went with wife to mosque street for some meeting at 5.30pm on 10jan2018.

after meeting, we decided to go to ah yat abalone forum at victoria street at hotel grand pacific for 2pax dinner.

prices had go up quite a bit since last time.

lobster is now S$35, instead of S$29.80 in dec2017, just couple weeks back! likewise tiger garoupa is now S$48/kg instead of S$38/kg previously.

we ordered the garlic steamed razor clams, one each…no change in prices still S$5.50 a piece. 🙂

this a new flavour we like..they don’t do pumpkin flavour here like ah yat grandstand, but this butter lime sauce very good la…

we looked at the menu..to order a crab tanhoon dish was like S$70, and a prawn tanhoon dish like S$50+…

so in the end it’s still the S$35 lobster that is the best deal.

Good S$9.80 Kaisen Mountan Mori @ Sabar Japan Food Town Wisma L4 on 10Jan2018

went with sis & bil to sabar at japan food town, wisma atria L4 this morning for early lunch on 10.1.2018. ^^

sabar was having a promotion kaisen mountain mori at S$9.80. it came with complimentary tea..i also got a pair of free saba sushi from jpassport. it was too difficult for me to do it for my sis & bil so i just let them have the pair of saba sushi.

the kaisen mountain mori itself was pretty good deal at S$9.80.

of course there was no premium cuts, but the magura, salmon, saba cuts were all fresh & sweet, and the amount was substantial, no gimic!

i think this donburi can go for like S$16.90..

we all enjoyed it. i would do this again if i am around here..

youngest daughter arranged to go queensway shopping centre to buy a pair of asics running shoes for me for my birthday earlier.

we decided to have early dinner nearby at HK street old chun kee on 9.1.2018. ^^

i actually prefer hk street chun kee 香港街珍记 at the commonwealth crescent food centre. that is my favourite song fish head 松鱼头 stall. but it was closed.

so i was very pleasantly surprised that the song fish head 松鱼头  this evening was really very good. fish head of course is fresh & sweet. the sauce was incredible! tangy, tasty, love it!

i think they must changed chef!

like that i would come back again for sure.

Friend Bought 6pax Dinner for January Birthday Boys @ Heavenly Divine on 5Jan2018

this evening, my RI friend bought 6pax dinner for the january birthday boys (he is one himself) at heavenly divine on 5.1.2018.

2 friends shared the same birthday. one was unable to attend today as he was just returning from HCMC with his family this evening.

heavenly divine is at boat quay, the second row of shophouses when you walked from UOB plaza 1. boat quay eats have great ambience, riverside dining outside & renovated shophouse inside.

the crab cake was a bit salty, but otherwise a competent dish. presentation was ok.

the batter for fish & chips was somewhat unusual.

certainly not the usual batter you get in UK or australia or anywhere else. seldom take fish & chips in singapore (almost never i should say).

had a good one at old brown shoes years back, not sure it is still there.

this batter is a bit like the japanese furai (“fry”) preparation..

but result was good, nice fresh fish fillet & i like the batter. though i still like the usual fish & chips batter with lots of vinegar & salt more…not that i am hot on fish & chips..

the owner is son of the host’s friend, and co-incidentally a relative of the other birthday boy present. small world la!

on the wall, there’s many old USA carplates as decor…our friend (the restaurant owner) was living in seattle & like all americans do, drove a lot while living there. 🙂

i did not select the steak as i didn’t these places offer good cuts or great cooking for steaks..not at these prices to be fair…

i tasted the steaks. as i expected, very mediocre…bland in taste & doneness i didn’t see medium rare..but i was still harbouring a flu so my tastebuds a bit off.

the corn chips were interesting, could taste the corn flavours.

2 birthday cakes

we had a great evening, lots of fun & laughter together…old friends & many old memories & stories to reminiscent…it’s a good way too..another friend present did this dinner previously, so we can follow the tradition of january birthday dinners in subsequent years..

one thing to commend about the place..the owner very friendly, especially with friend & relative among us diners this evening…but he looks like a friendly & chill kind of bloke in any case.

the manager joshua gave really good service & very obliging. we troubled him again & again with group photos with so many cameras..i did not want to add my camera..so got some group & birthday photos from shared whatsapp photos. haha!

food wise, so so not much to comment…

the teochew char kuay teow quite ok, but nothing special. even the adam road char kuay teow is better than this. quite many customers though, and though seated i had to wait like 15mins.

she started working some months back, so this was her treat.

i had not been to sun with moon for a while.

the most recent which i blogged was when they had 30% promotion on 11.9.2016, more than a year ago!

it’s not really more expensive than many of the new joints say at orchard central or wisma japan food town…

at S$35.80 (& i had 10% member’s discounts & another 5% equivalent redeemable points), the chirashi don came with a side, a grilled salmon belly (my daughter chose a niku nabe – pork hotpot), and a coffee/drink…which would cost like $10..

maybe i would go for the cheaper bara chirashi don next time la…

a very close friend bought birthday dinner for my wife & another friend today on 23.12.2017. ^^

they arranged for 6pax dinner, 3 couples, at silk restaurant, sicc island. 🙂

several dishes i had not tried before…the cold crab was good, firm, sweet, good roe..

the chinese ham & cucumbers appetiser was good.

though these 2 starters not really up there in my list..

peking duck

the peking duck here is competent, always good, if not quite kai garden variety…

the crispy perch was among the best dishes.

crispy & light batter, sweet & tender fish , and very nice light thai sweet sauce dip…

i later returned for a dinner with my children & they all loved this crispy perch dish..

braised tofu dish

this braised tofu dish with homemade tofu, golden mushrooms & spinach was ok.

the tofu looked impressive but not well infused, so not that tasty.

on my subsequent visit with my children, we ordered this tofu with the minced meat sauce, and that was quite delightful. everyone liked it.

the complimentary second eat for the duck was a minced duck cabbage wrap.

it was pretty good, but i liked their shredded duck crispy noodles best.

this time since we had a separate noodle dish, the host arranged for the cabbage wrap.

braised prawn beehoon 鲜虾焖米粉

the last dish of prawns beehoon was quite excellent too. prawns very fresh & sweet, and beehoon well infused with the flavourful stock. the menu item is kuay teow, but the host made an excellent choice of braised beehoon.

we had a great time together, a really wonderful evening. food was good. this friend is very busy, so i meet him twice a year, once during chinese new year & the other time in recent years, when i organised a birthday dinner for him. this year, we met 3 times. ^^

xiaolongbao 小笼包 was good standard, thin skin, very sweet broth & inlaid meat, and held easily from the thicker top.

the star of the show was 五彩缤纷鸭5 colour peking duck, served with 5-colour pancake skin & 5-colour sauce.

normal price was S$88 just for the duck, and i think like S$18 for second eat. so this S$98 6-course deal which included the second eat, was really special deal.

we had a great lunch together – good food, great service & wonderful company…. WEH gave me a hug after lunch. ^^

6 of us RI bros  (JLKY, JT, YKK, NCL & me) met up at rahim muslim food at  721 Ang Mo Kio Ave 8 for mee rebus. TCH joined us later.

a queue formed up as the stall opened at 11.30am. my friends queued for quite a while actually, maybe c15mins even for a short queue.

they have this S$3 mee rebus that had been featured i news articles. top up S$1 for chicken. my friends bought 5 bowls all with chicken, S$4 each.

the bowls were topped with satay sauce, added a nutty flavour but i thought a bit sweet. some friends thought it was better w/o the sauce.

mee rebus not really my favourite, so i was not hot about the dish..

just OK! edible & good taste, not something i would come just to eat.

really shiok better than buying & cooking wagyu ourselves la! 🙂

this a place we come regularly. the last time i made a blog post on aburiya was on 3.6.2017. 🙂

we took the wagyu sashimi. very sweet. some parts have small bits of residue, but bascially a very good beef sashimi.

..didn’t eat myself..not feeling so great & didn’t want to eat..

the looked delicious..i know it is delicious! haha! the thickened sauce was just right..it’s a small fish head..so no problem for my friend 1pax to finish..

it’s an excellent main. iberico pork had good marbling & great flavours, and it was done very well, tender & moist.

so with UOB 1 for 1, 2pax lunch was just S$48++ for 4 dishes, basically each having a pasta & a main.

hard to beat that in terms of value for money & quality!

did not come here (used to be called concetto by saveur, now just saveur) for the longest time…looking back it was 23.9.2015, maybe not that long ago…haha!

we not really hungry, so decided to just have the chilled capellini each & shared a salmon confit starter. 🙂

i like the bcm & ckt too, but nothing takes the place of curry chicken noodles for me.

good as always, though i felt that perhaps coming after (say) 1.30pm the gravy is tastier than what i had at 10.30am….

quite many things happened over the period. my eldest daughter got married. i went with my OPS bro to shanghai. i did several home dinners for my RI bros & OPS buddies afterwards, and of course christmas, new year etc. and i did a few more friday community breakfast for teban gardens.

maybe i should do a new year resolution too.

my last & only new year resolution post was 1.1.2014. 🙂

well, see if inspirations beget me..

it was an excellent pasta – presentation was perfect, pretty,pasta texture was al dente, prawn was fresh & bouncy, & chorizo flavours were superb. & nice shaved parmesan cheese.

the iberian pork secreto medium well S$26 was perfect too.

secreto had good marbling, flavourful & very well done, charred ont he outside, and sauce very tasty also. server advised the recommended doneness is medium well.

i googled secreto. found that it’s a secret butcher’s cut, not too specific, could be a cut near the belly. anyway it was a very good tasting cut.

the 2oog rib eye steak was served with a tub of fries. 🙂

dinner for 4pax was about S$160, including of 1 for 1 alcoholic drinks from 4pm – 9pm. the white wine we had was very good, the whisky (fott-step in the dark) was useless, just whicky on the rocks…w/o the drinks it would have been about S$115. very good value! ^^

Great Omakase @ Hachi on 8Nov2017

#1 hotate isobe age

had another awesome A5 ohmi wagyu omakase lunch at hachi on 8.11.2017. ^^

first dish was hotate isobe age, a nori (seaweed) flavoured fritter of scallop on a bed of pumpkin puree.

scallop was good, sweet…the nori flavoured fritter also very nice.

#2 large oyster with ponzu jelly

the oyster with ponzu jelly was another really delectable dish…so nice lor!

oyster very fresh, plump & sweet, & the ponzu jelly combined perfectly. 🙂

#3 ohmi wagyu nimono 近江和牛 with taro

the ohmi wagyu 近江和牛nimono (steamed dish) was so flavourful & melt-in-the-mouth.

i think maybe i will try making this dish myself, getting a cheaper wagyu cut & sous vide or low temperature braise.

#4 sashimi moriawase – akami, kampachi, hirame

the sashimi moriawase had only akami, kampachi, hirame. all the sashimi were very good, very sweet.

but the quality of ingredients prompted me to look at past omakase lunches i had here.

looking at the photos of the sashimi moriawase on 2.2.2017 with my 3 OPS bros, the sashimi today was much inferior in quality by comparison.

likewise, then we had uni isobe age..today we had hotate isobe age…quite different la..

#5 grilled A5 ohmi wagyu steak

the grilled A5 ohmi wagyu steak was the best dish for this omakase..so flavourful, marbled, melt-in-your-mouth. ^^

it was served with some some charcoal salt, sweet potato, a white grated wasabi, momotaro tomatoes from hokkaido, crackers and a wedge of tiny dried fishes. awesome!

#6 ohmi wagyu sushi 

the 3 ohmi wagyu sushi were yopped with a ponzu minced daikon, uni & caviar, and a white foie gras dust. 🙂

i liked all 3, not surprisingly the caviar & uni one best. the white foie gras dust did not seem to add anything to the delicious wagyu sushi….

#7 soba with sakura ebi

the “gohan” item for the set was soba with sakura ebi. nice too.

tasty dish & sakura ebi flavour & texture was a great accompaniment.

#8 vanilla ice cream with chestnut

they did not have the kuromame which they supposed to serve so replaced by a vanilla ice cream with pistachio chips & chestnut mash in the middle. nice dessert too.

the omakase lunch is now S$95pax (S$88pax before). it is 8-course c/w with the omakase dinner, now at S$178 pax and S$218pax (S$138pax & S$188pax before). it is not cheap but with 3 servings of A5 ohmi wagyu i guess that is still for me the best jap omakase in town for the price.

if c/w the previous same omakase say on 2.2.2017. the ingredients were distinctly inferior, but overall the omakase lunch still very good. just hope there is no continuous shifting of prices north & ingredients south!

the razor clams were very well done, consistent & perfect texture 火侯& the best garlicy flavour & with tanhoon. great stuff! 🙂

there were 11pax. i ordered 5 boston lobsters at the promo price @ S$29.80 each. ^^

i know the superior stock preparation 上汤焗 is good here so i ordred 3 lobsters in superior stock上汤焗.

i had wanted to the pumpkin preparation which was the popular dish at ah yat grandstand.

the server said they don’t do here, and she recommended the lime sauce preparation.

and it was very good. very tasty sauce indeed!

it trigger my interest, maybe i will try doing pumpkin sauce preparation and also this lime sauce preparation at home, maybe with prawn first & see if i want to progress to crab or lobster…

& it is done really well here. excellent every time, and no different this evening. ^^

they charge like S$2.70pax for tea & another S$3 per plate of peanuts which is tied to the napkins. so we have to pay for the nuts otherwise no napkins.. for our 11pax dinner they charged $9 for peanuts + napkins…maybe it is inventive, but i think it is a nuisance, though ok if the food is good & price is right then let them make some money ok la…

dinner for 11pax was S$%18 nett. i think price ok considering we had 5 lobsters, 1.2kg crab. 1 kg garoupa, 11 razor clams + brocoli + horfun.

everyone enjoyed the food.

anyway we had a very fun dinner, my family of 5 + my good friend & bro dentist + godsis & 2 hubby + 3 RI bros…

very memorable evening & happy birthdays to my wife, daughter & son…
