Hong Kong Air Ticket, Hotel & Transport Planning 2-6Jun2015

fried carrot cake at asia treasure T2

fried carrot cake at asia treasure T2

jetstar had a SG50 promotion. it was like S$50 to HK & about S$100pax including fees & taxes. it seems lame to go hong kong just because of cheap air tickets, but i like hong kong, it’s a place i like to go for eating & hiking anyway. i can live in hong kong actually just for the colder months. haha!^^

i wanted to go in nov. actually but sis is busy after oct, and i was already travelling with wife to cornwall 7-18may2015.

so i am back hong kong 2-6jun2015. our 2pax jetstar return singapore to hong kong was S$210.^^

even though it was just 2 months after my last hong kong trip with wife & son on 3-6Apr2015.

jetstar check in was at terminal 1. it was quite convenient that departure gate was next to the sky train to T2. so it was no hassle to get to asia treasure lounge at T2.

asia treasure T2 nasi lemak

no food provided on jetstar, or rather good money for not so good food. so grab what we could at the lounge.

the nasi lemak was pretty good. egg, otah, perkedel, rice all good. for me though, nasi lemak is first ikan kuning, second chicken wing. 🙂

low cost carrier mostly remote bay (using bus ferry to plane) for both departure from changi & arrival at hong kong. though it was using aerobridge for both departure from hong kong & arrival at singapore.

there was a MTR counter after customs & even before getting out to the arrival hall, which had almost no queue so i got 2 octopus cards (HK$50 deposit & HK$100 stored-value) within minutes.

we walked out of the arrival terminal & towards bus bay.

i booked 4 nights at royal park hotel at shatin. so it was really very convenient commuting from the airport.

hong kong airport bus A41 goes direct from airport to shatin and stopped right in front of royal park hotel, which was only the second stop after shatin bus interchange.

flight was late so we arrived 2.15pm & was at the A41 bus bay around 2.50pm.

journey took 50minutes & just HK$22.30 using the octopus card. it’s fixed one fare only so you only required to tap once with octopus card when boarding the bus. 🙂

it’s double-decker. there was a luggage rack both in the lower & upper deck. i always took the upper deck & put on seat belt. strangely though on return from hotel to airport, the bus we took did not have safety belt!

hong kong mtr map

shatin is in new territory so a bit far from action (well depends on what action you are looking for). when i travel with wife, we would stay at tsimsahtsui & not shatin.

while royal park is “in theory” next to shatin station (& shatin bus interchange for that matter), it was a 5-10minutes walk from hotel through newtown plaza to the station, covered & aircon-ed of course.

from shatin, one needs to change train twice to get to shamshuipo, tsimshatsui, & to central. so it’s slightly inconvenient.

also shatin station is actually not underground line but the east rail line 东铁线that goes to罗湖 for entering into shenzhen深圳. & so the inter-change at 九龙塘that connects the MTR to the rail is a rather long walk.

taking the east rail line 东铁线 at shatin going to shamshuipo

we checked into royal park hotel about 4pm. nice hotel. i stayed here once before 5 years back. quite happy with it now as then. 🙂

we decided we could not miss timhowan, so went to the usual shamshuipo outlet after checking in to the hotel, & got there about 4.40pm, zero queue.

since we had a very late dimsum at 5pm. we decided to go much later in the evening for dinner, which we did at keung kee chicken porridge 强记鸡粥 my usual daipaidong 大排档 past 9pm.

Excellent Teochew Cold Crab @ 帝威Di Wei Teochew Restaurant on 28Dec2014

帝威Di Wei Teochew Restaurant is located at food canopy @ singapore botanical gardens. it’s a nice airy canteen, not crowded and with ample parking.

we came here to have roti prata at the muslim food stall S.M. Aisha on 28.12.2014, and was staring at the 2 large cold crabs on display at the teochew stall next to it.

we finally decided 1/2way through our roti prata, to end the staring & all unfulfilled desires and bought one S$16 cold crab.

S$16 large cold crabc

S$16 large cold crabc

it was really good! ^^

it was large, packed with roes, and the meat filled to the shell. meat was sweet.

at first, they gave us a sweet red chilli, the type used in some dimsum restaurant. after some bites, i decided not to let live & asked if they had the teochew “kig you” 桔油.. they had, and very friendly & cheerful about it. so, always ask… ^^

ya..i love this crab..cold crab was S$28++ last time at chui huay lim. this S$16 was just as good.

i plan to come back & try their other teochew food, like braised duck, sambal crayfish etc.

we had roti prata at the muslim food stall S.M. Aisha. each of us had 2 prata gosong. son added a egg prata as well.

total for 4pax for 8 gosong + 1 egg prata = S$7.80.

last 2 times prata here was very good.

this time was ok but not as good. for me, whether crispy or doughy, most important is the taste. today it’s so so. daughter said recently she went back to mr prata, & it was good. these food do vary a bit.

dahl curry

dhal curry

1 of  the best prata stall i had. didn’t have many though to really make comparisons.

most important for me where prata goes are (a) freshly made (b)tasty dough (c)good dhal curry..i am ok whether it is the crispy type like at 6th avenue or the slightly doughy type at mr prata or at s.m. aisha which had all 3. 🙂

& the mutton curry was really good, very tender.  i still love the mysore mutton at mr prata more, but for mutton curry, this was good! 🙂

the ambience was great too. nice airy canteen, lots of parking on a saturday morning, very clean…by comparison mr cafe down the road is kind of messy.

Cheap Good Prata & Mutton @ Mr Prata on 18Sep2013

roti prata - 2 for S$2.20

roti prata – 2 for S$2.20

wanted to have some good prata. also recalled that mr prata served very good mysore mutton, which i much preferred over mutton curry, i took a short drive to evans road & had a cheap meal at mr prata. 🙂

mysore mutton - S$4.50

mysore mutton – S$4.50

mysore mutton - S$4.50

mysore mutton – S$4.50

roti prata - 2 for S$2.20

roti prata – 2 for S$2.20

prata gosong came in pairs – 2 for S$2.20. it was very good, fresh prata can seen from the photos. 🙂 this was the doughy version though some might prefer the crispy version eg at 6th avenue coffeeshop.

the mysore mutton was S$4.50 & enough for 2pax really. it was tender & tasty. compare this with the S$12.90++ rogan gosht we had at jade of india recently (which was not good). i liked it over mutton curry which usually comes in a larger piece of mutton instead of diced cubes & often not as tender.

the whole meal include S$0.20 for iced water came to S$6.90. i looked at the menu a bit & the prices were a bit more ex than coffeeshops but a lot cheaper than restaurants. biryani were S$6 and dum biryani (meat cooked inside the rice & the version served at restaurants) were S$8. garlic naan though was expensive at S$3 about restaurant prices. butter chicken & chicken tikka masala were like S$5. chicken tikka kebabs S$8. the murtaba looked ex at $6 i guess if c/w coffeeshops. though prata gosong is cheaper at 6th avenue (i think maybe still 2 for S$1.60) they were a lot smaller & often either not fresh or long queue. anyhow i had not eaten there for a very long time so not really sure. 🙂

maybe will suggest to my G8 friends to have dinner here. 🙂
