this a quick update.

had lunch with couple old RI friends at yantra at tanglin mall on 9.1.2014.  i had lunch at yantra couple of times previously, on 1.8.2013 & before that on 10.6.2013. ambience was great & food was quite good & great value at S$19pax for mon-thurs buffet lunch. 🙂

the server placed a dish with garlic naans & tandoori roti on our table. i generally like both indian vegetarian & non vegetarian dishes & eating garlic naans & tandoori roti with the sauces & dahl. 🙂

garlic naans & tandoori roti

garlic naans & tandoori roti

at our age we should be avoiding heavy buffet meals, but actually what was important was just picking the dishes one liked & having a moderate amount of it.  i picked couple of murgh (chicken) dishes, a lamb rogan gosht, and some battered prawns & had 1/2 naan & 1/2 roti. didn’t see paneer & fish dishes this time.the prawns were excellent & i had a second helping afterwards plus some vege dish & <1 tablespoon basmati rice, before taking some fruits. so lunch was in fact quite ok, not too heavy but nice tasty food.

we adjourned to the B1 foodcourt for a nice cuppa afterwards. very pleasant lunch, company & conversation. 🙂

Average Indian Lunch @ Jade of India on 10Sep2013

fish head curry - S$25

fish head curry – S$25

i had not had indian fish head curry for several years. the recent fish head curry lunch at banana leaf apolo with my RI friends triggered my craving. saw the deal.com voucher S$12 for S$20 & bought 3 vouchers for 3pax lunch on 10.9.2013. 🙂

papadum

papadum

rogan gosht - S$12.90

rogan gosht – S$12.90

chicken biryani - S$11.90

chicken biryani – S$11.90

garlin naan (S$3.50) & tandoori roti (S$2.50)

garlin naan (S$3.50) & tandoori roti (S$2.50)

i ordered a fish head curry, chicken biryani (since 3 plain rice cost S$9), rogan gosht & 1garlic naan + 1 tandoori roti. liked the papadum & the dip! 🙂

the red snapper fish head was small but whole (not 1/2) & very fresh & sweet. the curry though tasted quite good was gluey (starchy). i didn’t mind it but the usual ones like what i had at banana leaf was much better & i would not go back if i were looking specifically to have fish head curry! the chicken biryani was very good – tender tasty chicken & flavourful rice which was not too oily, 🙂 the rogan gosht was disappointing – both the curry & mutton. this was a common dish i had taken many times in different indian restaurants and almost always good so this was quite a let down in taste. the garlic naan was also not great. thinking back i probably made the wrong order of mutton. the fish head & biryani were southern indian & i would probably do better with mysore mutton. naans & roti were better with thicker curries so was ok with rogan gosht but less with fish head curry.

the meal cost S$65.70 for 3pax after 10% service & GST. with the vouchers it was S$41.70 nett. so price-wise it was good for the food we ordered. but the fish head though ok did not satisfy my craving for good fish head curry & the rogan gosht did not give me confidence that other curries would be good. don’t think i would go back anytime soon even with discount vouchers.

S$19pax Indian Lunch Buffet @ Yantra at Tanglin Mall on 10Jun2013

See also my Yantra Update on 1.8.2013.

my turn to buy lunch with 2 friends I started some business together in 2000. seems like yesterday. 🙂

Yantra @ Tanglin has a S$19pax lunch buffet monday to thursday (S$25pax friday-sunday),  I like the nice, classy ambience,  and I don’t have too many kakis for Indian food – so we decided to go there. 🙂

food was good flavour-wise, the spread was small but ok really except it lacked a lamb dish like rogan gosht, & a tandoori chicken, and (say) a bharta (eggplant).

the chick pea curry was good with the naans, like all the sauce curries & the dal. 🙂

green chicken curry

green chicken curry

I guessed the buffet was a vegetarian paradise. this green curry murgh & another chicken dish were the only meats (there was a fish tikka & great curry prawns though). I don’t really like both the chicken dishes. a butter chicken (murgh makhani) would be perfect or a tandoori whether whole chicken or tikka.

some mixed vege

some mixed vege

the vegetarian dishes were great. this mixed vege.

aloo gobi (cauliflower) & potatoes

aloo gobi (cauliflower) & potatoes

& also the potatoes aloo gobi. 🙂

prawn curry

I liked this prawn curry & had a few helpings. It went well with the garlic naans.

dal

dal

as did the other curries & dal. 🙂

paneer tikka

paneer tikka

the paneer tikka was the usual tofu texture but not so flavourful.

some squash? & zucchini

some squash? & zucchini

not quite sure what this was, like cucumbers with some squash?

mango pickles etc

mango pickles etc

the mango pickles was nice. 🙂

my plateful of eats

my plateful of eats

did not take a photo of the fish tikka. it’s next to the prawn & potatoes in the above photo – my plate full of food. it was quite good. 🙂 the green chicken & another anemic  looking chicken were at the left.

dessert

dessert

Indian dessert doesn’t work for me. anyhow I am not a dessert person so I did not try any.

overall the food was good, not pricy & ambience was excellent. but somewhat lacking “shiok” factor for me. must go find another Indian food fix. 🙂
