Much Below Par Crab Beehoon Soup @ Uncle Leong Jurong East on 6May2016

crab beehoon

crab beehoon – S$68/kg add S$5 for soup

i arranged a 5pax lunch with my OPS primary school buddies at uncle leong jurong east on 6.5.2016. ^^

i had quite many excellent crab beehoon soup at uncle leong jurong east last year (2015).

& recently a OPS primary school buddy bought a very good lunch at red house, so i wanted to let them try the crab beehoon soup at uncle leong.

crab beehoon

crab beehoon – S$68/kg add S$5 for soup

price of crab has gone up from S$63/kg to S$68/kg. adding soup still S$5.

higher price is ok, but somehow the soup was not as intense & flavourful as every of the previous times i had???

crab beehoon soupcrab beehoon soup=1kg crab S$63

if you look at the 2 past photos above, the soup previously all had a deeper yellow colour. just by the look, it appeared more delicious than what we had today!

also, as one friend mentioned immediately, the crab was not as “strong” ie the meat texture is not as firm, and i felt also not sweet as a very fresh good crab should taste.

recently i made a 6-course dinner including crab beehoon soup for a very good friend’s birthday.

the crab beehoon soup i made using 2x250g small crab was very nice. i commented that uncle leong’s was much better, but if i were to c/w what we had today, i think mine was better both for the soup & the crab. my crabs were tiny but very sweet!

cereal prawns

cereal prawns – S$25

the cereal prawns was still good.

however for comparison, i just had cereal prawns at red house 2 days back for another friend’s 7pax bjrthday dinner, and red house cereal prawns were so much better.

seafood pot

seafood pot – S$30

the seafood pot was still very good.

many good ingredients including fish maw, sea cucumbers etc.

hotpot tofu

hotpot tofu – S$15

this hotpot tofu was the worst dish. no comparison at all with any zi char tofu dish say the likes of kok sen etc

hotpot tofu

3-egg tofu – S$15

i used to think this was the best 3-egg tofu.

my taste buds must be different today, but while it was still pretty ok, i thought the recent 3-egg spinach at red house was better.

longan sea coconut

longan sea coconut – complimentary

when we first tried the crab, immediately we told the server it was not so good.

i did not really expect anything, it was not so good but it was not like “bad”. anyhow the server arranged a complimentary longan sea coconut dessert for us.

the lunch came to S$176nett for 5pax like S$35pax. it was really quite below my expectations, much below par.

the last many times i came in 2015, i used a $51 for S$100 voucher so those meals were first super nice & second like super value-for-money. this time no discounts, but i was ok if only the food were as good, but they were not….

(My First) Crab Beehoon Soup

crab beehoon soup

crab beehoon soup

recently i had crab beehoon soup twice at uncle leong jurong east, excellent both times.

the taste was like lingering, most endearing, i decided to give it a try myself & did one myself on 11.12.2015.

i googled online recipes, & fashioned after crab bee hoon soup at foodmadewithlove.net, which itself was a variation of rasamalaysia.com’s crab beehoon recipe.

i set my sight on uncle leong’s crab beehoon soup. it is of course just an aim, not an expectation.

crab beehoon soup

crab beehoon soup

happily as it turned out, my first crab beehoon soup was really quite good.

both my daughter (who already had dinner) & my wife loved the dish. broth was very tasty ( i feel not as intense as uncle leong’s but both wife & daughter said they were quite happy as it was).

the crab was very sweet & firm.

crabs from sheng shion S$29.95per kg

crabs from sheng shiong S$29.95per kg

i went to sheng shiong & bought 2 crabs at S$29.95/kg for S$30.55, so each crab was about 500g.

but daughter was eating out, so there were only wife & i for dinner. i decided to kill & put one crab in a ziploc bag & put in the freezer.

prepared crab 500g

clean & prepare crab – 500g

the other crab was full of life so i kept it in water with some ice till about 5pm, then put in the freezer for 1/2hr, then kill & clean the crab, break the pincers & cut into pieces.

crab beehoon soup

the recipe was a lot simpler than i thought –

  1. broth was actually quite easy to prepare. i fried 10 sliced ginger & 1 cut chilli padi in 2tbsp butter (30ml) in a claypot, then added 3cups stock (i used chicken veg stock).
  2. (i added some chinese cabbage & boiled for 1/2hr, then added 1tbsp shaoxing wine 绍兴酒, 1tbsp fish sauce (to taste) & 1cup evaporated milk.
thick beehoon

when ready to serve, i added 1/2 packet of thick beehoon & the crab into the claypot, and boiled for about 8 to 10mins.

crab beehoon soup

it was a very enjoyable dish & so easy to prepare.

it’s a small crab, 500g c/w 1kg at uncle leong’s. crab meat was firm & very sweet today. overall a truly excellent dish.

Best Crab Beehoon Soup at Uncle Leong Jurong (Encore) on 7Dec2015

crab beehoon soup

crab beehoon soup

went back with family for 5pax dinner at uncle leong seafood at jurong last evening on 7.12.2015. ^^

i was here recently with some friends on 17.11.2015!

"full" or "solid" crab

“full” or “solid” crab

well, it was just as heavenly this evening. whole family loved all the food.

crab was solid (there was a smallprint on the web menu that they do not guarantee the crab is “solid”), flesh was firm.

& very sweet, even though it was boiled in the beehoon soup.

well, & the beehoon was just heavenly, no word to describe!

the soup ran out quickly so my second helping was mostly beehoon, but it was so infused with the crab flavours…..

uncle leong jurong seafood

uncle leong jurong seafood

it’s a bit quieter this evening on a monday maybe jut 50% full.

sea cucumber mised seafood pot

sea cucumber mised seafood pot

the sea cucumber seafood pot was STILL excellent. very fresh seafood (razor clams, scallops, prawns, fish), very light broth, no fishy taste, very sweet.

i think i can make this dish.

pumpkin prawns

pumpkin prawns

pumpkin prawns was good i guess c/w many places. as good as any just not as wow c/w the other very shiok dishes.

3 egg spinach

3 egg spinach

the 3 egg spinach is the best i had in any restaurant or zi char place.

this evening, on second try, wife & daughter also think it was very good (their first try), a bit less thrilled for me whereas for the crab beehoon soup & seafood pot, still same shiok feeling.

salted egg crab

salted egg crab

wife & daughter loved the salted egg crab too.

daughters also loved the deep-fried mantou 馒头.

crab beehoon soup

crab beehoon soup

it was good, just not in the same league as the crab beehoon soup. wonder if i can do this.

dinner came to S$235 for 2x1kg crabs at S$63/kg, plus 3 other dishes, drinks & whatnots. i think it was ok w/o discounts. with the groupon discounts S$120 for S$200, the dinner came to S$155. quite super!

service was just as good as the last time. i did not give tip this time though. it’s a in the mood thing, no need to do every time. 🙂

The Best Crab Beehoon Soup @ Uncle Leong Jurong East on 17Nov2015

crab beehoon soup

S$63 crab beehoon soup

i bought a S$200 groupon voucher & 5 of us went to uncle leong seafood at 262 Jurong East Street 24, #01-485 Singapore 600262 for crabby dinner on 17.11.2015. ^^

all my friends agreed this was the best crab beehoon soup we had for years!

uncle leong jurong east

uncle leong jurong east

uncle leong jurong east

uncle leong jurong east

2 of us were there slightly earlier at 6.45pm. the crowd came in later & place was quite well patronised, not sure if it was because of the groupon deals.

sri lankan crab

S$63/kg sri lankan crab

we managed to get 2x1kg sri lankan crabs. ^^

at first the lady server said may not have 1kg (only bigger) but she went anyway to check & i went over also, and she got the 2x1kg crabs. 🙂

display shelves

display shelves

they had display shelves. 🙂

our enjoyable crabby dinner

our enjoyable crabby dinner

we decided on 1 crab beehoon soup. i asked about the dry crab beehoon but seemed that it was not a popular order. we picked the golden sand crab + 1 deep-fried mantou 馒头 (or buns).

crabs were S$63/kg, so that took up S$126 of the S$200 voucher. we ordered 4 other dishes – a 3eggs spinach, spicy minced pork tofu (锅仔豆腐), sea cucumber seafood pot and a pumpkin prawns. 🙂

crab beehoon soup

S$63 crab beehoon soup

the crab beehoon soup was pure heaven!!! ^^

so intense, smooth, sweet, and the crab was firm & “solid” (there was actually a clause on the online menu saying they do not guarantee that the crabs are “solid”). 🙂

crab beehoon soup

S$63 crab beehoon soup

for me, heaven was a long time coming.

last time i had crab beehoon soup was december 2014 at mama kong. no comparisons really!

& before that, maybe fast backwards 15 years? at melben toa payoh ave 8. that was heavenly too. in between? don’t know but i don’t remember…

spicy minced pork tofu

S$15 spicy minced pork tofu (锅仔豆腐)

the other dishes we ordered turned out to be good, very good to excellent too.

the spicy minced pork tofu (锅仔豆腐) belonged to the just “good” category. a very competent dish actually, can’t really criticise it, but the spicy chilli not the type i like. it was not so matching food and by comparisons, the other dishes  were much better.

3 eggs spinach

S$15 – 3 eggs spinach

this 3 eggs spinach was quite excellent.

3 eggs spinach

S$15 – 3 eggs spinach

one of the best tasting i had. it is a common dish at zi char & i thought of not ordering it.

3 eggs spinach

3 eggs spinach

but it was done really well. spinach was crunchy not overcooked & you could taste the 3 eggs distinct flavours quite well. 🙂

sea cucumber seafood treasure pot

S$30 sea cucumber seafood treasure pot

& this was a really, really good sea cucumber seafood treasure pot.

sea cucumber seafood treasure pot

S$30 sea cucumber seafood treasure pot

the sea cucumber were not the top quality thick ones, but still quite good quality. the prawns, fish, razor clams, scallops etc were all very fresh & the broth was really delicate, smooth but super tasty, par excellence! 🙂

sea cucumber seafood treasure

sea cucumber seafood treasure

for me, this dish can rank with what top chinese restaurants here can deliver.

pumpkin sauce prawns

S$25 pumpkin sauce prawns

the pumpkin prawns was very competent dish. prawns were fresh, same preparations basically deep-fried. only difference with wasabi, salted egg etc was the sauce.

a friend preferred the salted egg version. for me the pumpkin sauce was good too, but somehow i remembered they tasted better at ah yat turf city (quite sometime back) in pumpkin crabs but i think those had curry leaves flavours.

golden sand crab

S$63 golden sand crab

for me, the golden sand crab was very good too. this was their signature dish.

my friends were ok with it, not so wowed as the crab beehoon soup! 🙂

crab claws2 crab claws

the crab though same 1kg, somehow had smaller claws, still good but overall the crab beehoon soup trumped this.

deepfried mantous

deepfried mantous

deep-fried mantou 馒头 (or buns) to dip in the creamy sauce.

golden sand crab + mantous

S$63 golden sand crab + mantous

some may prefer chilli or pepper crab. i don’t mind this at all or the pumpkin crab, probably like them better than the salted egg version.

dinner came to S$234, so with the groupon voucher discount (S$119.80 for S$200), it was S$154 for 5pax, 6 excellent dishes with 2x1kg crab dishes & a really “right up there” sea cucumber seafood treasure pot. about S$31pax nett.

i must add that the service & attitude (almost entire army of chinese servers) were really good. i gave them a sizable tip when leaving.

we all enjoyed the dinner & company tremendously. after that we adjourned to a friend’s place nearby for a nice cuppa, nespresso. 🙂

i bought another voucher when i got back. ^^

Good Crab Dinner @ Momma Kong’s on 20Dec2014

crab beehoon soup

crab beehoon soup

daughter & friend bought 6pax family dinner @ mama kong’s at mosque street on 20.12.2014 🙂

we were worried about traffic & parked 2 streets away at temple street, but actually there were quite a few lots at mosque street at 6pm on a saturday.

we seldom eat crabs. mainly because everyone is lazy to do the shells, and crabs are kind of rather ex in singapore. the last time my wife & i had crab at ming kee, very enjoyable of course – the 1.4kg sri lankan crab alone cost S$75.60++. not quite my thing but once in a long while i can be a bit crabby.

momma kong's

momma kong’s

the small restaurant was packed full. we had a table which was comfortable for 4pax but kind of cramped for 6pax.

stir-fried chilli squid

stir-fried chilli squid

i guess everyone came here to eat crabs, so stir-fried chilli squid was the only non crab dish we ordered.

crab beehoon soup

butter crab

butter crab

butter crab

butter crab

we ordered crab beehoon soup, butter crab & chilli crab = any set of 3-crab for S$118 on the menu, a small discount from ordering 3 separate crabs at S$42each.

later we added another crab beehoon soup. no prizes for guessing which crab we liked best. 🙂

all the crabs were good. they were smaller crabs, from vietnam or indonesia maybe, about 800g? not sri lankan crabs. all 4 crabs we ordered, the meat were firm & completely filled the shell and very sweet, so for me it was very good & not overly ex.

the chilli crab sauce was competent but i guess boring. the butter crab sauce tasted like the very nice salted egg pumpkin crab sauce at ah yat which i like a lot. it’s a toss up with the crab beehoon soup. usually the impression is that the crab flavours go into the soup (which it did) so the crab is less tasty. in this case though the crab was still tasty & i guess the beehoon soup trumped the butter crab sauce. ^^

we had buns of course, both deep-fried & steamed to wipe up the chilli sauce & butter sauce. 🙂

overall, it was an excellent dinner. excluding wine & beer etc (seems that corkage is only from second bottle onwards, so first bottle free). table was really cramped & i broke a wine glass when reaching out for food. crab! very sian! a server later broke another glass. maybe my table is jinxed.

i may actually come back again though i am not so very crabby person.
