i like, 幸福潮州小食 a teochew food stall, was open. i ordered the fish maw soup, braised pig trotters & also the “ter kar tan” 猪脚冻 or pig trotter jelly. the stall also sells sharks meat & shark meat jelly 鲨鱼冻. i did not order them.

the S$4 fish maw soup was good as always, quite a lot of ingredients, and the taste of the soup was good.

pig trotter jelly 猪脚冻

幸福潮州小食 猪脚冻 pig trotter jelly – S$5.50

the “ter kar tan” 猪脚冻 or pig trotter jelly was i guess good as another at the restaurants & it was just S$5.50 for a good portion.

pig trotters 鲁猪脚

幸福潮州小食 鲁猪脚 braised pig trotters – S$5.50

the 鲁猪脚 braised pig trotters were exactly the flavour, texture & colour i liked. to me it was so much better than han jia bakuteh & pork leg, east coast lagoon food village.

the colours looked attractive & it was properly cut & neat, not dark & overcooked & uncut block like han jia’s. the texture & bite was just right, gelatinous & with bite, not falling apart, and the taste was light & flavourful.

one friend though preferred han jia’s, so really it was very much a matter of personal preference.^^

lunch dishes = 3 dishes for S$15

幸福潮州小食 lunch dishes = 3 dishes for S$15

the 3 dishes cost S$15. i liked all of them.^^

wanton noodles

wanton noodles – S$3

wanton

wanton

one friend bought 4 wanton noodles (S$3 per bowl).

it was good. noodles were just right QQ, and i liked the spiciness. it was no better though than any of the other places i had, wanton mee @ KPT coffeeshop (this a different black version)cho kee noodles wanton mee at old airport road food centre (i think this was better), or the wanton mee at first centre serangoon avenue 4.

i would put kok kee (was at lavendar food centre but not sure where (or if) it is relocated) as the best for me, and red ring as second.

mee chiang kueh

mee chiang kueh – S$0.80

the lunch including a bowl of wanton noodles each was S$7pax.

we walked over to blk 92 & had the mee chiang kueh (peanut pancake). we all preferred the peanut fillings. it was overflowing. very fun!

food was good, company better. after lunch 3 of us went to visit a friend who was admitted to ttsh.

Great Seafood & Good Value Dinner @ Kamjiazhuang 甘家庄 on 7Feb2015

crab beehoon

crab beehoon

daughter has become the family’s resident food convenor, sourcing out nice, happening makan & coffee places.

this evening she again organised an excellent seafood dinner at kamjiazhuang 甘家庄, located at blk 202 AMK ave3.

kamjiazhuang 甘家庄 AMK Ave3

kamjiazhuang 甘家庄 AMK Ave3

it is located at a coffeeshop. we had a reservation. the place was quite crowded.

we ordered a fish maw soup small. the colour did not look great, but the soup was in fact very tasty.^^

东坡肉 braised pork belly

东坡肉 braised pork belly

we asked for popular & recommended dishes. 东坡肉 braised pork belly was one, and it was done pretty well, very good standards – very tender, moist and w/o the oily taste (肥而不腻).

pumpkin prawns

pumpkin prawns

pumpkin prawns

pumpkin prawns

the pumpkin prawns was good, a slight variation/departure from the usual wasabi prawns. they were same deep-fried but coated with the pumpkin sauce (felt like it had salted egg in it but could not be certain).

conpoy tofu

conpoy tofu

conpoy tofu

conpoy tofu

the conpoy tofu was good too, very tasty, certainly better than the minced pork tofu we had recently at kok sen on 21.12.2014.

crab beehoon

crab beehoon

crab beehoon

crab beehoon

& the S$60 crab beehoon –

just look at the above photos c/w those at seng kee recently. the crab was huge 1.1-1.2kg, bigger than the one at seng kee (S$70). the crab was also sweeter & firmer than seng kee’s.

however, somehow i was still not fully satisfied with the beehoon. yes, this was much better than seng kee and about same as ming kee live seafood. in my memory (& maybe that was just a memory!) house of steamed fish was much better, tastier, but really cannot tell now.

butter squid with pork floss

butter squid with pork floss

butter squid with pork floss

butter squid with pork floss

daughter wanted to try their butter squid with pork floss. batter was good & squid was not tough. at first bite it was quite crunchy & tasty but i agreed with my wife that the taste was too sweet, perhaps it was the pork floss, couldn’t really tell.

overall, we paid S$124 for 6 dishes including a S$60 crab beehoon with a very good & large crab. for me, that was a very good dinner. 🙂

Fish Soup, Pig Trotters & Fish Maw Soup @ Whampoa Hawker Centre on 6Sep2014

幸福潮州小食 pig trotter

幸福潮州小食 pig trotter – S$5.50

went with sis & b-i-l to watch chinese operatic performance at nkf centre on 6.9.2014.

we went earlier at 6pm to have dinner at whampoa hawker centre. we all love hawker food! 🙂

幸福潮州小食

幸福潮州小食

there was the usual long queue for hoover rojak. the liang zhao ji 梁照记 duck rice stall was closed.

the next stall, 幸福潮州小食, seems to be popular with teochew pig trotter jelly (猪脚冻) & shark jelly (鲨鱼冻). i wanted more to eat the pig trotters and looking at the trotter jelly it didn’t look that great, so i ordered just the pig trotters & fish maw soup. think i will go back one day to try both the pig trotter jelly (猪脚冻) & shark jelly (鲨鱼冻).

幸福潮州小食 pig trotter

幸福潮州小食 pig trotter – $5.50

幸福潮州小食 fish maw soup

幸福潮州小食 fish maw soup – S$4

the pig trotters were very good. everything was right about this pig trotter – good gelatinous texture (in teochew we say “kar kar”), cooked just right, & tasty. just compared the above photo with that of the quite poor ones i had at the famous han jia bakuteh, pork leg at east coast lagoon food village on 4.7.2014.

the S$4 fish maw soup was a good deal, 3 fish maw, 2 fish balls, 2 pork balls, lots of minced pork & 2-3 think sliced pork. very good! 🙂

3pax dinner at whampoa market

3pax dinner at whampoa market

my sis came here to take her favourite fish soup at hoover fish porridge. she ordered 1 bowl of sliced fish soup & 1 bowl of fish head soup, S$12 including 2 bowls of rice. the sliced fish soup was sweeter & ok amount of fish. i usually like fish head but the quantity was quite small & not so much meat vs bones.

for me, i didn’t think much of this fish soup. it was ok but just like any fish soup. also fish soup not my favourite dish.

dinner for 3pax came to S$21.50, so about S$7pax, quite ok.

after dinner i saw 2 chinese herbal mutton soup stalls. i would want to try them next time.

i want to come back again! 🙂
