Real Good Curry Rice @ Hoower Food Court on Haig Road on 17Feb2016

after i sent my china relatives off (my second nephew & his wife & daughter family of 3pax) at changi airport, i dropped by a primary school classmate’s place near haig road at about 12.45pm.

he tried a new curry rice stall at hoower food court at haig road recently, so he took me there for lunch. this only his second time here.

the coffeeeshop also served zi char & foo chow fishball noodles.

we ordered from the curry rice stall. there was only 1 person before us, basically no queue.

my friend ordered 4 dishes – curry chicken, curry fish, kong bak & fried egg plant.

the curry chicken was as good as any curry dish, sweet & tasty.

competent dish certainly.

for my personal preference, i prefer the nonya very lemak type previously at river valley nasi rendang (now closed)

& the nonya curry chicken at sinar pagi nasi padang very good too.

the curry fish was very good standard.

curry slightly tangy, fish fresh, firm & sweet.

the kong bak (braised belly pork) was the best, really good texture & flavours.

egg plant also very good, very tasty.

for me among the dishes, kong bak was best followed by curry fish, egg plant & curry chicken. but even the curry chicken was pretty good.

my friend said it was S$10 all-in including the 2 rice.

doesn’t sound possible to me at this price, but anyway i will be very happy to go back & check it out again!

went with sis & b-i-l to ye shanghai for cheap & always good teochew muay on 21.9.2015. ^^

last time i came here was with wife on 8.8.2015.

we reached just about 11am so there was no queue as yet. long queue soon afterwards. 🙂

this time there was ngoh soon. even though the place is supposed to be 24hrs, some food especially the chilled steamed fish, may not be ready at certain time.

fish was excellent, very sweet, i think it only cost S$4.

i ordered the pig skin & kong bak. i heard the guy said S$4.

the kong bak was excellent! very tender, great texture.

the pig skin ok though not soft enough, maybe later in the day it would be softer.

by comparison this time then, the S$2 pigskin at ng ah sio was very much better.

the salted fish minced pork 咸鱼饼 is very good here.

i still have not try making it, but will surely do one day.

egg was very good too. i recall the steamed egg wasn’t great so this time sis wanted the chai poh neng (egg omelette), and it was good! 🙂

cabbage also always good. i think the vegetables at ye shanghai are especially good, even better than shi le yuan.

likewise for the kang kong. excellent dish.

we had 7 dishes including ngoh soon fish & 3 porridge for S$17. sis later went to add another fish & cabbage for another S$5, so total S$22 for 3pax.

what can i say? supernice! ^^

went out lunch with some good friends today on 16.6.2015.

we had wanted to take my favourite chai chuan tou chinese mutton soup 柴船头羊肉汤 at bukit merah view market & food centre. however the stall was closed & seemed that only reopen on 1.8.2015. that’s a long time to close shop!

3 of us were already parked at 11am. we were discussing where to go instead. one that came to mind was the havelock turtle soup合落山瑞, kueh chap or red garoupa fish soup at havelock road food centre.

but then there was already a pretty ok duck & kueh chap stall here = happy duck. 🙂 the other 2 friends were on their way & it was troublesome to drive & to park as well.

so we settled on happy duck!^^

price was reasonable. we had 1/2 braised duck for S$18.

also added the kueh chap including 4 items = pigs ear, intestines, pig skin & kong bak for S$10.

the duck was pretty good for me. duck was tender, good flavour & chilli was great too.

1 friend thought it was average, quite fine. another thought the one next to hoover rojak at whampoa market, liang zhao ji duck rice, was better – that’s my memory too, but i had not eaten at that duck stall for umpteen years. i know what i don’t like though – the one previously at south buona vista with the gluey sauce, lim seng lee boneless duck. taste is personal, haha! 🙂

my own favourite braised duck is at imperial treasure teochew, & it’s not expensive either just S$28 for 1/2 duck (of course that’s a bit more than S$18 here).

another friend’s favourite was 店小二’s roast duck but that is another story. unfortunately we seemed to run out of places to find goose, braised or roast.

we had 2 rice & 2 kueh. that added another S$2, my kueh was ok, average. the rice did not seem to be yam rice, maybe just sauce. another it was just S$2 for 4.

so it was S$30, and it was quite enough for 5pax (1 friend came slightly late & added his own kueh). 🙂

after makan, we had fruits & then coffeshop coffee. i had my usual kopi-c gosong tilok. very shiok.

1 left a bit earlier, 4 of us stayed & chatted for the longest time. haha!
