crab roe sharksfin soup

crab roe sharksfin soup (limited to one order)

bought wife & family a fab 5pax mother’s day lunch at majestic today on 8.5.2016. ^^

look at the crab roe sharksfin soup (top photo), a perennial favourite of ours at majestic. it was still so good! one of the very best soup i had, so sweet & tasty.

chilli lobster

chilli lobster (limited to one order)

majestic does a mother’s day ala carte buffet lunch at S$68pax++ with 15% citibank discounts.

a new item on the ala carte buffet menu was chilli lobster (used to be a NOT great chilli crab). for me, still not great la…

we came early at about 12pm. restaurant was full by 1230pm.

majestic restaurant

i did not find a recent post on majestic on my blog. perhaps i did not record.

the one i had was 3 years ago, a world gourmet summit dinner in apr2013.

roast duck, roast chicken, char siew, siew yoke

roast duck, roast chicken, char siew, siew yoke

for today, there was a self service station. the roasts were excellent!

roast duck, roast chicken, char siew, siew yoke

roast duck, roast chicken, char siew, siew yoke

roast duck was especially good. we had a few individual helpings. char siew was good. siew yoke ok not as good as the usual cube roast pork servings in these kind of good restaurants.

lotus bun, pumpkin, braised duck wing

lotus bun, pumpkin, braised duck wing

the lotus bun was good. we shared one among 5 of us. i took the braised duck wing. the pumpkin with 肉松was non-descript for me. wife liked it though.

century egg porridge皮蛋粥

century egg porridge皮蛋粥

i wanted to try the porridge. took a tiny bit. it was good!

braised belly pork卤肉

braised belly pork卤肉

the braised belly pork was very flavourful. texture was tender though it didn’t look it in the large serving claypot.

har gau虾饺

har gau虾饺

from the ala carte menu, har gao was average. many dimsum places like crystal jade, imperial treasure better.

crab roe sharksfin soup

crab roe sharksfin soup (limited to one order)

the crab roe sharksfin soup was limited to one serving each. top draw stuff!

chilli lobster

chilli lobster (limited to one order)

the chilli lobster was so so for me.

chilli lobster

chilli lobster (limited to one order)

chilli gravy was good especially with the bun which was excellent.

lobster meat was not bouncy. did not feel like live or fresh lobster.

the thai lemongrass chilli lobster i had recently at red house was far, far better.

wasabi prawns

wasabi prawns

wasabi prawns were very good. tops!

did not look it though with too much of the green mayo. but the batter was very good, not like most places where they were thick, hard, tough. prawns were very fresh, water melon a great balance, counterpoint.

chilean seabass

chilean seabass

i love chilean seabass, & majestic served very good steamed ones in their regular menu.

here it was non descript.

锅仔牛柳beef ribs korean style - galbi

锅仔牛柳beef ribs korean style – galbi

the galbi style beef ribs were ok.

somehow it works better when served in individual small portion courses.

lobster crab roe broth

lobster crab roe broth

the sharksfin soup was limited to one order. there were like 3 or 4 other soups unlimited orders. we ordered 2 lobster crab roe broth to share.

a pretty good soup, though no comparison with the crab roe sharksfin soup.

spinach wolfberry soup

spinach wolfberry in superior broth

the spinach wolfberry was good. this something i can do easily myself.

oyster mee sua蚝仔面线

oyster mee sua蚝仔面线

wife love the oyster mee sua.

oyster mee sua蚝仔面线

oyster mee sua蚝仔面线

it was very tasty with nice oyster flavour.

this also something quite easy to do myself-basically a good stock, as also for the spinach wolfberry, that’s about it.

salted egg custard buns流沙包

salted egg custard buns流沙包

the salted egg custard buns流沙包 was very good here.

i ended up eating 1.5 portion.

really enjoyable lunch & family time on mother’s day.

after that, some of us had what my children called food induced coma.

not eating dinner this evening.

really!

4pax Birthday ala Carte Buffet Lunch @ Jing on 28Dec2013

korean-styled beef ribs with kimchi

korean-styled beef ribs with kimchi

was buying a birthday lunch for a friend couple & decided to go Jing for the weekend ala carte buffet lunch on 28.12.2013.  Jing is a joint venture by majestic chef yong bing ngen & low lik peng. the location is better however somehow i always find majestic food better. anyhow had not been to jing for many years so thought i would try it out again. 🙂

the weekend ala carte buffet is S$48pax, with 1 fee for 3paying using citibank credit card. previously it was S$36pax also with the 1 free promotion but perhaps that was sometime ago. anyway these days most better ala carte buffet would have cost this amount. 🙂

peking duck

peking duck

previously peking duck was served at a cold cut station. this time it was served as a table order which was preferred. it was competent.

the fish maw soup was good as usual. we also tried the dumpling soup which was very tasty too!

we ordered 3 dim sum – a scallop dumpling, a deep-fried dragon beard scallop dumpling & a abalone crystal dumpling..they were good too.

杨枝甘露 - mango pomelo dessert

杨枝甘露 – mango pomelo dessert

the korean-styled galbi beef ribs with kimchi (top photo) was good as usual. the wasabi prawns were crispy, juicy, good, though my personal preference was for less mayo (like at majestic). the chilean seabass was kind of disappointment as majestic served a very tasty chilean seabass – this one was not firm & flat in taste.

the deep-fried soon hock was competent. the chilli crab was better than i expected as i had previously very poor chilli crab at majestic.

we had the monkey head mushroom dish – quite a meaningless nothing dish for me, just tasting the sweet sour “gong bao” taste.

the sliced beef with sweet basil was poor. most zi char did this better, even the S$9 thai basil beef set at le wu.

the sharkskin “pao fan”, a soupy rice dish, was also a dish that could do w/o, basically just eating carbo.

the mango pomelo dish was very average, nothing like that the 杨枝甘露 at tunglok signature.

birthday cake - swissbake paradiso

birthday cake – swissbake paradiso

overall, my guests felt it was quite a good lunch. i thought i was ok too, though i didn’t really think it was any better than peach garden’s ala carte buffet which was cheaper & had wider choice of food.

i got a birthday cake from swissbake called paradiso, & Jing kept, served & arranged for the birthday boy to bring back the cake. 🙂

Lunch @ Sarang Restaurant at Orchard Central on 20Mar2013

korean banchan (side dishes) comprising kimchi, peanuts & kimchi carrots

korean banchan (side dishes) comprising kimchi, peanuts & another veg kimchi

had lunch with my sister today. I had 2 xS$30=S$60 deal.com Sarang vouchers (which I paid S$30 for) expiring soon so we decided to lunch there.

I don’t frequent korean restaurants much these days. My family are mostly carnivores aka meat-eaters and for barbeque beef we generally prefer the Japanese-style korean barbeque yakiniku restaurants. One of my wife Lisa’s favourite yakiniku place is Aburiya. We used also to go to Chang & Hyangtogol but find them rather expensive. Though we all like banchan, those very nice free & refillabe korean side dishes, but they cannot be our sole motivation for having korean.

Sarang at Orchard Central served a very small banchan, comprising just peanuts (which was very nice & we duly had our free refill of peanuts), and the usual cabbage kimchi & another vegetable kimchi.

kimchi belly pork with tofu stew – S$15.80

We ordered the kimchi belly pork.  Though I would have liked it with a lot more soup (like the kimchi chigae which I always like and order at Aburiya & Watami),  this belly pork was differently done (not just boiled like in kimchi chigae to add base to the soup) & very much better, had very good “mouth-feel”(口感) in texture and taste.

20130320_121433

spicy sotong (squid) – S$11.80

We also had the spicy sotong (squid) which was a generous helping. It might be too spicy for some but was perfect for me.

20130320_121629

galbi (korean beef ribs) – S$24.80

We also added the usual galbi – korean beef ribs. It did have a bit of fat & tendons but it was a very nice dish which I liked a lot and was as good as that served at Chang (though I would need to confess that was many years ago). I guess the chef was a bit modern in his approach so his banchan was not quite the traditional big spread of side dishes, his sotong (squid) was accompanied by thin white noodles & this galbi dish also came with a cup of smooth potato mash (not in picture).

The meal comprising 3 very good dishes & banchan came to just S$34nett (about S$26++) using the vouchers.  I think the prices were actually quite fair for the quality of food offered even though I am unlikely to frequent soon without the discounts.
