wife bought 4pax family early birthday dinner for JH @ amo hong kong street on 1.5.2021. ^^

and of course grandson mr k is in attendance. 🙂

amo is good standard restaurant…just few shops away from foc…I have not tried foc recently…past experience has been foc food better, tastier and also lower price than amo…especially iberico rack, rack of lamb and squid ink paella & also fiduea.

today we had burrata which is good and competent..

not as good as latteria mozzarella bar….

& very good calamari

we shares a whole lobster pasta also very good…

but for me 8picure lobster pasta is much better..

rack of lamb is good & competent…

I think foc one was better..but foc iberico rack best!

tagliata was ordinary…wife and daughter made such good mirin ribeye steak at home, it’s hard to get better steak,

except 8picure’s ohmi A4 wagyu!

this RI vegetarian bros started by THK…. he and I do vegetarian every 初一十五

one of our first get together was at my house..

I did a 8-course all vegetarian dinner for 8pax on 13.1.2021.^^

this the second RI vegetarian bros get together…

joie is a modern japanese fusion vegetarian restaurant by dozo (which is a modern japanese european restaurant i frequented a lot in the past and my eldest daughter had her 21st birthday party long while back).

the long break I had was since 2015. …recently I came with 3 other friends 2 months back. today is my 4th visit to joie.

my friends were suitably impressed.

the dishes were all good – charcoal tempura, button mushrooms mozzarella as escargot…bai ling mushrooms for japanese paper hotpot, crepes mushroom soup etc.

my monkey head mushroom “steak” on hoba leaf 朴叶good as always.

I have not tried the other 2 main dishes…the wild rice and eggplant terrine looked really good..the layered pastry should be good too…will try next time.

had a great time together and lovely fusion japanese vegetarian …

I had 2 course with tagliata di manzo $5 supplement

J & i had Stracciatella Cheese with Eggplant Caponata & Pine Nuts

this was excellent..really delicious burrata very tasty with eggplant..highly recommended

GYS had cream of carrots also nice soup

GYS had gamberi tagliatelle, J grilled organic barramundi (both i tasted..barramundi very good..pasta also tasty)

& i had thd tagliata di manzo..excellent..better than what i had at basilico 2 days back.

GYS had the tiramisu

an excellent lunch and great chat too.

Excellent 2pax Birthday Lunch @ Basilico on 26Apr2021

had 2pax early birthday lunch for my close RI bro NCL @ basilico on 26.4.2021.^^

this 3-course lunch now S$68pax (S$65pax few weeks back) with 1 for 1 amex love dining discounts….excellent value at S$34++pax after discounts…before coffee was included now no…

nice antipasto platter and cheese dessert platters.

for mains NCL had risotto fruit di mare. very tasty I know and excellent risotto.

I had tagliata di manzo beef tenderloin sweet & tender though i like previous sirloin medium rare better.

antipasto famous at basilico and the cheese platter top draw too.

had a wonderful lunch with a close friend.

service at basilico excellent every time…

parking was like S$13.38 and we drove 2 cars…lukily server got us 2 free parking….heng ah!

almost same, maybe hill street somewhat better …here cannot add cockles but uncle gave us lots of cockles for $4.. uncle showed me the amount of cockles he added for our normal $4 though cannot add hum..

also lots of larpok and ckt very tasty so $4 basically same as hill street $6(add cockles).

to continue the ghost stories by prez and prof LKY……eeeeeeeeeeeee…..

I made –

  1. 烧肉 for predinner drinks
  2. 腊味沙煲饭 sausage claypot rice
  3. 酱蒸松鱼头 meensi song fish head
  4. 卤元蹄 teochew braised hock & trotters
  5. huadiao steamed chicken with wolfberries
  6. claypot tanhoon prawns
  7. 3-eggs spinach

(& to skip as requested-steamed pork with salted fish 咸鱼饼😀) can’t remember why skip but I guess we had lots of food already la!

beng san brought humongous cockles coached by chee hong with detailed instructions on poaching (but according to prof didn’t have salt water to remove mud 🤣)

prez brought cheese…

everyone loved the crackling blistered roast pork, very tender and juicy inside, made one of my best roast pork this evening haha!

cockles were so large and fresh and poached nicely…excellent with the chilli dips!

all the dishes were good! everyone especially liked the claypot rice, so tasty & flavourful…

& the ter kar and tanhoon prawns too…perfect texture and flavours…

chicken and fish head also good & delicious

& I can see the spinach was in short supply very quickly….

we had a really fun evening! wonderful get together and fellowship of old RI schoolmates & bros…

food was excellent the best! as always.

the galician octopus, lobster pasta and ohmi wagyu were simply perfect!

the roast pork, crab cake, gamberro rosso taglialini, herb crusted rack of lamb were all excellent….

pandered foie gras and risotto great too…couldn’t recall much of the eggplant? dish..

& the desserts were just super too.

4pax Birthday Dinner for Good Friend Couple @ Akira Back on 19Apr2021

had lovely 4pax dinner with SMM & B @ akira back 19.4.2021.^^

chef akira back is Korean, grew up in aspen colorado USA, professional snowboarder for 7 years….

the set dinner wasn’t interesting like before, so we decided to go ala carte instead. 🙂

the tuna and crepes mushroom thin pizza was excellent as before. they allow a combo version and that was enough for 4pax appetiser.

we ordered the miso eggplant with mozzarella first tie. it was excellent too. good.. I can improve my miso glazed eggplant.

we ordered 4 mains to share = 2 portions of halibut and 1 portion of ji dori chicken and 1 portion of F1 wagyu.

halibut was excellent, and it was from akira previously that I replicated my own pangrilled halibut on soy beurre blanc sauce.

likewise the jidori chicken on truffle mash was tender and delicious, something I replicated as well (sous vide 75degC 1 hr and pangrilled).

the 350days grain fed F1 wagyu was underwhelming, especially after having the best ohmi wagyu at 8picure several times…

F1 is only 50% Jap wagyu, but I find that Lisa and sulin’s homecooked USDA prime or even just grain fed black angus are as good or better…

the best F1 wagyu I had was at chef Ace Tan pop up at one altitude

we selected our own sushi moriawase from the ala carte menu-aburi otoro, uni, akami, hamachi and unagi, I think about S$90.

sushi of course fresh and sweet…we think though can get much better value at kuirya dining…

had a great dinner conversation and sharing with this friend couple.
