A Pretty OK Wanton Noodle @ Kwong Kee Noodles East Village on 10Mar2016

S$5.50 wanton noodles

S$5.50 wanton noodles

5 of us were visiting a friend in a ICU at CGH on 10.3.2016.

after visiting we went to east village where a friend has an apartment, and had dinner at kwong kee noodles at level 1.

kwong kee noodles was supposedly from dakota crescent previously. there was a news report mentioning them here.

there were still congratulatory bouquets so they guess they were still settling in.

it was 8.30pm & nearing closing time.

the proprietor & his wife were very friendly & courteous. 🙂

they had wanton noodles,  chicken mushroom noodles 鸡丝面 etc also beef briskets & vegetables.

the large noodles are S$5.50, small S$4.50. more expensive than food centres & around food court prices.

wanton noodle was qq, tasty & very spicy (i like!), a lot of char siew & maybe 6 wantons (4 in soup). just a little salty for me.

char siew was good. wanton was ok. both good not really special.

a friend took the chicken mushroom noodles 鸡丝面. looked good too.

another friend took a small dumpling noodles 水饺面. 🙂

we shared some fried wantons.

pretty good too.

beef briskets

beef briskets

the beef briskets were complimentary. they were closing & basically the proprietor/proprietress were nice & very friendly people.

beef briskets

beef briskets

beef briskets were good like many served in chinese restaurants here.  so they were good competent briskets.

they were though not the 腩肉 that i really liked with a layer of fat & lining that you get in hong kong.

sauteed mushrooms

sauteed mushrooms

we had a complimentary mushrooms too.

pai seh la…too many complimentary things…

mushrooms were very good. i liked them.

overall, a very competent wanton noodles. price a bit higher but i guess justified by the larger serving of char siew & wanton. and i liked the entire dish especially the spicy chilli though it was a bit on the salty side.

Hawker Food @ Food Republic Vivocity on 6Aug2015

thye hong fried hokkien noodles

thye hong fried hokkien noodles

went with son to watch MI5 – mission impossible (rogue nation) at vivocity on 6.8.2015.

we were early & collected the tickets about 6.20pm for a 7pm show. walked around a bit but nothing to shop. decided to go 1 floor up to the food republic at the roof top.

son took the fried hokkien noodles, think it was thye hong hokkien noodles. expensive leh S$5 for a small serving! guess i don’t go food court often and only reference hawker centre prices which are quite a bit lower.

the flavours was good though, very good wok hae!

chinese mutton ribs soup 羊排汤

chinese mutton ribs soup 羊排汤

i thought of having bakchormee, but somehow could not find a bakchormee stall. there was a stall selling some noodles with different variations that might include bakchormee.

(P.S. later i found out that there is supposed to be a lao da hua 老大华 stall there)

anyway i decided to take the chinese mutton soup. did not pay attention, i think it was chinatown beef noodles stall (they sell mainly beef noodles but also has mutton soup).

the girl told me they only serve mutton ribs, so i should call it 羊排汤. it was expensive too, at S$8 & what looked like a few pieces of meat floating around.

my favoruite is chai chuan tou 柴船头羊肉汤 at bukit merah view food centre & it’s only S$6 for the large serving.

the soup was good but when i first tasted it, i thought it confirmed my suspicion as the soup was not so good c/w chai chuan tou 柴船头羊肉汤.

but the mutton ribs, i think it was 崩沙腩,was really good, excellent in fact! ^^

it was very meaty, and still came with the collagen bits just like the very good beef briskets 牛腩i had in hong kong, except that this was mutton. & the texture was perfect tender but not sinewy. chai chuan tou 柴船头羊肉汤‘s mutton also like this but this ones here were a lot thicker & meatier. this is something i really like, so S$8 was quite worth it!

Hawker Tour @ Bukit Timah Food Centre (BTFC) on 19Jul2013

or luah (fried oyster omelette)

or luah (fried oyster omelette)

for zi char tour, see cheap & good zi char on 10.8.2013.

a group of us makan kakis (for this round 4pax) decided to start hawker tours. we picked Bukit Timah Food Centre (BTFC) to start our journey on 19.7.2013. 🙂

food galore @ Bukit Timah Food Centre (BTFC)

food galore @ Bukit Timah Food Centre (BTFC)

for this day we ordered 8 hawker dishes. all were good but not one really stood out.

the HK style beef briskets & offals was very tasty, but actually quite different from those at street beef noodle stalls in HK. the chinese herbal mutton soup was good too, but i would say the amoy street hawker centre one was better & so was bukit merah view.

white fried carrot cake

white fried carrot cake

there were many foodie posts about the white fried carrot cake. it was good, crispy, quite tasty, but…didn’t see much difference from other hawker places or c/w with good black ones, say at ghim moh market. 🙂

if i had to pick, i would say my best was the or luah (but then again, many places did just as well), & after that the HK style beef brisket & offals. 1 friend was missing her favourite “jiu her eng chye” (cuttlefish kang kong) stall which was not open (we were there on a friday 2.30pm to 4pm). 🙂

the fried hokkien mee looked good in the photos, quite good ingredients, but probably rated lower..that could be because we were satiated as we had 8 dishes excluding dessert for 4 of us! 🙂

char kuay teow (fried noodles with cockles)

char kuay teow (fried noodles with cockles)

the char kuay teow had very good “wok hae” & tasty at the start but as it gotten cold it became much less compelling…

both the popiah & rojak were good.

iced cheng chow with aloe vera & lychees

iced cheng chow with aloe vera & lychees

a friend had ice cheng chow with aloe vera & lychee (looked tempting). I had a plain ice jelly.

very satiated… after that 3 of us went to watch Pacific Rim (good enjoyable movie) at Cathay Cineleisure. 2 of my friends had the S$4 movie ticket + free coffee privilege. i had still to bear with paying S$10.50 movie tickets for the next few months. 🙂
