my friend pointed out the space in front of 大中国 tai chong kok in sago lane.

his dad used to run a stall there selling 烧腊char siew, siew yoke & roast duck. 🙂

pricing quite ok i guess, more ex than hawker stalls but equal or cheaper than food courts.

fishball noodles dry

there was 2 fishballs. 1 meatball, minced pork, some fish cake. you add your own la pok (deep-fried lard cubes), spring onions, birdeye chilli etc.

a friend on facebook commented it looked so good. unfortunately it was ok but not that good. chilli had no kick (better after adding some birdeye chilli), not enuf vinegar i think. noodles was qq, and la pok was flavourful if slightly soft (lau hong).

it was passable la & at S$4 better than many at food courts.

but for good tecochew fishball noodles, i point my friend to jalan tua kong meepok at 6th avenue.

for good mushroom sauce bakchormee to ming fa @ upper thomson

& for a very good bakchormee that also lacking kick in chilli & vinegar but very tasty, ah hoe mee pok.

Liking it more & more @ Ah Hoe Mee Pok on 3Feb2016

ah hoe meepok wed 11.15am

did my usual 10km run with my good friend at ulu pandan jogging track at faber heights this morning on 3.2.2016. ^^

after water, 100plus & coffee chat, was on the way home nearing 11am & decided to pop in at ah hoe mee pok.

i have tried the japanese father-daughter stall at blk 710 2 times already.

wanted to try the brother’s stall at blk 713. however they only open at 11.30am & i was at the stall at 11.07am.

back to blk 710 then! i like the meepok but i am not really into queueing or waiting for long periods unless with good friends/fellowship.

there was only 1 guy in front of me at blk 710 at 11.15am on a wed. suited me fine. 🙂

S$5 ah hoe bakchormee

S$5 ah hoe meepok

they had the teochew prawn version instead of mushroom sauce. i am a sticker of what i know. maybe wait for friends to tell me what that version taste like. so it’s the usual mushroom sauce “tai hwa”  bakchormee for me.

“gonelohmee” aka dried tossed noodles

my helper made a super “gonelohmee” aka dried tossed noodles for dinner this evening on 6.11.2015. ^^

wife taught her how to make this, & we have this pretty often.

i have not done this myself before, so this post does not qualify as a recipe post. 🙂

"gonelohmee" ingredients

ingredients are straight forward. so is preparation i think.

the key would be the right mix of chilli sauce. that i do not know yet. but when i want to try it, i will experiment a bit.

Meepok Tar @ Jalan Tua Kong Ah Lim at Bedok Simpang on 13Sep2015

jalan tua kong ah lim's S$5 meepok tar

jalan tua kong ah lim’s S$5 meepok tar

went to a friend’s place to watch us open tennis finals between djokovic & federer.

finals was rain-delayed from 4am to 7am on 13.9.2015.

another friend joined at 6.30am & 4 of us decided to go for breakfast.

our first choice, the soupy Xing Ji (興记) Bakchormee at Fengshan Food Centre, was not yet opened so we drove over to bedok simpang & luckily jalan tua kong ah lim at bedok road has just opened.

jalan tua kong ah lim's S$5 meepok tar

jalan tua kong ah lim’s S$5 meepok tar

we ordered a S$5 meepok tar each + coffee.

jalan tua kong ah lim's S$5 meepok tar

jalan tua kong ah lim’s S$5 meepok tar

this a good standard meepok tar. noodles was excellent QQ, fishballs were sweet & bouncy, chilli was good & spicy with the oomph, and there were 2 fishballs, 1 crispy dumplin, fishcakes and lots of minced pork.

flavour was good, but it was quite a bit salty. i did not finished some of the mince pork which were swimming in the quite salty chilli sauce at the bottom of the bowl.

jalan tua kong ah lim's S$5 meepok tar

jalan tua kong ah lim’s S$5 meepok tar

in comparison, their neighbour jalan tua kong lau lim (only open at 7am), & also jalan tua kong at 6th avenue, were both better.

if only it was less salty, this meepok tar would have been excellent.

capellini, minced pork sauce, sakura ebi

wife was away skiing in hokkaido. SKI=Spending Kid’s Inheritance.^^

eldest daughter organised a 3pax family dinner at saver @ purvis on 1.3.2015. 🙂

we had very good family dinner recently at concetto (another saver restaurant) on 18.1.2015.

& this place was just as fun.

the next day i came with my godsis & a good friend’s daughter for the set lunch at S$22.90, & it was just as good. the set lunch menu here is more attractive than that at concetto, which really had very limited choice (they really should review that!).

the restuarant had 2 adjacent dining area. this one was absolutely packed. we were not able to get sitting at the other side where the sitting was more spacious even though we booked beforehand. i booked the next day lunch, making sure i could get the other, but that turned out to be unnecessary as we were the only table. what a difference lunch & dinner!

Best Bakchormee @ Changi Airport T3 B2 Kopitiam on 2Jan2015

bakchormee @ changi airport T3 basement B2

bakchormee @ changi airport T3 basement B2

sent son to airport on 2.1.2015. he was back for 2 weeks short winter leave. 🙂

after checking in, i had also parked my car, there was a short time before immigration & boarding.

we went down to T3 basement 2 kopitiam food court & ordered a bakchormee at the lai heng fishball noodle stall.

for me, this is 1 of the best bakchormee. we had this many times before & it had always been good, no exception this time.

this the tai hwa crawford-style with mushroom sauce & lots of vinegar. it was very good, like as good as tai hwa’s. tasty, vinegar just right, good ingredients – liver & all. very satisfied.

it is different from the jalan tua kong meepok tar at 6th avenue, jalan tua kong lau lim @ bedok simpang, 132 marine terrace fishball noodles, but similar to ming fa @ upper thomson though that one has less vinegar.

our bikes

went cycling with wife at east coast park on 19.11.2014. 🙂

i bought my dahon mu n360 on 3.4.2014. it is a good bike & i quite enjoy riding it.

it was pouring in the morning the day before. fortunately it did not rain today. we started only at 9am, so it was a bit hot actually.

we took ECP exit 10A & parked at the first carpark nearest still road.

from there we cycled past east coast seafood centre, ski360degrees cable ski park, east coast lagoon food centre.

1452326_10152835862919494_8435370596337737564_n 1669923_10152835862969494_4489019953487081649_o 10402761_10152835863024494_7486745453540882211_n

& up to changi coast walk. we took some rest & water along the way & back, so the pace was rather slow. we cycled 22km in total time of 1hr 32mins.

this was a shorter ride than last time when we went all the way to changi village food centre (35km return) but quite disappointed with the makan there.

our bikes

our bikes

there were not so many people & bikers at this time, very smooth, peaceful & relaxing ride.

after cycling we proceeded to relish serangoon gardens to use up an expiring groupon. however, relish was closed for a private function so we went to serangoon gardens food centre & took the totally forgettable seng kee (胜记) bakchormee.

Seng Kee (胜记) Bakchormee @ Serangoon Garden Food Centre

after cycling at east coast park, we went to serangoon gardens to use a groupon voucher at relish, but relish was closed for private function, so we wandered to serangoon gardens food centre on 19.11.2014. 🙂

i recalled some friends were talking on whatsapp about bakchormee here, the stall where the guy used to clank his wares (no longer since he moved here).

there were 3 bakchomee stalls, but i managed to confirm with my friends that it was seng kee (胜记) bakchormee. actually the many messages & feedback were quite negative, especially regards the S$9 fish maw soup, but since we had not tried before, we decided to go for bakchormee rather than other food. 🙂

Seng Kee (胜记) Bakchormee @ Serangoon Garden Food Centre

there was no queue at 12pm on a wednesday & i was bale to pick up my 2 bowls of S$4 bakchormee immediately (i was not going to take the S$9 fish maw soup after those feedback). after me though there was a queue of about 4 to 5, and the only one of the 3 stalls to have a queue.

that should have been promising, however the results were very disappointing. i would say the bakchormee was totally mediocre, can probably get better from any coffeeshop or hawker centre.

for us, the main failure was the chilli. i went to ask for more chilli. chilli looked potent but it had no taste no kick. my wife’s mee kia (thin noodles) was still qq, my meepok was becoming soggy.

the ingredients were quite good, with teepor (dried flatfish/sole) & her kilo (fish dumplings), mushroom sauce, liver, lean meat etc.

the soup also looked promising, but the taste was again disappointing, whereas the soup at 6th avenue jalan tua kong meepok tar was so tasty.

anyway, the whole experience was just “no shiok”. no comparison with 6th avenue jalan tua kong meepok tar or for that matter sunny fishball noodles also at 6th avenue, jalan tua kong lau lim meepok tar in bedoktai hwa bakchormee at crawford lane, ming fa upper thomson etc.

i had ice kachang & my wife took the soursop jelly. ice kachang was not to my taste (i like it sweet with more syrup & evaporated milk like at adam road food centre). the soup sop was good but the jelly was not the soft type.

Tai Hwa Bakchormee at Blk 466 Crawford Lane on 23Oct2014

tai hwa bakchormee at blk 466 crawford lane

S$5 tai hwa bakchormee at blk 466 crawford lane

went to immigration checkpoint authority (ICA) to take passport size photo today.

i applied online for passport extension but my scanned photo for e-submission was rejected.  anyway it’s about time i took some current day photos. heard from b-i-l that the studios outside now charged S$22 for 8 (or maybe 12) photos, and better off for me just to go to ICA & pay S$5.50 for 4 photos. that’s what i did, and no hassle.

was planning to skip lunch as i have a kaiseki dinner at GOTO this evening. but since i already parked, and i have not been to this stall for the last maybe 10years and the time 11am looked promising, i decided to walk over to tai hwa bakchormee @ blk 466 crawford lane. this the original stall from hill street 1932.

tai hwa bakchormee at blk 466 crawford lane

a very pleasant surprise. the stall proprietor was very polite & friendly, not the usual nazi chef! 🙂

well, the  S$5 tai hwa bakchormee was good. 🙂

noodles were qq (al dente) and tasty mixed in the sauce. ingredients minced pork, pork balls, pig liver, soi kao (fish/meat dumpling) & tipoh were good. i thought this style bakchormee had mushroom sauce, but there was none, just the very nice vinegar, chilli sauce taste. very good. overall i think i like the bakchormee at ming fa bakchormee upper thomson a bit better. close fight anyway.

but after all these time, i think i now prefer the S$4 jalan tua kong meepok tar at 6th avenue. & don’t think i will wait 1/2 for this tai hwa bakchormee.

Nasi Lemak Truly Sucks @ Changi Village Food Centre on 21Sep2014

top drinks & dessert

top drinks & dessert

we biked 35km from east coast lagoon to changi village food centre & back early morning on 21.9.2014.

so wanted to try out the hawker food at changi village food centre. turned out to be a huge disappointment.

amigo bakchomee

amigo bakchomee

amigo bakchomee

amigo bakchormee

my wife went first to get her food & came back with bakchormee some 15mins later. she bought from the stall with the longest queue “amigo”.

this amigo bakchormee was really mediocre, which really meant it was quite poor by comparison, far below the standard of 6th avenue jalan tua kong, lau lim @ bedok simpang, ming fa @ upper thomson etc. even the other stall sunny meepok tar at 6th avenue was better. the noodles were not QQ, and the chilli & flavours were what can i say, mediocre! 😦

mizzy corner nasi lemak

there were 4 nasi lemak stalls. i decided not to queue at “mizzy corner” the one with longest queue. but my short queue (i was the 4th in the queue) at malay stall sri sujana turned out quite long as 2 before were buying 4packets & 5packets. the man was very naggy at every customer. service was poor & not cheerful. 😦

that would be ok if food was ok, but it was not! rice was poor and did not have the fragrant coconut flavours. & sambal chilli the most important ingredient was outright bad & odd tasting. it was salty & like having tau jeoh??? not sure can call it sambal?? to me rice & chilli were like the backbone of good nasi lemak, & both failed completely. 😦

otah was bad, the chicken was quite ok to good, the ikan kuning was ok. this was really poor c/w both stalls no.1 & no.2 nasi lemak at adam road food centre.

i will never eat from this stall again.

not sure if we would eat anything the next time we cycle here, probably just have ice kacang & soursop.

Xing Ji (興记) Bakchormee at Fengshan Food Centre on 13Jul2014

xing ji (興记) bakchormee

xing ji (興记) bakchormee

a lot of late nights & day zombies lately. 🙂

went to a friend’s place to watch the germany – argentina world cup finals at 3am 14.7.2014. we arranged to meet at 10.30pm for supper then back to friend’s place to watch a movie. that would bring us nicely to 3am to watch the WC finals. 🙂

i supported argentina though it was an uphill task. both sides had good chances, however argentina lacked good finishers. messi was heavily marked & mostly in midfield with several lightning dashes down the right flanks but there was no centre forwards to receive his crosses & pullbacks – angela di maria was injured, aquero was not game fit & missing his speed & touches, gondola higuain missed a sitter & badly fluffed a superb lavazzi’s cross with an offside goal! & manual neuer the german goalkeeper smothered palacio’s once chance. anyway, in the end i guess the best team won! 🙂

before the WC finals we watched zero dark thirty, a multiple award winning film (oscar, bafta, golden globe etc) about the hit on osama bin laden. it was a good movie but for me it was not among the best & it was also hard to follow (need to read up first to understand the movie).

for supper, we had the famous xingji soupy bakchormee, see video here.

we also had the ngoh hiang & orh luah.

the ngoh hiang was a disappointment! 😦 sausage was poor & ngoh hiang not tasty.

likewise the orh luah was poor, much worse than the orh luah at east coast lagoon food village.

this time we tried the supposedly famours pig trotters at han jia bakuteh & pork leg. i wanted bakchormee so i skipped the rice & just had the trotters. according to my friend, this stall was quite good except that it was less good in the evening as the trotters got to be too soft.

braised pig trotters, taupok, chai buay

braised pig trotters, taupok, chai buay

my bakchormee was ok but not of the standard of tai wah bakchormee, jalan tua kong lau lim at bedok simpangjalan tua kong meepok tar at 6th avenue etc.

my 2 other friends ordered also taupok, chai buay + peanuts & kidney, liver soup. all were ok except the pig trotters. partly because  we ordered the lean trotters, but this was way below the standard of any good trotters stall like ng ah sio bakuteh, song fa bakuteh etc.

i had tried several stalls here after 4 visits including laksa, orh luah, satay, beef noodles, bbq chicken & now the pig trotters. except for the bbq chicken wings & orh luah which were good, i have to say that this food centre is way below par c/w with say maxwell road hawker centre, amoy street hawker centre, hong lim hawker centre & bukit timah food centre.

after dinner we enjoyed the top drawer sound system & music, this time jason mraz, & the wimbledon semis & world cup quarterfinals between france & germany. we left about 2am, skipping the brazil-columbia game. 🙂

ming fa (明发) bakchormee

did some errands at hollandv. walking through the food centre & thought the bakchormee stall looked different. i had a good bakchormee at a commonwealth crescent fai zai eatery bakchormee here on 24.9.2013. now the stall is called ming fa (明发). i guess ming fa (明发) has acquired & franchised the stall. it used to be a middle-aged man hawking, now there were 2 women.

i tried ming fa (明发) at upper thomson road couple times recently & it was 1 of the best. the branding was the same so i decided to give it a go.

ming fa (明发) bakchormee

ming fa (明发) bakchormee

ming fa (明发) bakchormee

ming fa (明发) bakchormee

must say this was really quite poor. the meepok noodles were slightly soggy not enough qq (al dente), ingredients were less. taste was just passable but not great. the previous stall commonwealth crescent fai zai eatery bakchormee was a lot better than this, though the ming fa (明发) at upper thomson was far better. but this ming fa (明发) at hollandv is quite poor indeed!

i am not sure this thus the brand any good at all!

the place was very well patronised at 3pm on a sunday afternoon. we could hardly find a table for 3.

the bakchormee was really good, the overall flavours & chilli, the qq noodles, minced pork, pork ball & sliced pork & liver. as good as the tai wah i remember (not been to tai wah for the longest time).

noodles was S$4 and ming fa now has expanded from a traditional stall in chinatown to 7 outlets with a manufacturing arm selling laksa and curry chicken etc. 🙂 saw on their website that there is an outlet at hollandv hawker centre etc. somehow did not notice. only tried the fei zai bakchormee stall, which was not too bad. will look out next time i am there. 🙂

very shook indeed!

meepok tar

meepok tar

had not eaten here for a while. the meepok tar was good. everything from fishballs, meatball, minced prok, fishcake to qq noodles & garnishings were all good. the chilli was also good.if i have to make comparison with jalan tua kong bakchormee stall, perhaps that one was a little spicier & maybe that gave more kick. cannot tell! 🙂

there are so many good meepok tar stalls around (just like chicken rice stalls etc) so it was not difficult to find a good stall & the difference maybe quite marginal.

6 bouncy fishballs

6 bouncy fishballs

went to daiso at ion orchard to pick up something on 8.10.2013. thought i would try out some stalls at food opera at B4. 🙂

i tried the bakchormee the other time i was here so decided to give the teochew fishball noodle a shot. i ordered meepok tar. its S$5, i guess they have to pay for rent so ok. the fishballs looked great & they were good & 6 of them, quite satisfying. even though i am low in carbo preference, still a good chilli noodles is what makes it shiok! otherwise might as well eat fishball soup? anyhow the noodles were much below par, just a little done which was ok still fairly qq, but made it unpalatable was the heavy mix of sweet sauce. somehow it managed to taste like yongtaufu! it was way off xin lu’s S$3 fishball noodles (former margaret drive now at mei chin food centre) and of course nothing like the jalan tua kong stall at 6th avenue. won’t do this stall again but the bakchormee stall here was ok, will try that again next time.

Jalan Tua Kong Meepok Tar @ 6th Avenue on 12Sep2013

teochew meepok tar - S$3.50

teochew meepok tar – S$3.50

decided to stop by good good coffeeshop at 6th avenue for the jalan tua kong teochew meepok tar today on 12.9.2013. i don’t take this so much these days, but had a nice teochew fish ball noodles at mei chin road last week with son, & this stall was nearer & i like meepok tar more than fish ball noodles. 🙂

the stall has been at this coffeeshop for several years, apparently the owner had previously worked at 1 of the jalan tua kong stalls and now pays a fee to use the name.

i like this teochew style more than the tai wah type mushroom sauce bakchormee & fish ball noodles (though i like them all..haha). the noodle is qq with a nice bite (al dente) and not mushy. there were 2 fishballs, pork, prawn, fishcakes & minced pork, and most important the chilli & of course the fried lard (lar pok). love it! 🙂

For Old Time Sake @ Xin Lu (新路) Teochew Fishball Noodles on 3Sep2013

xin lu teochew fish ball noodles (former margaret drive)

decided to drop by xin lu (新路) teochew fish ball noodles (formerly from margaret drive) at mei chin road food centre with son after sending car for servicing on 3.9.2013.

this one of the popular stalls relocated from margaret drive (see another relocated stall why we queue? @ hai kee cha kuay teow). i had frequented a few times after they relocated, though these days i am less enamoured with this style of pure fishball noodles c/w the teochew meepok tar type or the bakchormee, both which i like.

the price was S$3 for noodles with 5 fish balls. i ordered my usual 1/2 portion noodles to reduce my carbo intake haha (but made sure i had the same amount of chilli) & they gave me 1 more fish ball. whatever!

for me the noodles were just as good as before, qq, & the fish balls were excellent – bouncy & “shouk shouk”! i love the chilli & to go back to old times pouring the soup into the chilli after eating the noodles. it’s just that i don’t take this much nowadays and my preference is anyway for meepok tar or bakchormee. will be back after a while. 🙂
