i have not been here for very long as son is away no one to eat the pig trotters with me la.. 🙂

S$62 4 dishes set meal for 3-4pax(2) = curry fish head, pig trotters, ngoh hiang & chap chai

we ordered the S$62 set meal, with 4 dishes for 3-4pax. we computed the ala carte price would have been S$67 so just S$5 discount. well still a discount if you wanted the dishes, so ok la.

curry fish head

curry fish head

it came with curry fish head (angkoli), pig trotters, ngoh hiang & chap chai.

curry fish head

curry fish head

the fish head was yum yum, very good, drank up all the curry.

fish was fresh & sweet, quite enough meat for 3 of us.

i like this curry much better than that at sanpo food court, blk 431 clementi ave 3 (like for like). somehow that curry taste a bit off for me, not the one i had in mind whereas this one fits perfectly.

& i like this better than the assam fish head at dulukala peranakan restaurant at beauty world centre. that was a different style & assam not bad too but i prefer this chinese style fish head curry.

braised pig trotters

braised pig trotters

the braised pig trotters was something i missed, not taken for a long time.

braised pig trotters

braised pig trotters

it was still good, especially the gelatinous skin, but actually quite below my expectations.

braised pig trotters

braised pig trotters

the starchy sauce was so so for me, & the quite sinewy meat was below par for me thought the skin & gelatinous parts were good.

i think my own braised trotters much better than this in terms of both flavour & the texture of the meat, tender, with bite & not sinewy.

ngoh hiang

ngoh hiang

the ngoh hiang here was really good. crispy skin, & tasty fillings with some crunch. tops!

chap chai

chap chai

chap chai was good too. better than dulukala’s version of chap chai.

dinner for 3pax was S$70. i supposed ok but no particular good value.

i may still come back here for the curry fish head la, but no more the pig trotters.

Quick Dinner after Movie @ Crystal Jade Lamian Xiaolongbao Great World City on 7Nov2015

xiaolongbao小笼包3

S$5.50 xiaolongbao小笼包

went with wife to watch the movie “spectre” at gv grand on 7.11.2015.

quite boring really…the opposite of “the intern”, no engagement, no development, no tension/expectations/relationships/chemistry among the cardboard characters..no anything…

like i was telling a friend on facebook, as boring as terminator or a 1970s chinese kungfu movie…fight fight fight fight fight..nothing in between…

after movie, we a bit “sian” to go zion road food centre, anyway not much to eat there also (don’t think much of zion road char kuay teow even though it is PM’s favourite), & didn’t feel like driving elsewhere for makan, so went down one floor to crystal jade lamian xioalongbao for a quick bite…luckily just waited 5mins at around 9pm.

saliva chicken 口水鸡

S$9.80 saliva chicken 口水鸡

we ordered xiaolongbao小笼包, saliva chicken 口水鸡 & beef brisket noodles 牛腩面.

somehow this evening the same dishes didn’t seem as shiok as that at hollandv.

beef brisket noodles 牛腩面

S$9.80 beef brisket noodles 牛腩面

beef brisket noodles 牛腩面. the noodles were very good al dente & 爽口& the sauce & flavours were good too.

beef brisket noodles 牛腩面

S$9.80 beef brisket noodles 牛腩面

the briskets were quite tasty, but both the briskets & overall taste of the beef brisket noodles 牛腩面 was NOT as good as that at SICC, i think quite a bit NOT as good, not just marginally.

beef brisket noodles 牛腩面

S$9.80 beef brisket noodles 牛腩面

also both this beef brisket noodles 牛腩面 & SICC’s & in fact all the beef brisket noodles in singapore do not use the 崩沙腩 which i love in hong kong’s 牛腩面, the belly cuts they used in the hong kong beef brisket noodles.

they have layers of collagen 胶 made them very flavourful & gelatinous when braised.

these were the cut of briskets which my friend bought in chinatown market, which i also did after learning from her.

she brought her fabulous 清汤牛腩 to my place for a for a homecooked 16pax 17-course dinner on 26.8.2015.^^

saliva chicken 口水鸡

S$9.80 saliva chicken 口水鸡

the saliva chicken 口水鸡 always quite good at the hollandv outlet that we usually go.

here it was ok too but somehow this evening like not as shiok as expected.

saliva chicken 口水鸡

S$9.80 saliva chicken 口水鸡

just not the same 口感 mouth-feel.

xiaolongbao小笼包3

S$5.50 xiaolongbao小笼包

always love the xiaolongbao小笼包!

xiaolongbao小笼包3

S$5.50 xiaolongbao小笼包

you can see the soup inside the xiaolongbao小笼包. it was very tasty & flavourful as always, the skin thin & the fillings very tasty.

we ordered a second tray of xiaolongbao小笼包.

dinner was S$34nett for 2pax after DBS card 10% discounts.

somehow the food this evening just did not feel so shiok, don’t know why.

Tapao (Takeaway) Dinner @ Holland Village XO Fish Head Bee Hun Restaurant on 11Feb2015

fish belly soup 鱼肌汤

fish belly soup 鱼肌汤

went to watch “Still Alice” at orchard cineleisure with friends on 11.2.2015. 🙂

it’s a movie about early onset of alzeimer. it’s quite slow. but it was a meaningful movie. good actress julianne moore. & kristen stewart was pretty good too.

some of my friends felt the movie was not intense enough, too watered down. they made the same comment about “The Theory of Everything” on stephen hawkings.

for me though, both were ok. the director & scriptwriter had to pick the scenes that best communicated with the audience. perhaps some real live stresses, more intense discord among the characters, tempers flaring might carry the message better. maybe that will offer more tension among the characters & more acting challenges. but i also understand that some methods of portrayal use subtle conversations to convey deep emotions, distress, tension and being conflicted. (i must say that i did not feel any strong connection to alec baldwin feeling conflicted with wanting to go to washington instead of spending the final months with his alzeimer wife though he did stay with her, so in my view that was mediocre acting).

for me the few scenes like telling the husband “why are you not listening to me” when her facial expression seamlessly morphed from anxious sharing to indignation & frustration with the husband not listening to anguish, sorrow & despair needing comfort marked her out as a very good actress. so was the speech at the alzeimer interest group.

& the several scenes of tension with lydia (kristen stewart) showed very good (if subtle – i quite like this subtle approach rather than flaring of emotions though it really depends on the acting, scripting & portrayals) tension between a mother losing her mind & a daughter wanting to be independent & not emotionally blackmailed but loving & caring for the mother. she got across the emotions of tension & conflicted. 🙂

ok, so much for the movie.

the food at cineleisure B1 sucks. so we decided to tapao dinner before movie. a friend picked up the food from Holland Village XO Fish Head Bee Hun Restaurant 荷兰村XO鱼头米粉酒楼.

san loh hor fun生捞河粉

san loh hor fun三捞河粉

the san loh hor fun三捞河粉 was good, but i thought i had tapao better wok hae ones from there. still it was tasty, good fish slices & i love the chilli padi & pickled green chilli.

some tofu dish with prawns & shimeji

some tofu dish with prawns & shimeji

the tofu dish with prawns & shimeji was competent, a good dish.

chicken breast with liver & gizzard

chicken breast with liver & gizzard

the 白斩鸡 chicken rice chicken? pretty good. my friend got the healthy chicken breast. actually chicken breast is the real test of good cooking, so this was pretty good – tender, moist, sweet. didn’t think it was better than my own poached chicken 白斩鸡 nor my son’s lemon roast chicken though.

& confession – i still like drumstick better..haha!^^

fish belly soup 鱼肌汤

fish belly soup 鱼肌汤

i liked the fish belly soup 鱼肌汤 especially. it was xo preparation with good amount of xo (i guess). enjoyed the soup very much.

it was very substantial dinner at S$40 for 4pax (though we had someone who hardly ate), very decent considering food court prices these days. 🙂

Scrumptious Kagoshima Wagyu Dinner @ Arossa Scotts Square on 3Sep2014

kagoshima wagyu medium rare (180g)

kagoshima wagyu medium rare (180g)

watched a very good movie “the hundred-foot journey” at shaw lido with wife yesterday on 3.9.2014, and decided to go across the road to arossa at scotts square for dinner. 🙂

i weren’t going to take photos & blog at first as we came here only 2 weeks ago & had wonderful miyazaki wagyu on 16.8.2014.

anyhow we ordered the same uni (sea urchin) pasta to share & also 2 new menu items – kagoshima wagyu (miyazaki wagyu not available) and an iberico pork chop, so i decided to blog in the end. 🙂

uni (sea urchin) pasta

uni (sea urchin) pasta

uni (sea urchin) pasta

uni (sea urchin) pasta

the server offered to split the uni (sea urchin) pasta. it was good as before. i enjoyed this wonderful starter very much. 🙂

lightly breaded iberico pork chop

kagoshima wagyu medium rare (180g)

kagoshima wagyu medium rare (180g)

we had such a superb miyazaki wagyu steak here & we were looking forward. but this time they replaced it with a kagoshima & it was just fabulous, perhaps more. chef watanabe is such a skilful specialist in grilling technique. the steak was so nicely charred for maillard reaction & the meat was pink & consistent, and very flavourful & marbled with melt-in-the-mouth texture. 🙂

lightly breaded iberico pork chop

lightly breaded iberico pork chop

the lightly breaded iberico pork chop was very good as well, though one could not compare a spanish pork chop to japanese wagyu…lol. 🙂

the jap wagyu will bring me back here sooner than later, and also there are other items on the menu including squid ink pasta & antipasti etc which i can explore further. 🙂
