smoked duck

this evening we gathered at a friend’s place for a movie session on 6.8.2016. ^^

long queue at ah seng 4.45pm saturday 6.8.2016

long queue at ah seng 4.45pm saturday 6.8.2016

we started with some durians from ah seng. 🙂

i prebooked MSW (mao shan wang) 2 days before. still they ran out of MSW & told me i had to wait till past 6pm for another batch to arrive. i couldn’t so switch to golden phoenix + D13.

i was lucky i got my durians soon enough. as i was leaving at 4.45pm on a saturday, the queue had built up. these people just queueing to get a queue no.

golden phoenix

golden phoenix

golden phoenix + D13

golden phoenix + D13

i had 4 golden phoenix at S$49 + 4 D13 durians at S$29=total S$78.

as it turned out we were very happy with the golden phoenix + D13. D13 was flavourful but actually not as good as the other day. golden phoenix was excellent, very nice flavour, mild but lingering. ^^

lor mai kai 糯米鸡

lor mai kai 糯米鸡

lor mai kai 糯米鸡

lor mai kai 糯米鸡

the host made some lor mai kai 糯米鸡.

i like never take this except for dimsum. this one was very good, chicken very tender, rice was tasty, top slightly dry but inside ok. even ginger was nice.

after all these eating we started our movie. it was a korean movie “the man from nowhere”. quite a nice action movie, good acting.

the bark cafe

the bark cafe

after movie host drove us to the bark cafe just by changi prison. it was about 9.30pm. quite an interesting place.

caesar salad

caesar salad

when i started writing this review, i looked at other reviews. strangely they were almost all negative, only hungrybunnie mentioned that the smoked duck was good.

for the dishes we ordered for this evening, they were mostly ok, good by my standard.

the caesar salad was pretty ok, like any other caesar salad.

chilli razor clams

chilli razor clams

the chilli razor clams was my friend’s favourite for the evening! 🙂

chilli razor clams

chilli razor clams

it was ok for me. 🙂

dish was overall tasty, razor clams no sand & not overdone = which should equal good la!

sauce i think was the xo type, so the strong flavours type, a bit robust, but then chinese style dishes supposed to taste this way.

spicy beef tenderloin

spicy beef tenderloin

the spicy beef tenderloin was a chef’s special on the menu. i asked & the server said it was tenderloin. i asked if preparation was chinese style, he said there was vinegar.

a friend said the beef was “joon” teochew for tough. actually for me it was ok, for this price not expecting the expensive beef cuts. i have never tried this preparation before, sliced like tagliata, not raw like carpaccio, & with quite a lot of vinegar?

spicy beef tenderloin

spicy beef tenderloin

anyway i quite like the taste, and texture was ok for me, just slightly tough.

smoked duck

smoked duck

for me also, the smoked duck was the best dish for the evening.

the smokey flavour was excellent, and the duck was juicy & tender. like hungrybunnie said, this dish belongs more to the atas restaurants, and they did it exceedingly well here. for me that was top restaurant standard. the mash & rockets were good too.

medium rare tea smoked duck breast - 12.4.2016

my own medium rare tea smoked duck breast – 12.4.2016

definitely better than my own, which was pretty good itself. 🙂

chicken & cheese pizza

chicken & cheese pizza

i didn’t mind the pizza. i supposed it was nothing special but still a good pizza. pizzas could be bad too, but this was decent to good.

chicken wings

chicken wings

the chicken wings my friend highly recommended. & it was good.

chicken wings

chicken wings

though not as good as my helper’s deep-fried chicken wings, which is better than most i get outside.

dinner 6 dishes for 6pax came to S$152, abut S$25pax nett. pretty decent la i would say.

fried hokkien prawn mee-bestest!

fried hokkien prawn mee-bestest!

a RI friend invited us to her newly done place for homecooked dinner on 13.11.2015. ^^

it was a wonderful evening of fun, laughters & memories.

we decided to have a PCK theme. some friends went to get a S$1yellow helmet for all, and we had the round floor protector pads for molds. haha! ^^

btw, my favourite dish for the evening among all the good food was the fried hokkien prawn mee! (top photo). it was done by the hostest brother, who made a couple other dishes & joined us for dinner.

it was the bestest! i have not tried making that. not sure i can do it. 🙂

cheese board

cheese board

the host & hostess had some cheese board which we enjoyed before & after dinner.

cheese board

cheese board

the blue, an english stilton blue cheese, was excellent! i really enjoyed that. 🙂

chicken wings

chicken wings

chicken wings were good.

good curry chicken

good curry chicken

curry chicken was the thicker, more powdery type. chicken was sweet. curry was tasty.

i quite like this curry though it was different from the nonya curry chicken i make.

roast chicken

roast chicken

roast chicken was good too, moist, tender. 🙂

some veg

some veg

there were broccoli & carrots.

nice long beans

nice chilli long beans

the chilli long beans were done well. 🙂

love the soto ayam

love the soto ayam

there was also itek tim, but i did not take photo.

very good pork ribs

very good pork ribs

pork ribs were fork tender, and taste great.

very good pork ribs

very good pork ribs

it inspired me to make my own louisiana styled pork ribs afterwards.

roast pork ribs (or soft bones?) - super

roast pork ribs (or soft bones?) – super

& the roast pork ribs. i had a few pieces. it was fatty but really excellent! maybe it was soft bones rather than ribs.

i want to do this one too. still thinking how to do it. 🙂

very good bread pudding with vanilla ice cream

very good bread pudding with vanilla ice cream

a friend brought a very good bread pudding.

very good bread pudding with vanilla ice cream

very good bread pudding with vanilla ice cream

especially nice served with vanilla ice cream, no need to prepare separately a hot cream custard.

very good bread pudding with vanilla ice cream

very good bread pudding with vanilla ice cream

it was convenient & great party food, no need to cut & you can scoop what you want.

i went home & make one myself, a very good bread pudding also.

very refreshing fruit cokctail jelly dessert

very refreshing fruit cokctail jelly dessert

there was also a very refreshing fruit cocktail jelly dessert. we were full to the brim. still i had 2 helpings.

frozen eclairs

frozen eclairs

Worst Barachirashi Don & Chilli Crab Linguine in Singapore @ Babette on 18Sep2015

ctopus tempura & cauliflower

octopus tempura & cauliflower

daughter bought dinner @ babette on 18.9.2015 to celebrate an important occasion for her. ^^

babette

babette

ambience was quite cool i guess, though a much lower level of decor c/w say foc. the table & chairs were like canteen sitting.

service was really poor because of shortage of staff. we waited very long to be served even after signalling to the servers several times. 😦

octopus tempura

octopus tempura

octopus tempura was poor. octopus was tough, batter was not tempura standard.

octopus tempura

octopus tempura

but perhaps that is to be expected. octopus are usually sous vide (eg our favourite tako kakiage at mikuni) or slow braised & grilled. octopus done by this preparation will almost certainly be tough. 😦

cauliflower

cauliflower

cauliflower was ok i guess but non-descript.

cauliflower

cauliflower

passable i guess.

bara chirashi don

bara chirashi don

this barachirashi don must go down as the worst ever!

bara chirashi don

bara chirashi don

yes!! the worst barachirashi don in Singapore! they have pickled carrots & radish mixed in the barachirashi don??? made the don overly sour unlike a sweet vinegared don. never had such preparation before.

even the photos may look quite pretty, but in terms of taste, this would be 1 if sumiya’s is 7 & sun with moon@wheelock’s is 8.

chilli crab linguine

chilli crab linguine

the chilli crab linguine was also the worst i ever had.

chilli crab linguine

chilli crab linguine

chilli crab sauce was overly sweet. crabmeat had not much taste probably the very cheap frozen stuff.

it’s the standard of any fast food or cheap pasta joints. 😦

duck confit don

duck confit don

the duck confit was very good though. may not be better than saveur or concetto but it had good crispy skin & the meat was very flavourful & not very sinewy.

duck confit don2

duck confit don

the don was not much taste also, but at least the duck confit was a saving grace. it was very expensive though at S$28 c/w saveur & concetto!

afterall, duck confit at saveur & concetto were just S$13.90! ie 1/2 the price!

steak & foie gras don

steak & foie gras don

the steak & foie gras don was the best of the lot!

steak & foie gras don

steak & foie gras don

the steak was very good.

steak & foie gras don

steak & foie gras don

think the steak was an average cut so the preparation was really quite good to give it nice bbq flavours & not tough texture.

i made my own steak don the next day. my steak was very good but a better cut, 150D grain-fed black angus striploin, so quite commendable for the steak don here.

chicken wings

chicken wings

chicken wings was surprisingly good. better than what my helper makes, which is a very good chicken wing. we added the order at the end & it took forever (like another 20mins) to arrive. 😦

chope's promotion - does not honour chope's offer of complimentary lava cake for every S$50 spent frown emoticon

babette does not honour chope’s offer of complimentary lava cake for every S$50 spent!

we had a bad experience though-

restuarant did not honour the chope’s black & white offer of a complimentary macha cake for every S$50 spent!

the bill

the bill

we spent S$257 & got only 1 complimentary macha lava cake! 😦

i asked for just a second macha lava cake (afterall we spent 5x the every S$50) but the restuarant refused.

i guess the management & staff are not properly schooled in service recovery. 😦

macha lava cake

macha lava cake

i did not like the macha lava cake either. macha was very sweet & very strange combination of flavours unlike the macha parfait kind of flavours which i like (say) at sun with moon. one good thing though was that my youngest daughter liked it. just as well we only had 1 complimentary cake.

Marvellous Thai @ Patara Fine Cuisine on 19Jun2013

curry NZ sirloin

curry NZ sirloin

see also 29.7.2013 Patara update. 🙂

my wife bought some Creative Eatery vouchers. our favourite in the group is Patara Fine Cuisine @ Tanglin Mall. they serve 1 of the best tomyam talay (seafood) and olive rice.

when Patara was part of palate benefits with 1 person dining free, we went there often. for Thai food though, it is harder to order for 2pax to get the 50% discount, so we sometimes went in 3pax & had 33% discounts. The vouchers we used this time were purchased at 50% of the voucher value so it’s a better deal even. 🙂

tom yam talay

tom yam talay S$23 for 1 pot serving 2-3pax

we loved the tom yam talay here. 🙂 an earthen pot serving 2-3pax costing S$23 came with 2 plump scallops, 2 large prawns and many pieces of sliced squid, and the flavour was wonderful. 🙂

Thai betel nut skewers

Thai betel nut skewers – S$18

my wife liked the betel but skewers, like a Thai satay. it’s not my favourite but it was a nice dish nonetheless.

olive rice

olive rice – S$19

my other favourite dish here was olive rice, another superb flavourful dish, 1 of the few rice (carbo) dishes I would clean up the plate..haha. 🙂 the other place I would do that is (the fried rice at) Imperial Treasure. 🙂

20130619_130735 20130619_130749

Thai stuffed chicken wings also not my favourite. however this one here was 1 of the best I had, the chicken was very crispy but NOT dry & the minced chicken stuffing was tasty.

20130619_130925 20130619_130819

another look at my 2 favourite dishes. 🙂

curry NZ sirloin

curry NZ sirloin – S$27

& the best dish par excellence we had this time had to be the curry NZ sirloin (above & top photos). the beef itself was great, tender & done slightly medium rare, and the curry added such a wonderful combination of flavours. 🙂

we also had their delightful durian sticky rice dessert. the one here was a touch of class. it came in 2 aperitif glasses, 1 containing the durian sticky rice with coconut milk, the other with a coconut ice cream (regrettably I forgot to take a photo). they were heavenly taken together. 🙂 it cost S$15 & we shared among the 3 of us.

the lunch, 5 dishes + 1 dessert cost S$150, so it’s S$75 using the vouchers. I do find Patara a bit steep in terms of normal pricing (but I guess no more so than Thanying etc), but with the discounts it was a great deal! 🙂
