Quick Dinner after Movie @ Crystal Jade Lamian Xiaolongbao Great World City on 7Nov2015

xiaolongbao小笼包3

S$5.50 xiaolongbao小笼包

went with wife to watch the movie “spectre” at gv grand on 7.11.2015.

quite boring really…the opposite of “the intern”, no engagement, no development, no tension/expectations/relationships/chemistry among the cardboard characters..no anything…

like i was telling a friend on facebook, as boring as terminator or a 1970s chinese kungfu movie…fight fight fight fight fight..nothing in between…

after movie, we a bit “sian” to go zion road food centre, anyway not much to eat there also (don’t think much of zion road char kuay teow even though it is PM’s favourite), & didn’t feel like driving elsewhere for makan, so went down one floor to crystal jade lamian xioalongbao for a quick bite…luckily just waited 5mins at around 9pm.

saliva chicken 口水鸡

S$9.80 saliva chicken 口水鸡

we ordered xiaolongbao小笼包, saliva chicken 口水鸡 & beef brisket noodles 牛腩面.

somehow this evening the same dishes didn’t seem as shiok as that at hollandv.

beef brisket noodles 牛腩面

beef brisket noodles 牛腩面. the noodles were very good al dente & 爽口& the sauce & flavours were good too.

the briskets were quite tasty, but both the briskets & overall taste of the beef brisket noodles 牛腩面 was NOT as good as that at SICC, i think quite a bit NOT as good, not just marginally.

beef brisket noodles 牛腩面

S$9.80 beef brisket noodles 牛腩面

also both this beef brisket noodles 牛腩面 & SICC’s & in fact all the beef brisket noodles in singapore do not use the 崩沙腩 which i love in hong kong’s 牛腩面, the belly cuts they used in the hong kong beef brisket noodles.

they have layers of collagen 胶 made them very flavourful & gelatinous when braised.

these were the cut of briskets which my friend bought in chinatown market, which i also did after learning from her.

she brought her fabulous 清汤牛腩 to my place for a for a homecooked 16pax 17-course dinner on 26.8.2015.^^

saliva chicken 口水鸡

S$9.80 saliva chicken 口水鸡

the saliva chicken 口水鸡 always quite good at the hollandv outlet that we usually go.

here it was ok too but somehow this evening like not as shiok as expected.

always love the xiaolongbao小笼包!

you can see the soup inside the xiaolongbao小笼包. it was very tasty & flavourful as always, the skin thin & the fillings very tasty.

we ordered a second tray of xiaolongbao小笼包.

dinner was S$34nett for 2pax after DBS card 10% discounts.

somehow the food this evening just did not feel so shiok, don’t know why.

Guided Food Tour of Old Airport Road Hawker Centre on 2Dec2014

hougang mutton soup - S$6

hougang jing jia mutton soup – S$6

met an old schoolmate for early lunch at old airport road hawker centre 11.30am today 2.12.2014. 🙂

it’s strange. old airport road is such a famous eating place, but i can only remember once i came here with another friend probably 5 years back & he introduced me to a beef noodle stall. it tasted nothing like the hong kong 牛腩面 stalls. i must have been here some other time but there was nothing in my recollections.

this friend comes here like once a month so he gamely walked me round the hawker centre, pointed to the famous hokkien mee stall (no queue yet), past the lor mee stall (already like 15 people in the queue), the fish head beehoon stall (about 6 in the queue).

we ended up at the hougang jing jia mutton soup stall. i went to get 2 bowls 牛杂 mixed rib, tripe, tendon (S$6 each) & he queue for a char kuay teow (S$4 加料 with added ingredients of prawns & squid).

it might be that my expectation was a bit high. i was expecting like chai chuan you 柴船头 @ bukit merah view standard. or at least the standard of yu ji@whampoa market or the other stall #01-75 at whampoa market.

but this hougang jing jia mutton soup was quite a let down actually. something was not quite right about the taste. soup was not as flavourful. i felt the meat was overcooked & too soft not the texture i like for mutton ribs and not as tasty, and chilli was simply too dilute.

for me, this was not comparable at all with the other 3 stalls. my favourite is chai chuan you 柴船头 @ bukit merah view but i like the 2 whampoa stalls too.

the dongji char kuay teow was good. very good wok hae. and S$1 加料 for all that added ingredients of prawns & squid was just incredible. this must be the most value-for-money S$4 char kuay teow.

still, my friend prefers this dry char kuay teow, but i prefer the wet one at hai kee teochew char kuay teow at telok blangah with lots & lots of cockles added – 加料.

we ought to be full by then. but my friend wanted to show me the 2 good wanton mee stalls which were just few stalls away from each other. 1 was closed, so we shared 1 bowl from cho kee. 4 wantons were good, soft, skin held together & tasty. char siew was good, and most importantly noodles was qq & taste was good.

for me i felt the chilli was not spicy enough. this was about same maybe slightly less tasty than the wanton mee at KPT coffeeshop 401 hougang ave 10, S530401, and for me the best wanton mee was still kok kee previously at lavendar food square (not sure where it moved too), & the one at temberling road & red ring wanton mee were pretty good too.

Decent Mixed Beef Soup (牛杂汤) @ Scotts Hwa Heng Beef Noodles B4 Ion Orchard on 19Aug2014

mixed beef soup (牛杂汤)

mixed beef soup (牛杂汤) – S$5

went to uniqlo at ion orchard B3 to buy something, so dropped by food opera at B4 to check out the stalls.

ordered a S$5 mixed beef soup (牛杂汤) w/o noodles or rice at hwa heng beef noodles.

heng hwa beef noodles

mixed beef soup (牛杂汤)

mixed beef soup (牛杂汤) – S$5

there were just 2 or 3 slices of beef, 2 pieces of braised beef, 3 beef balls & quite several cut of stomach – decent enough portion for S$5 here i guess. the soup is the usual singapore hainanese beef noodle type soup (stall was supposed to be from 1948), which is slightly sweet & light closer to vietnamese “pho” than thai. pretty good. don’t have the robust beefy flavours & punch of HK beef noodle soup which was ok as i was not expecting it to.

my preference would still be beef noodle soup at thai noodle house, the beef brisket noodles 牛腩面 at noodles restaurant and at  Lao Jie Fang 老街坊 Mei Chin Food Court. but i am also quite happy with this for a change. 🙂

overall, pretty ok.

Good HK Standard Beef Brisket Noodles @ Lao Jie Fang 老街坊 Mei Chin FC on 8Aug2014

went to queensway shopping centre to replace a pair of plastic spectacles frame which i broke in amsterdam during my april2014 trip. it was done on the spot, just pay money of course!

decided to stop by mei chin market & food centre. the fishball noodles at xin lu (新路) teochew fish ball noodles & hup kee were both quite ok. 🙂

saw the lao jie fang 老街坊 cantonese beef brisket noodles at stall #02-15, and decided to try it instead. unfortunately did not bring phone so no photos. 😦

牛杂面 at HK street stalls

牛杂面 at HK street stalls

i love the beef brisket noodles 牛腩/杂面 at HK street stalls. regrettably cannot find any in singapore even remotely similar, the hainanese gluey beef noodles not really my cup of noodles, anyway have never taken them for years now.

beef brisket noodles 牛腩面 - S$8

beef brisket noodles 牛腩面 – S$8 @ noodles restaurant

the nearest i had which was pretty good really was the beef noodles at noodles restaurant, only thing missing was the mixed innards 牛杂. i just imagine that because of that somehow the taste of the soup was not as good.

at this lao jie fang stall, they have beef briskets at S$3.50 & briskets + tendons at S$5. the stall owner offered dry. in HK you usually take soup but anyway i gave it a try. the noodles was very nicely done, very QQ (al dente), not mushy, & the chilli & overall flavour was good. there was a good helping of briskets & tendons – 3 large pieces of tendons & 4 briskets.

i would rate this almost as good as the one at noodles restaurant, except this came with tendon so more satisfying. soup was good too but even further from the real thing in HK streets than the noodles restaurant.

this a stall i would definitely try again. when i happens to go there again, i will try the soup version. but somehow w/o the 牛杂, cannot revisit the same shiok factor as in HK streets, so maybe i should try cooking up my own beef brisket noodles 牛腩面. 🙂
