Great 2-room Apartment @ Ribcev Laz Bohinj on 16-18Sep2018 3pax Family Holiday in Slovenia 15-21Sep2018

our 2 room apartment @ bohinj

after hiking mostnica waterfall, we arrived shortly about 4.30pm at our apartment at ribcev laz in bohinj on 16.9.2018. the lady host was waiting. 🙂

our room was on the top floor.

there was one bedroom & a living/dining/kitchen hall, and a flight of stairs leading to a second room at the attic. we were staying here 2 nights from 16-18.9.2018.

the apartment cost €149.40 for 2nights, a tiny fraction of the price of grand hotel toplice at bled.

it was a great location just a stone throw from lake bohinj and the maercator (supermart) and tourist information, but then bohinj is tiny. everywhere is a stone throw haha!

the apartment provided free bicycles. bohinj is flat & easy to ride around the lake. we didn’t have occasion to use the bikes.

they also have a outdoor bbq pit except it was more like a hotplate rather than a fire grill. we didn’t use it.

apartment ideal for travelling in groups and families and usually a lot cheaper than hotels.

for our slovenia trip, all our accomodation except for hotel grand toplice on the first day were apartments.

Mostnica Waterfall A Nice Hike on 16Sep2018 3pax Family Holiday in Slovenia 15-21Sep2018

after the trip to beld island, returning by pletna boat, we drove to bohinj..

we decided to go first to mostnica gorge. but we didn’t read much about it, couldn’t quite find the gorge and ended up taking the trail to mostnica slap (waterfall) …a very nice hike it turned out…but seems that the mostnica gorge would be even better.

we drove through the town of stara fuzina and came to a lower carpark. we decided to take drive to the higher parts which was quite a long drive about 1/2hr.

we came finally to a rest stop serving food & drinks where there was a sign showing onward direction to voje valley & mostica waterfall. i asked directions here and a young lady working there said the mostnica gorge was on one side & the waterfall on the other.

we decided to hike the waterfall trail which took about 1 hr each direction.

it was a nice hike. just a bit hot though. we started at 2pm. sun directly overhead.

a pleasant hike.

but no gorges & river.

we reached the voje hut.

met some peopl coming out of the woods opposite the hut. they said there was a nice area to view the waterfall & pool at the lower parts, and we should turned right after crossing a wooden suspension bridge.

so we left the trail to the waterfall & turned left into the undergrowth opposite voje hut.

we retraced our steps to get back to the trail adjacent to voje hut.

we decided NOT to stop by voje hut, so we got back to our car at the first rest stop where i asked directions.

it was 4pm already, so we drove to lake bohinj and checked into our next apartment bohinjko @ ribcev lav 37. 🙂

Going to Bled Island on Pletna Boat Day 2 3pax Family Holiday in Slovenia 15-21Sep2018

took the pletna boat to bled island €14pax return

after checking out, we took the pletna boat from the ferry point next to hotel to bled island €14pax return.

it’s 35mins one way..even the professional oars man was shagged out resting several times during the journey..

walked around the tiny islelet did not enter the pilgrimage church of assumption of mary..

by the way the €2 ice cream on bled island is really good👍

always fun to ride on the waters.

there are 2 ferry points for pletnas. we landed at the back end of the of the island.the pletna man did not collect payment & we pay only on the return journey.

wife wanted to enter front the front jetty so we took the coast path to the front.

99 to be exact, and the tradition for the groom to carry the bride up 99 steps for the marriage to be consecrated in the church.

we took some photos of the prigrimage church of the assumption of maria.

the single-nave Gothic church was built on the island in 1465. Its special feature was the 52 m high free-standing bell-tower made of porous stone known also as buckwheat grain. The church gained its present Baroque appearance in the middle of the 17th century when the Chapel of Virgin Mary and the monumental staircase with 99 stone steps were constructed. Tradition still has it that the groom should carry his bride up all of the 99 steps in order to get married in the island church.

The Worst Hotel = Grand Hotel Toplice Atrocious Service & Rundown Floor & Room on 15Sep2018 3pax Family Holiday in Slovenia 15-21Sep2018

Just a word on the atrocious service and the lousy room in grand hotel toplice.

julijana, the restaurant at hotel, has good online reviews.

for that reason my wife booked 1/2 board including a 4-course set dinner & breakfast at grand hotel toplice.

few days before our arrival, wife emailed the hotel to ask the hotel to help reserve for us a table with a good view of the lake because this was for my 60th birthday celebrations. the email was written over an email trail where the hotel replied & confirmed the 1/2 board.

and how did the hotel replied?

the same person who confirmed the 1/2 board on the same email trail replied to say “the restaurant was fully booked and no table was available”!

how could you confirm and make your customer pay very exorbitant 1/2 board rate and then replied that no table was available. it was unnecessary vexing for your customer! luckily we were not the type to be bothered or vexed.

when we arrived at the hotel, and rooms were available for early checked in the same guy (who later identified himself to the person who confirmed the 1/2 board & yet replied my wife that no table was available!) tried to get us to pay additional €30 for early check in.

(that was unusual in my experience though if you want to guarantee early check in then of course you pay for that but usually hotels i have stayed in my lifetime do not ask that when you are at the counter. if they have the room available they just offer to you, especially when this was a very exorbitant room). this though was insignificant & not an issue to us. we didn’t need so we just deposited our luggage.

so we asked about the reservation at julijana restaurant & the really odd reply.

and the guy got the galls to say “i thought you wanted to book another table”. i don’t want to be rude here so i leave it as that.

then of course we ask since the matter of table reservation is cleared up, can he help us get a table with a good view?

and his reply?

o…that is the restaurant. you have to go talk to the restaurant yourself!

of course we have enuf of this guy & we have no time to be bothered with him.

later when we came back to check in at 3pm after hiking osjtrica,

we had 4 pieces of luggage, and the guy & the a young trainee just stood & look without offering to hep us with the luggage.

they really gave incredible customer service training to their crew in this hotel.

and the room?

hotel completely run down, floors were creaky…it was like the “worse stay room-wise” we had in our entire week in slovenia…

of course the location was good & the views were incredible and they have heated indoor swimming pool, and a really great breakfast, and you have to pay for all that. that’s ok.

but hotel service sucks and that was unforgivable!

& later we found julijana was a really good restaurant with excellent dishes & really good service for which we gave a really good tip to the server precisely because the service was genuine with heart & not expecting to be tipped.. 

and of course the next morning-

the front desk was never trained to greet their customers to say good morning!

when checking out –

the same atrocious attitude ignoring customers. this time though the young trainee guy offer to help with the luggage. we acknowledged him but didn’t need his help.

obviously it is better not to train your front desk staff, then at least they behave like normal human beings. lol!

A Really Good Breakfast Day 2 3pax Family Holiday in Slovenia 15-21Sep2018

we went straight to breakfast, sat at the terrace, and son joined us shortly on 16.9.2018. ^^

this the same restaurant julijana we had our best dinner inslovenia last evening. 🙂

breakfast semi buffet – cured meats

it was a semi buffet.

there was a huge spread. and high quality stuff.

the cured meats were excellent. there were many variety, different chorizo, salami, cured beef etc

some fish ceviche too

& there were fish ceviche…not sure what? maybe king fish? anyway sweet & tasty.

& very good tasty, smooth pate.

not sure if it was duck pate, very good but of course not quite the goose terrine of last evening.

& mushrooms & also grilled vegetables like peppers, zucchini etc..

there were all manners of bread & pastry, cheese etc. and nuts which i took a few.

really marvellous buffet.

and of course it was a semi buffet.

i ordered smoked salmon. it came with avogado, 2 sunny side up.

good competent, not tops in this department, but then the buffet spread was so good & this salmon was good standard too.

apparently it holds a number of frescoes painted in 1930 by the Prešeren Award-winning artist Slavko Pengov, including one portraying Vladimir Lenin as Judas Iscariot in a depiction of the Last Supper. It also hosts a number of statues by Ivan Vurnik.

Scrumptious 4-course Dinner @ Julijana – Our Best in Slovenia Day 1 3pax Family Holidy in Slovenia 15-21Sep2018

julijana has good online reviews.

for that reason my wife booked 1/2 board including a 4-course set dinner & breakfast at grand hotel toplice.

because of the horrendously bad service & really run down lousy room, we did not expect much of the dinner. basically i was telling my son probably could write off this dinner.

we had a full day staring with rowing on lake bled, a good lunch at mlino, trkking up osjtrica, vintgar gorge & bled castle, so would have been good to settle to a nice dinner.

& fortunately as it turned out the dinner was scrumptious, every dish was delicious, except for the dessert which are pedestrian, and my tenderloin steak with wrong doneness which was swiftly & politely replaced.

the service was friendly & cheerful, helpful, polite & responsive, exact opposite of the front desk manager & staff..heaven & earth it was..to give the hotel benefit of doubt, hopefully the behaviour of the front desk was exception rather than the rule!

there was a bread & salad buffet included in the dinner, so we took some.

my goose terrine was incredibly delicious, cannot remember a terrine so delicious, so fragrant & flavourful & smooth.

we had some terrine next morning for breakfast, also very smooth but probably not goose so not quite so flavourful.

son’s smoked trout terrine also very good. texture was more grainy which maybe more suited to the nature of the dish.

son & i liked the goose terrine better though both were very very good.

we all love burrata & mozzarella. it was light & tasty, and good combination with arugula & veg.

i had the creamy pea soup.

i always love pea soup & most creamy soup…tasty & delectable.

son & wife’s fish soup also good.

for me i prefer creamy soup to consomme.

wife’s sea bream with clams istrian home made pasta, with spinach was delicious.

sea bream had crispy skin & sweet. and wife who generally less excited with fishy fish dishes than i was very happy & enjoyed the dish.

the istrian hoem made pasta (which texture was very similar to the scialatielli pasta we had everyday on amalfi coast) was superb, very very tasty even taken plain, i think already infused with really tasty stock!

i do a very good pan roasted snapper myself so i was less enamoured with the fish here.

the fish, pasta, sides & overall dish was very good. 🙂

son & i had the tenderloin steak.

when we were chatting with the server, we said tenderloin so we should have it rare.

the steak came out medium well. son was ok with it. i took 1 slice, informed the server, showed him the cut meat & he swiftly replaced it.

the replacement steak was done perfectly, and as it happened maybe incidentally, it was a much larger piece of steak.

the rare (doneness) was perfect.

& the tenderloin was just so good, sweet, tender, not tough, world of difference from the medium well piece.

though this was such a basic preparation & the restaurant should have gotten it right first time, still the service recovery was commendable.

son & i took the flambe apricot.

presentation was great taste was ok, apricot was a bit sour. a competent dessert i guess but not really special like the other dinner dishes.

the menu did not include bled cake as an option.

my wife jokingly said it would be good if we could tried it, & the server produced the bled cake for her.

it was a good cake, light enough. just that we were not very the cake type or dessert type. wife was very happy & told the server “you made my day” and he did! for all of us!

what a difference good service makes!

the menu did not mention any coffee, when we asked the server said he could do that!

we had a very satisfying dinner and relaxing evening, great time to wind down & enjoy good food & company & chat with the server.

we gave the server a very big tip especially because he was just doing his job so well with his heart in it & not really with expectation of tipping.

Incredible Vista at Bled Castle Day 1 3pax Family Holiday in Slovenia 15-21Sep2018

on the way back from vintgar gorge to grand hotel toplice, decided to go the bled castle.

entrance €11pax was a bomb consider for a tiny place so just consider donations for upkeep la..

wife & on bought some drink. were told tickets offer discounts paid just €2.80 for 1 flat white 1 cappuccino 1 mineral water.

Bled Castle perched atop a steep cliff rising 130m above the glacial Lake Bled is a symbol of Bled and Slovenia. according to written sources, it is the oldest castle in Slovenia, first mentioned in a 1011 donation deed as castellum Veldes.

and it offers the finest view of the Bled island, the town of Bled and of the wider countryside of the Gorenjska region.

the views were just incredible… we stayed till sunset about 7.20pm.

we moved up to the upper courtyard with a 16th century chapel, the museum and the restaurant.

like many other scenic spots like bled island etc, bled castle is a popular spot for wedding receptions. there was one proceeding on the upper courtyard.

The Charming Vintgar Gorge Day 1 3pax Family Holiday in Slovenia 15-21Sep2018

got back to grand hotel toplice and check in room

very expensive hotel & very bad atrocious service will have lots to say on my blog & reviews later

then son (designated driver for this trip) drove to vintgar gorge.

a 12mins – 15mins short drive from our hotel to vintgar gorge. we parked at the carpark just outside the entrance.

a really nice walk on mostly boardwalk alongside river radovna  with its waterfalls, pools and rapids, all the way to the railway bridge & dam and sum slap (waterfall) about 2hrs walk return.

€5pax entrance fee to vintgar gorge.

we found the flight of steps by the trail turning right just before the hut & opposite direction from the bridge & walked down the the  slap (waterfall) sum.

fresh air, good activity, weather was not hot but still perspire so worn light.

Stroll Alongside Lake Bled Day 1 3pax Family Slovenia Holiday 15-21Sep2018

restaurant and pension mlino was just across the road from the lakeside.

so we just needed to step out “stealthily”, crossed the road & we were by the lake.

there is another pletna ferry point at this location.

the fare to bled island is €14pax. this location is much nearer to blef island & the journey probably takes 10mins, whereas the pletna boat at our grand hotel toplice takes like 35mins.

anyhow we wanted to hike up ostrica & to go to vintgar gorge afterwards, so we deferred to visit to bled island to the next day.

the swan are used to people here, so quite unperturbed by my presence. 🙂

we strolled along the lakeside in the direction of ostrica trail head and enjoyed the calm & peaceful spirit of lake bled & the glorious views of bled island from different vantage points.

there were many people fishing along the lakeside.

they anchored 2 metal supports into the earth. cast the fishing line & rested it on the supports with some locking mechanism. looked sturdy enough. 🙂

the short walk brought us to the trail head for ostrica hike, which was just across the road from the lakeside path.

son happily chilling out with his cold erdinger beer €4.50.

my mineral water was €2.30 & wife other beer like €3.50.

after that i basically turned to drinking bitter lemon at the same price as water. lol! 🙂

bread basket was hearty. good for the hungry.

they don’t bring olive oil & balsamic as a practice, so had to ask, and they always bring it, no issue.

the €15.70 mixed grill (top photo) was good enough.

chicken was good, sausage & the minced meat roll were good. pork was ok, beef was tough.

the fish and chips came in an unusual preparation. but it was good.

the batter came with almond flakes, the dry type not fluffy batter.

bled is supposedly an expensive place, so i guess price was ok.

i think we gave a small tip, so probably paid €45.

after lunch we kind of sneaked out of the restaurant & walked to the lakeside, and then to ostrica trailhead & hiked up to ostrica view point.

not that we mind paying €10 for carpark like at camping bled, but it was quite bothersome to go find parking again & the walk from the parking to the trailhead likely further.

so sneak was the best policy in teh circumstances. :-p

Serene Tranquil Lake Bled – Day 1 3pax Family Holiday in Slovenia 15-21Sep2018

we parked our avis rental car at our hotel parking lots. great weather & sunshine on 15.9.2018. ^^

rooms were not ready. actually it was not checking in time yet & they asked if we like to pay €30 to get the room. we didn’t need that (unusual in my experience, usually they give it to you free when available at time of check in, though if you prebook early check in it is usual to pay).

the room came with an 1 hr free row boat so we left our luggages & hopped onto one to row to bled island, or so we thought! lol! 🙂

but price was exorbitant, service was extremely poor or non existent, and rooms were in poor condition, very run down, not worth 1/2 the price!

son was quite spent after scaling mt fuji with gf 2-3 days back. PLUS we were not in the best attire after 15hrs flight inc transit & jetlag. 🙂

son rowed past the cottage by the lake, maybe a bit past the 1/2 way mark or at most 2/3 way to bled island. took 25mins.

son didn’t relish the idea of me rowing back from bled island. so we decided just to relax & enjoyed the lake & the boat on the water. 🙂

we saw pletna boats ferring passengers. they came from a ferry point next to our hotel. it took the professional botman 35mins to get to bled island. he had 20 passengers of course.

son & i decided to row back together, one oar each. it was a lot faster & less than 1/2 the effort i think.

still early to check in so we decided to go hike up to ostrica the well acknowledged best veiw of bled island & sunrise. 🙂

we decided to drive to camping bled instead of walking along the scenic lakeside.

we found camping bled but was guided to a free parking area at the train station in the hill.

it didn’t make much sense after we parked our car & walked a short stretch to return to the trailhead we missed earlier.

so we decided to drive back, find a place to have lunch & parked our car nearer to the trailhead. this a good decision. 🙂

wife did all the trip planning and booking of flights & hotel/airbnb. i picked the avis rental car which son would be driving & read up a bit to be in the know.

& we were all ready for our hiking adventure. the turkish airline flight to ljubljana had a 1hrs 50mins layover at istanbul airport. changi departure was and arrival at ljubljana was .

food quality at asia treasure had been deteriorating. for our recent trip to croatia in apr2018, the food at asia treasure T3 was pathetic even c/w SATS lounge opoosite.

this time our turkish airline gate at T1 was nearer to T2 so we took the shuttle to asia treasure T2 lounge.

the only consistent good dish at asia treasure is the lie tong (top photo). it was very good, very sweet & tasty.

the transit mall at istanbul was huge. the airport is sprawling & took long time to walk from one side to the other.

we did some shopping. wife bought chocolates & also 2 bottles of red wine.

we found one of our nice luggage completely broken on arrival at ljubljana.

there was no queue & we could easily lodged at report at the counter next to the luggage belts.

guy was fluent in english, efficient & helpful, so filing report for insurance claim later was quite a breeze, no hassle.

quite new skoda octavia 5000km

we booked a mercedes B180 for 6days for €242. avis website said or equivalent, and i checked avis ljubljana they did not have a mercedes B180 in their car inventory.

we got the skoda octavia “equivalent” instead! lol! ^^

car was relatively new 5000km (assuming it was correct). the suspension sounded like car was falling apart though. 🙂

anyway i checked B180 length <4.4m & octavia length 4.68m so maybe octavia was good for us. 🙂

we expected to pay a lot more for excess waiver. it was €20/day for additional €120 making the 6 days rental fully covered €362..quite ok atcually c/w what we paid in croatia.

got a free garmin GPS

also the guy threw in a free garmin GPS & a second driver, and those 2 could add up to like €15/day so not too bad la…

highway pass decal

got decal highway pass (we asked to confirm). seems that some rental don’t provide that, and you may get fined €50 if you didn’t know it was required.

good roads not difficult to drive even on the wrong side

and we were on the way, to lake bled.

like several reviewers said, the roads were good & not difficult for my son to drive, albeit on the wrong side…hahaha!

WT bought 7pax lunch at gayatri race course road today on 6.10.2018. ^^

don’t do indian often these days so looking forward to lunch.

S$27 fish head curry medium

fish head curry was very good.

fish was fresh, sweet, meaty. curry was flavourful.

enjoyed this fish head curry. as i shared with J though, i used to like indian fish curry a lot. these days i prefer the forture thai style fish head curry especially, and also nonya or assam fish head curry.

S$6.50 quail eggs masala

quail egg was ordinary, nothing special or distinctive with the masala.

S$22 prawn masala

likewise the prawn masala nothing special.

actually my own prawn masala & fish masala using house brand pre-made spice sachets were far better (i did an all indian dishes 10pax dinner for my friends on 19.7.2017).

S$8.50 mutton vindaloo

the mutton vindaloo was good.

mutton was tender & flavourful & curry was tasty.

tandoori chicken a dish i don’t particularly favour, though some tandoori chicken can be very flavourful & even a bit moist.

not this one, which was the usual dry & average taste.

the tahu was good.

& i like the gobi, deep-fried and differently prepared from the north indian aloo gobi. still i like this.

naan was good here.

J and i were sharing that the there were not much curry gravy from the southern indian dishes to eat with the naan, like her experience in london indian restaurant bombay bustle recently…

Yummy Japanese Chashu over Rice on 4Oct2018

made some jap chashu & pork soft bones for 6pax dinner with OPS bro & friends on 3.10.2018. 

but haha! i forgot to serve them. luckily got WM to tapao the soft bones & 1/2 the chashu back. lol! 🙂

i got like 2/5 the chashu strip in the chiller so decided to slice and steam over white rice in the rice cooker (after rice cooked). added some crispy chilli. lazy to do sushi rice so not quite donburi haha! 🙂

S$48 chilled angel hair

GY’s close buddy 闺蜜 PY is in town for 2 weeks.

i had them over to my place for homecooked chinese dinner last evening. 

so for today we go italian & I arranged 6pax lunch @ rosso bianco today on 4.10.2018. ^^

WM fetched me & we went in 1 car.

last time i came was exactly 1 month ago with my family, dinner also 6pax on 3.9.2018. ^^

I ordered 3 pasta 3 meat dishes to share..then added a chilled angel hair

complimentary garlic bread

the complimentary garlic bread came with a tasty pesto dip – extra virgin olive oil, basil, baby spinach, pine nuts. very tasty.

S$28.90 truffle foldover pizza

the foldover pizza was quite unique. all my friends liked it.

very tasty dough with rockets, prosciutto, cheese & of course truffle butter.

S$25.80 squidink spaghetti

couple friends were sort of new to squid ink. they all liked the special flavour.

i just returned from a 1+ week family holiday at amalfi coast. singapore has good standard italian food, so i don’t really think that food in italy was better, but pasta there in general more al dente than singapore. taste wise for me singapore just as good. i will do my own pasta & risotto more al dente. i think that way they taste better.

GY wanted to try risotto. she had pasta before but not risotto.

the seafood tomato sauce was quite tasty. it was a nice risotto though i always prefer pasta.

S$48 chilled angel hair

the filipino lady server earlier suggested their signature S$48 chilled angel hair. i decided to add to our orders.

it came with hotate (scallop) & the usual caviar & truffle.

it was competent, hotate was very sweet & fresh, and truffle & caviar always deliver a very delicious dish. it was not special though as many restaurants serve this & S$48 not cheap though it was a large portion i guess up to 2 times the normal serving, so i guess ok.

S$39 iberico pork rack

the iberico was ok. restaurant said best served well done. i still think for iberico it can be slightly pink.

anyway it was a bit dry & no comparison with the iberico pork rack at foc (here you can see form the photo it was served slightly pink) heaven & earth really!

S$42.80 lamb chop

my friends were unanimous that the S$42.80 lamb chop was best!

3 very meaty lamb chops, with excellent sides of grilled veg & potatoes. very tasty & flavourful * excellent texture.

S$36.80 osobucco

we were all too full for the osobucco.

actually we could do w/o it.

i wanted my friends to try the 3 meats but they did not have the chargrilled ribeye today, and i have not tried the osobucco here so i ordered it.

osobucco is a very tasty dish so this one here was just average, tender enough but not tasty enough.

3mains – lamb chop, iberico pork ribs, osobucco

S$12.80 lava cake

we also ordered a S$12.80 lava cake to share, which everybody enjoyed. good standard. the chocolate was very tasty. 🙂

6pax lunch came yo S$287. I bought & redeemed S$300 chope off peak vouchers at 50% discounts so paid S$150. really good deal.

there was a bit of drama when settling the bill, so i should say a few words on the service & attitude.

The filipino lady server competent & friendly..

The head waiter & other male server were ok until I redeemed the vouchers..we had some problems as my phone was out of battery but i knew that already so whatsapped the QR code & number to my friends..& the redemption terms said either print out or show restaurant the QR code but they couldn’t do it.

but worse they showed unfriendly, unco-operative & rather unhelpful & dismissive attitude like couldn’t be bothered with you..luckily old men also couldn’t be bothered with them so we spent a long time figuring out & they wasted their time waiting..anyhow they reluctantly let me charged my phone & i was able to redeem using my phone.

the point here is if you want to do chope promotions & bring customers to your restaurant, then it is quite counter-productive to be unnice to your customers. it’s like spending the effort, giving deep discounts yet stepping yourself on the foot, very unwise la…

OPS Bros and Friends 6pax Dinner on 3Oct2018

GY’s close buddy 闺蜜 PY is in town for 2 weeks.

PY bought us dinners at 荣 expensive ala carte buffet and at 海底捞 when WM & I visited shanghai in nov2017. 🙂

this time i was away on family holiday for 2 weeks+ in sep, so arranged to have one dinner at my house & one outside with OPs bros, GY & PF.

for this evening, i made 6 dishes for 6pax home dinner on 3.10.2018. ^^

1 腊味煲仔饭 sausage claypot rice
2 剁椒红鲷鱼头 steamed red snapper head with chopped chilli & garlic
3 nonya sauce steamed red snapper head 
4 醉鸡 drunken chicken
5 口水鸡 saliva chicken
6 prawn tofu
7 fried long beans

actually i made 2 other dishes = japanese chashu & a chashu method braised soft bones. but haha! i forgot to serve them. luckily got WM to tapao the soft bones & 1/2 the chashu back. lol! 🙂

腊味煲仔饭 sausage claypot rice

claypost rice my usual, very flavourful, rice texture & moisture just right.

only adjustment was since i not adding chicken to the claypot rice, to make the rice more tasty other than having the flavourful sausage, i used intense chicken stock boiled from chicken bones & a bit more of salted fish. i did not add salt.

i cooked 2 cups for 6pax. it was enough. we all don’t take too much carbs.

口水鸡和 醉鸡 saliva chicken & drunken chicken

both the 口水鸡和 醉鸡 saliva chicken & drunken chicken were very tasty & texture of the kampung chicken excellent. my friend finished the drunken chicken & only 2 wingstick of the saliva chicken left so they were well received.

GY doesn’t like singapore chicken rice chicken much as it was (genuinely) soft & tasteless w/o the ginger & ginger scallion sauce, so i was deciding whether to make salt baked chicken 盐焗鸡。

anyhow i decided to make 1/2 口水鸡saliva chicken & 1/2drunken chicken 醉鸡 so i used the chicken rice poached method & added the sauce.

WM thought the wine was too strong tasting. GY preferred the drunken chicken to be stronger wine tasting & saltier otherwise it was ok. 🙂

steamed red snapper head with chilli & garlic 剁椒鱼头

WT caught a 3.5kg/4kg red snapper 1 month ago, and chopped into 3 portions for me.

we were finding an occasion to have a fishy dinner 全鱼宴.

couldn’t really do that with just 6pax so i cooked only the fish head…still a big problem for me to chope the fishe head in 1/2.

the steamed red snapper head with chilli & garlic 剁椒鱼头 was quite competent, so they all liked it. its the smaller 1/2 so i steamed for 10mins. meat texture quite perfect & basically it was the top quality light soy sauce that did the trick, bring out great flavours.

the nonya steamed red snapper head 娘惹红雕鱼头 was even better tasting with the tangy sauce, and something new for PF.

my friends finished most of the 2 fish heads.

prawn tofu

the prawn tofu was ok. i have done better.

today the fried tofu not that good, not done well. otherwise it was ok and the dish was cleared out.

fried long beans

my fried long beans didn’t look great. but taste was pretty good, with oyster sauce and a bit of mala chilli. the dish all finished too.

腊味煲仔饭 sausage claypot rice

for the preparations, i fried chicken fat & ginger, off fire & added 3tsp chopped garlic and 2 slices of salted fish & fried in the residual heat.

then added 2 cups rice, 5 thick chinese mushrooms quarterred, fried & added 2 cups intense chicken stock & set aside.

& time it to cook about 20-25mins ready for dinner at 7pm.

poached kampung chicken

i salted the kampung chicken overnight in fridge.

first time i did poached chicken method for kampung chicken 1.1kg (usually 1.4kg-1.6kg battery chicken).

so i reduced 12 minutes boiling to 9mins & poached in the boiled wtaer for 20mins instead of 25mins.

then plunged in ice bath.

the poached chicken came out quite perfect. 🙂

for the saliva chicken, i added 2tbsp mala chilli sauce, 1 tbsp fish sauce, 1tbsp sesame oil, 2tsp sugar and tasted. it was quite perfect. i added to the 1/2 debone chicken & covered with clingwrap in fridge.

for drunken chicken i added 1/2 cup hua diao jiu, 1 cup chicken stock, 1.5 tbsp fish sauce & 1tsp sugar.

2 fish head dishes

the fish heads were the usual – basically 2-3 tbsp light soy sauce, 2 tbsp mirin, 2tbsp olive oil.

and for the nonya style, 2 tbsp gimson nonya sauce.

today fried tofu not good.

had to change non stick pan a my usual one losing non stick property…texture of tofu not ideal after frying twice.

chicken stock & gravy was ok. so taste was ok.

i did the long beans a bit earlier as i did not want to rush when guest were here.

but it became a bit old (earlier photo) when i reheat. luckily taste was ok.

6 dishes for 6pax dinner

was a fun dinner entertaining good friends & spending a wonderful evening together.

WT brought a very sweet pomelo from SKC. we had that & did a bit of karaoke in the room after dinner.

i ordered 6 dimsum dishes 9 plates & WT ordered the cooked dishes. 🙂

har gao

dimsum here substantially cheaper than most places at S$3.60.

standard quite below par. i would not order dimsum here.

har gao was mediocre variety, skin gluey & prawns not the very fresh & tasty ones.

xiaolongbao 小笼包

xiaolongbao 小笼包 quite poor, soup & meat not very sweet & tasty.

chives dumpling 

chives dumpling ok i guess, basically so so.

char siew cheong fun 

cheong fun very remote from hong kong standard of very smooth cheong fun with tasty sauce.

steamed chicken feet

steamed chicken feet was quite mediocre for me.  i felt it was not the very tasty ones i took at other restaurants. my friends liked it though.

steamed pork ribs only dish that was good for me taste wise.

but more bones. some other places gave more meaty pork ribs…

S$25 mixed braised plate 卤味拼盘

the S$25 mixed braised plate 卤味拼盘 was quite good standard.

the lor 卤 was flavourful & the big intestines, belly pork & pig stomach texture were good.

duck texture were good too maybe a little gamey.

anyway i liked this dish.

there was a dead bee stuck to the duck slices when we removed the coriander. anyway the restaurant replaced with a new platter after we informed them.

the service overall quite good & friendly (the young guy from ipoh took good photos for us too).

S$12 pig trotters jelly

the pig trotters jelly looked ok but was for me below par, basically like those we bought at chinatown 30yrs back that were mostly jelly which melt away.

this means there was not enough gelatine so the jelly tasted of more soy sauce than flavourful gelatine.

my own pig skin jelly was much better much tastier. anyway according to my own preference la.

S$12 oyster omelette

the oyster omelette was really a large serving with lots of oysters for S$12.

i think though oysters were frozen ones, not fresh & plump, and the overall dish was average not great.

but then a place like bee hiang can serve you about the same standard oyster omelette (crispy style) at double the cost.

so i guess this was ok if we not too picky.

S$22 duck web with scallops

the S$22 duck web with scallops & nai bai a very good dish, tasty & quite good value.

gravy was great, and the duck webs & nai bai vegetabkes quite good too. & so the scallops.

S$8 fried kailan

the S$8 fried kailan also very good dish. good standard, in fact better than some places that charged double like S$16.

S$25 mixed braised plate 卤味拼盘

for me, the duck web dish was the best & the mixed braise platter was pretty good.

the price for 6pax including 9 plates of dimsum & 5 dishes was S$122.

i think if order the right dishes, it’s quite ok place to some, so i may bring my sis & bil here, and maybe sanlanjie…maybe try their fish head steamboat…see how..

Ah Hengs Curry Chicken Noodles and J Homemade Prawn Noodles on 1Oct2018

just returned last evening from a very fun & memorable family holiday at amalfi coast (22-29.9.2018). ^^

thought of having curry chicken noodles at ah heng at hong lim, so messaged bros LKY & WM. WM first to respond so we arranged to meet 10.45am at ah heng on 1.10.2018.^^

some days i do have cravings i would drive myself to ah heng on my own…today didn’t really have cravings to that extent…since WM was available we just meet & eat la.. lol! ^^

i reached a bit late 10.55am. there were like 5pax in the queue before me so just 10mins wait.

i ordered my usual large S$6.50 thich beehoon mee & chicken thigh 鸡尾

today the gravy was par excellence! there were couple times i came early 1030-11am ish & felt the gravy was less intense than normal.

today it was perfect! a thoroughly satisfying bowl of delectable goodness…i can have this again!

we had some nice starters=cherry tomatoes with dried orange skin, the finest jamón ibérico de bellota (acorn) with very sweet melon, and centry egg on tofu. 🙂

J prawn pork ribs noodles

J prawn noodles one of the best. the last time i had 2 large bowls on 20.1.2018. ^^

today the beehoon mee was overdone a notch, and the soup was kind of less intense. maybe would be better if soup was reduced a bit to make it more intense.

WM had cut fruits & WT brought very sweet cut pineapples from SKC.

after dinner WM J GY & PF played shanghai majong…WT HC & I watched TV. i was getting sleepy from jetlag so i left early about 930pm.
