my OPS primary school friend bought 9pax dinner at fragrant garden this evening on 30.12.2016. ^^
this place is quite popular, filled up in the course of the evening.
the ter kar ton – trotter jelly was good!
the lor jelly is “pang” – fragrant. texture was great.
i prefer a bit more skin less lean meat or use the more fatty pig head meat instead of trotters which have quite chunky lean meat, but the taste was good!
hae chor was good too, crispy, and nice fillings.
pai guat wong 排骨王 not my favourite & not a dish i usually order.
this one looked impressive with the fire around the foil, and a friend took a video. they called it fragrant’s flaming pork.
it was quite inventive & good for zi char stalls to improvise.
don’t think it added anything to the taste though..but keeping it warm & moist, rather than cold & dry, i guess improves the taste.
a very competent dish, just not my dish.
the sour plum teochew steamed halibut my favourite. first time i taking this teochew style in a teochew restaurant.
i had a nice hk steamed whole turbot 港蒸多宝鱼 at富记大排档 in tai wai, hong kong 5.6.2015.
that was HK$98. this one S$70.
but i think worth every cent. this a much larger fish & very thick, tasty, tender fillet.
for me, a quite wonderful dish.
the oyster omelette was quite good. just nothing out of the ordinary.

but you know that was S$28 for medium, this probably S$18 for large, 1/2 the price. so i would have more of this, and sparingly of that.
the teochew fried kuay teow with chye poh was quite excellent, very flavourful.
one of the better ones i had.
though recently we had a better teochew fried kuay teow at crab at bay in macpherson.
& the dish there even better than this. the kuay teow was more burnt PLUS there were sliced fish like in sanlo horfun. 🙂
the kongbak pao was mediocre for me.
the belly pork was actually tender & great texture, the taste of the braise though not the best i had.
the orh nee was quite impressive.
the right side was the look when it as served. the server demo-ed the whisking & the left was the result.
it was good, the yam paste was very smooth, it was not too sweet & the taste was great!
the dinner for 9pax cost S$240, quite a good price & very enjoyable evening together, good food & fun.
