Nice Coffee & Pastry & Breakfast Place @ Tiong Bahru Bakery on 22Mar2016

tiong bahru bakery

tiong bahru bakery

a RI friend organised a 8pax “eat-about” on 22.3.2016. ^^

we started with breakfast & coffee at tiong bahru bakery.

then went for early lunch at loo’s hainanese curry rice nearby.

after that we had the hawker centre coffee at tiong bahru food centre.

& the we bought some cakes + lim lam hong angku kueh & came to my place for another cuppa.

i say – this tiong bahru bakery really crowded! 🙂

croissant

croissant

must say that the plain croissant is one of the best i had. 🙂

flaky outside soft inside & nice buttery flavour.

almond croissant

almond croissant

not so hot on the almond croissant.

there were some promotion …i think its about S$2.50 each.

flat white

and the coffee is good here!

pastry stuff not top of my list, but i quite happy to have a nice cuppa & chat with good friends. ambience wise it is no better than any of the good coffee places.

after a relaxed coffee chat, we walked over to loo’s hainanese curry rice for the second part of our “eat-about”,

Coffee & Cake @ Assembly Coffee on 17Mar2016

coffee + apply crumble with ice cream

coffee + apple crumble with ice cream

3 OPS (Outram Primary School) classmates came over to my place & we had a nice, enjoyable homecooked lunch on 17.3.2016. ^^

after a great lunch, dessert, chit chat, we decided to go out for a cuppa.

one friend had to leave so 3 of us went to assembly coffee at evans road in 1 car. 🙂

we ordered cappuccino, flat white, hot chocolate + one apple crumble to share.

last time i came here was with family on 28.12.2014. that time the latte art was good & lemon meringue was very good!

apple crumble with ice cream

apple crumble with ice cream

lemon meringue ran out this time.

my friend ordered an apple crumble to share.

it was pretty good actually. apple was not too sweet, nicely done, texture & taste. crumle top was great & the pie base was good too.

maybe i can make this cake.  i make an ok jam crumb cake. & before that i made a pretty good apple pie too. so maybe can combine the 2 together.

flat white

flat white

i had my usual flat white. no much latte art today. barista not around?

coffee is good here though not really standout vs say chye seng huat at tyrewhitt road & dutch colony at pasarbella @ grandstand or carpenters & cook.

it was great spending time with old friends from primary school. 🙂

Coffee & Waffles & Cake in a Jar @ Grin Affair Bishan on 3Mar2016

grin affair

grin affair

after a nice late lunch at kim san leng food centre, another friend joined us & 4 of us walked over to grin affair for a cuppa on 3.3.2016. ^^

the place was recommended by a friend’s daughter. these days, it’s the young folks that recommend hip places to us. 🙂

coffee @ grin affair

coffee @ grin affair

i had my usual flat white. did not take a photo.

coffee was good, though nothing so different. i would say carpenters & cook, assembly coffee, dutch colony, CSH etc has better ambience & overall experience, and some have better pastry.

this place is ok.

grin affair discount voucher

grin affair discount voucher

there was a 1 for 1 promotion for the waffles at S$5.90.

it was pretty good. came with ice cream (we picked durian, strawberry, earl grey etc), and very nice cookie & cream soil at the bottom. at S$3 it was quite good & the small portion of waffle was just nice for us each.

there was some other voucher on the table so i took a snap.

cake in a jar

cake in a jar

bought some cake in a jar for my daughter also – a laichee passion fruit & a greentea.

she was good with it. i tried 1 teaspoon myself…laichee was good, green tea so so for me la…

after that we ordered 1 flat white. that was the best i had so far during this trip, i think equal or better than monmouth, & better than the one i had at sennen cove. so we ordered a second cup.^^

Shiok (Satisfying) £20 Lobster Lunch @ Burger & Lobster on 8May2015

lobster roll

lobster roll

wife arrived this morning on 8.5.2015 & took heathrow express to paddington because we wanted to collect & change the sleeper ticket to penzance (cornwall) which could only be done at paddington & few other train stations. i went to paddington to meet her & came back to the apartment.

son was attending lecture & we had some matters to attend to. 🙂

we arranged to meet for lunch at burger & lobster dean street at 12.15pm. wife & i took bus 390 to tottenham court road & walked to burger & lobster on dean street. 🙂

we could only be seated when all 3pax arrived. our son came just few minutes later & we were seated right away.^^

burger & lobster dean street

the place was 1/2 full, but when we were leaving about 1pm+ it was pretty full. 🙂

lobster roll

lobster roll

this the place where you need only a drinks menu. for food its only (1)burger (2)whole lobster steamed or grilled (3)lobster roll.

wife ordered lobster roll which was easy to eat & also had very good brioche. i had at my last visit asked & was told that lobster roll only came with steamed lobster (as it was from a common pool). son & i ordered a grilled whole lobster each. ^^

Nice Afternoon Cuppa @ aeiou on 28Apr2015

flat white

flat white

after a satisfying big prawn noodles at why eat har, a friend suggested going to a retro place for a cuppa on 28.4.2015.

i guess the 2 of us were diehard kopi guys, so we drove in 1 car to king george’s avenue to this place called aeiou.

aeiou

aeiou

aeiou didn’t sound very creative? don’t know. it could be that they are a group that is also into children education, edutainment etc.

aeiou

aeiou

inside was quite interesting, retro as my friend said.

aeiou

aeiou

& there was a vertical landscape wall, though it didn’t look particularly attractive.

flat white

flat white

flat white was good, smooth & fragrant-

probably about the same as carpenters & cook

also about same as assembly coffee w/o the standard of latte art (not a great differentiator for me)

my personal preference where coffee is concerned –

chye seng huat is better

dutch colony also better.

torn tyre mirror

a torn tyre mirror? pretty cool idea.

oriental antique house

oriental antique house

i supposed cool chic cafe place can be a good way to bring traffic to the antique house. don’t know. 🙂

we did not try the cakes, so my friend suggested we may go again with some friends for the yuzu cheese cake, salted caramel cake & lemon tart. 🙂

Coffee & Snacks @ Carpenter & Cook on 10Apr2015

lemon drizzle cake

lemon drizzle cake

an old friend from my past life called. he bought me coffee & snacks at carpenter & cook at lorong kilat on 10.4.2015.

my daughter organised a family outing here just last week on 1.4.2015.^^ we enjoyed the pastries, coffee & time together. 🙂

this time i wanted to try the lemon drizzle cake.  it was nice as my daughter said, but after tasting it, i still think of it as a quite dense butter cake slight lemon flavoured & drizzled with some lemon on top. that was what i thought of it the last time. we did not try it then.

i took 1/2 & my younger friend helped me with the rest. not that i did not like it but got to watch calories etc, anyway you get the drift. haha!^^

pain au chocolat

pain au chocolat

friend ordered a pain au chocolat. i did not try. i guess it should be good but maybe also ordinary & it’s not my favourite anyway.

i still like the lemon tart & quiche we had the other day here.

flat white

i had my usual flat white & he had a iced long black.

Fresh Pastries & Great Coffee @ Carpenter & Cook on 1Apr2015

banoffee, lemon tart, quiche

banoffee, lemon tart, quiche

son was back from london for a very short break. 🙂

he did 10km run with me this morning with my good friend & weekly running partner.

my daughter made the arrangements & we managed to find time to go for a 4pax family coffee/snacks at carpenter & cook this afternoon on 1.4.2015.^^ excellent outing this! wonderful food & ambience. 🙂

retro display

retro display

there were price tags on the quaint collections (i spied an old typewriter at S$800!) which included some enamel floral painted plates on the wall, tables & chairs etc. hence carpenter – we were told by the proprietress shenn, who is a pastry chef who pulls the weights for the other part of the name – cook. ^^

banoffee pie

banoffee pie

banoffee pie was excellent! there was a coffee infused top. shenn said it was rare. the toffee was freshly made, very mildly sweet & excellent flavours (different form what i learned for the internet boiling a can of condensed milk in water for 3 hrs).

well, shenn told us her bakery was just downstairs at the same premises & all the pastries were own freshly baked & not from a common supplier. ^^

my own banoffee pie was not too bad but this was of course better. 🙂

lemon tart

lemon tart

lemon tart was very nice also. very mildly sweet (which we liked) & nicely tangy, & a nice crisp tart base.

bacon quiche

bacon quiche

both my daughter & i wanted to try the quiche. we picked the bacon quiche. i thought it was really savoury & nice. we all liked it. i tried a mini quiche previously, not too great, maybe i may try it again.

flat white

flat white

the flat white was smooth & silky, micro foam well blended, & great flavours.

it didn’t have the latte art of assembly coffee. well i guess no latte art at all.

taste wise, it was as good as dutch colony & assembly coffee. maybe chye seng huat was better, couldn’t really remember. it was good anyway.

Love This Place – Assembly Coffee (on 28Dec2014)

cafe mocca

cafe mocca

son is back for 2 weeks winter break, & i am having more coffee breaks than i had for the whole year. 🙂

this time we had sunday brunch – roti prata at S.M.Aisha & teochew cold crab at di wei teochew restaurant at food canopy at botanical gardens. :-).

afterwards, we walked over to assembly coffee for a cuppa on 28.12.2014.

lemon meringue

assembly coffee is a nice cool place to chill. we had 2 flat whites, a cappuccino & a cafe mocha, plus a lemon meringue.

the young lady barista created a beautiful, delightful swan latte art on the cafe mocca. it looked so easy…

the coffee & milk micro-foam were smooth & nice flavour.

daughter ordered a lemon meringue. it was very nice. lemon was tangy not too sweet & combined well with the biscuit crust & cream. i think i can make this one. so definitely try it at home. ^^

i will put this on par with chye seng huat at tyrewhitt road & dutch colony at pasarbella @ grandstand turf club road, with the advantage that it served a really good lemon meringue. i will also try the waffle & the salted caramel nut cake? next time. 🙂

i don’t go out for coffee often. the last time i had a nice cuppa with wife was at chye seng huat at tyrewhitt road on 17.9.2014.

i have a good coffee machine at home & recently i ordered 8x1kg caffe aurora from qbfood (it’s like 40% the price of lavazza coffee from culina! mostly when i had coffee outside it would be the “kopi-c go song tilok” aka kopitiam kind. ^^

we had flat whites & the children had some banana cake. like chye seng huat the coffee here was quite good. flavour was great, frothed milk was velvety smooth & combined well with the coffee. this reminded me also of the nice cuppa i had in london with my son-

at monmouth cafe in covent gardens on 22.8.2014, and

at melrose & morgan during our walk along regent’s canal to primrose hill on 24.8.2014.

the 2 in london were much better but that could also be the colder weather & we were doing a bit of walking & the mood was right & perfect for a cuppa.

by comparison i feel chye seng huat is better but really not by much. CSH place is cool but dutch colony is nearer if i really want to place with good coffee to chill.

Coffee & Pies @ Windowsill Pies on 8Sep2013

windorsill pies

windorsill pies

windowsill pies

windowsill pies

we were going for a family photo taking at a studio at king george avenue on 8.9.2013. the children had this thing about windowsill pies & of course they knew there was a horne road outlet which was just short walk from the studio.

we were early for the photo shoot so we had a nice afternoon tea break at windowsill. 🙂

my daughters ordered the popular pies – a banana almond, strawberry lemon & a coconut lime vodka. all the pies were very nice really. the strawberry lemon (which my daughter said was their best) was nice too but just a little too sour for me. my favourite was the banana almond, though i agreed with the others that the lime vodka was very good, as the sourness as tempered by the vodka, and had more of a lingering after taste. 🙂

also, here my flat white was very good, latte art barrista standard, unlike the 1/2 cup very “flat” white i had at bar bar black sheep.

well overall i thought it was a really great place to chillax & catch up with friends & family, have a relaxing cuppa & enjoy a bit of good pies. i am not much into desserts so you will not see me frequenting such places. if friends want to have a cuppa together with some bites, then this is quite great place to chill out! 🙂

Light Meal @ Bar Bar Black Sheep at Cluny Court on 7Sep2013

garlic naans

garlic naans

i was joining couple nadal fan friends to watch the nadal-gasquet & djokovic-wawrinka us open semi-finals on 7.9.2013.  we were gathering at 11pm to stay up for the unearthly hour (singapore time) matches. i intended to skip dinner to limit my calorie intake as we would be munching tidbits over the long night! 🙂 anyhow my daughter wanted to go bar bar black sheep so i decided to just tag along & not eat. 🙂

butter chicken

butter chicken

mutton briyani

mutton biryani

my wife & daughter ordered a butter chicken & garlic naan to share. my daughter’s friend ordered a mutton biryani & i ordered a flat white for myself. i had one bite of the garlic naan, a piece of butter chicken & 1 teaspoon of biryani with mutton to taste the food.

the biryani & mutton were very average & the price was expensive for indian dishes, either S$16 or S$18. the butter chicken tasted ok but had a strange red colour. the butter chicken i had previously were all yellow curries. price was S$12. i guess this was bar price, it would be like S$8 or S$9 at most indian restaurants in serangoon. 🙂 the naan was good.

i had previously had burgers & indian at bar bar black sheep at cherry avenue (old holland road). cannot remember the prices, but i think burger was good & indian food was also good & didn’t think the price was high. here at cluny court, it occupied the previous da paolo restaurant premises with a nice courtyard ambience. i guess rents are high so the food prices.

the food i tried was limited but based on what i had & the price (my flat white i think cost S$5 & it was not good too & initially i was served a black then it was replaced by 1/2 cup flat white in a very small cup), i would not come back again!
