Comfort Food 15pax Dinner @ Singapore Polytechnic Food Haven on 22Jul2014
we had our monthly get-together at singapore polytechnic food haven on 22.7.2014.
we had 15pax. the place basically served zi char food in an air-con restaurant ambience. we had 20% discount & no service charge as our organiser is a staff at SP. 🙂
#1 cereal prawns was pretty ok, competent, flavour was good, though batter a bit much.
#2 tofu soup was ordinary like any tofu soup.
#3 i liked the presentation of the steamed seabass, like a fish swimming in the water. 🙂 it was done teochew style with mildly sour soup from salted vege & sour plum. fish was fresh & good as a seabass could be. 🙂
#4 beef with ginger & spring onions (姜葱牛肉) was also competent, like a good zi char eating house. beef was tender OR should i say tenderised. 🙂
#5 likewise the claypot tofu. a good competent dish. 🙂
#6 sweet sour pork ribs was good too.
& so was the #7 fuyong egg?
#8 sambal kang kong was another common, simple, tasty dish i liked.
a friend commented that the skin of the #9 red beans pancake was too thick. indeed so! the dough flavour was good though so i did not mind the tucker skin. 🙂
#10 mixed fruits were good like any.
a friend brought some ‘healthy’ baked cookies. it had nuts (almonds & walnuts), raisins & cranberries, and not too sweet, so healthy indeed, for cookies that is. it was good! haha. 🙂
another very pleasant evening. time passed too quickly. a few friends did not join so often so it was good occasion for catching up. there were few other patrons & we almost had the restuarant to ourselves..haha. 🙂
food was pretty ok, competent. with all the staff discounts the cost was just S$12pax, cheaper than most coffeeshops zi char. 🙂

Good Average Value Nyonya Food @ Curry Wok on 6Feb2014
had not dined at curry wok for the longest time. it is located next to thai noodle house at coronation arcade.
used to like the great value set which included fish head curry & 元蹄 (stewed pig trotter). i knew the prices had gone up a few years back. anyway i went with sis & b-i-l & a chinese friend to try it on 6.2.2014. 🙂
the set, now S$56 (+1o% service & no GST), included the pig trotter, a small fish head curry, a ngo hiang & a chap chai dish.
the pig trotter was really very good, very tender, gelatinous w/o feeling too oily 肥而不腻, quite excellent! for comparison, i would say it was equal or better than the S$28 pig trotter 元蹄 dish at shin yeh.
the fish head curry was also very good, however my b-i-l commented this was the smallest fish head curry he had ever eaten, and it was! the ala carte menu said the price was S$22 (S$26 for large). it was more like S$12 (for this tiny size)!
the ngo hiang S$10 was pretty good. the chap chai S$8 was another small dish & ordinary.
we were greedy so added a sambal sotong (squid) for S$10 ala carte. it was good but portion was too small.
overall the food was good especially the pig trotters, and the fish head curry was likewise an excellent dish if it came in a more decent size. it was too expensive at S$22. as we took the set for 4pax, the total bill came to about S$77 w/o drinks (just water), so it was not really expensive but it was also not any special value. likewise the ala carte pricing for the sotong, ngo hiang & chap chai – ok not great.
i would come back for the pig trotters though when i have the kakis. 🙂

Great Dinner Chat with Friend @ Jumbo Riverwalk on 3Jun2013
my daughter arranged this dinner at Jumbo Riverwalk with a good friend of mine who has been giving her guidance & good advice. 🙂
I generally like the food at Long Beach & Jumbo. I ordered a 6-course set for 4pax. we had a good chat, most enjoyable dinner & pleasant evening.
the menu said we start with a 姜葱 lobster with ginger & scallions – this was good standard as expected & I ate a lot of the scallions too. 🙂
for this night though, the restaurant served us the seafood fried rice & sambal spinach first. the menu item was asparagus but the restaurant said they ran out so we chose 蒜茸garlic spinach. when it came to the table it was sambal spinach. not ideal, but the spinach was nice – that’s what counted! 🙂 the seafood fried rice was just ok, average – too average i think for a popular restaurant
the steamed cod (top photo) was very good! 🙂 i think I must try doing it at home.
the chilli crab was decent in taste but for me it had no kick. all the foreign tourists in the crowded restaurant were dutifully ordering this and clearly relishing it, so it was good! anyway, my wife could not take too much chilli this evening so nothing lost. 🙂
the ice fruit sago dessert was very refreshing, a little sweet but no sweeter than usual ice jelly at the hawker centre.
there were lots of foreign tourists trying out chilli crab so even the mild version was quite good though I liked it to be better. 🙂
