Good Pasta Lunch @ The Palate on 25Feb2016

bruschetta

bruschetta

bought a groupon in dec2015 expiring 1st week mar2016. arranged with friend to have lunch at the palate on 25.2.2016. ^^

this was the previous spizzico place. i din have post on spizzico so i guess have not been here for 3+years. spizzico was ok, not must have for me. 🙂

bruschetta

S$6 bruschetta

bruschetta was pretty ok. nice garlic bread with tomato salsa, overall quite nice taste.

bruschetta

S$18 beef carpaccio

carpaccio colour looked a bit anaemic, this preparation w/o the olive oil balsamic but pretty good with cheese & natural sweetness of beef. ok la..

squidink pasta

S$24 squidink pasta

squidink was very good!

especially good with more sauce at the bottom. friend said a bit salty but it was ok for me.

squidink pasta

S$24 squidink pasta

a very tasty pasta, with enuf seafood topping.

seafood pappardelle

S$25 seafood pappardelle

i asked server for recommendation between seafood pappardelle & the tagliata pasta since we already have a seafood squidink. he seemed more inclined on the seafood pappardelle.

seafood pappardelle

S$25 seafood pappardelle

& it was real good! better than the squidink even la…for those who like cheese.

seafood pappardelle

S$25 seafood pappardelle

a really, really nice pasta!

the lunch for 2 came to S$73+service no GST so S$80.30, just about good for my S$80 groupon which i made about S$40nett. so pretty good deal! & the groupon can be used for dinner monday to saturday.

1 for 1 mains weekday lunch

seafood bouillabaisse with toast – S$14

the italian version of seafood bouillabaisse was very good standard – flavourful soup, good ingredients for S$14.

beef carpaccio

beef carpaccio – S$16

beef carpaccio was ok. beef was sweet, good cheese & rockets. i guess a boring dish. 🙂

calamari

calamari – S$14

calamari

calamari – S$14

calamari (our “sotong”) was not so good, squid was a bit tough. nothing like the calamari fritto i had recently at la braceria, but that cost a ridiculous 2.5x price!

meat sauce cheese

rice suppli stuffed mozzarella cheese – S$9

rice suppli stuffed mozzarella cheese – S$9

the crispy rice stuffed with mozzarella was quite ok too…errr…like lots of carbs..

cheese ravioli

cheese ravioli

ravioli was good standard but expensive. i think it was like S$28.

porchetta

porchetta with fennel – S$9

porchetta with fennel was great dish for S$9.

lamb rack was to me below par, and expensive. not that it was expensive here, but these things are expensive in restaurants. 3 large pieces, but really i do a much better lamb!

youngest daughter wanted to have key lime pie, it was not too bad but not my kind of dessert.

i will certainly come back for the seafood bouillabaisse, bruschetta, porchetta, and don’t mind the crispy rice too.^^

Cheap & Authentic Italian @ la Botte Stresa on 29Aug2014

€9 funghi pasta

€9 funghi pasta

we went to villa taranto & mottarone cable car on the second day, and decided to go to la botte (which was like 50m from hotel elena) for dinner. we got our hotel to book 2pax table for us on 29.8.2014 7pm.

we were there at 6.55pm. there was a queue about 10pax including us. the others did not have reservations. the restaurant was filled up quickly.

€9 cold meat platter (goose, wild boar, deer, beef)

€9 beef carpaccio with truffle melted cheese

€9 beef carpaccio with truffle melted cheese

we ordered the €9 cold meat platter (goose, wild boar, deer, beef) & the €9 beef carpaccio with truffle melted cheese.

the cold meat platter was a monstrous serving. the meats were good but it’s something i would like just 2 or 3 slices so it was not a good idea for 2pax unless you did not want to try other starters. also it killed the tastebuds for other more subtle dishes like the fungi pasta. it was very generous for €9 & would be great for like 4pax.

the beef carpaccio did not look great but the taste was excellent with the truffle scented melted cheese. it was better than the usual more classy looking ones with rockets & extra virgin olive oil & balsamic. 🙂

€15 tagliata di manzo

€15 tagliata di manzo

€15 tagliata di manzo

€15 tagliata di manzo

the €9 creamy fungi pasta was good, but i felt the cold meat platter aftertaste killed off my appreciation of this more subtle dish.

the tagliata di manzi was kind of ordinary but good for €15, and so much arugula. we had to cancel 1 order of lamb ravioli as we had too much food already & would not really enjoyed it.

my son was also eyeing the guy next to us who was having nice grilled lamb chops. certainly there were several items on the menu we would be happy to come again to try. for me personally it was important to bypass the cold meat next time & enjoy some of the other great dishes here.

the service was indifferent to impatient, not outright rude but they didn’t really need us…it’s no different from any nazi chefs in Singapore where people go just to have the food, in fact probably slightly better. 🙂 the table wine was undrinkable, better to pay for better wine or just pay for bottled water.

the dinner cost about €50 including a 500ml carafe of table wine.

Forgettable Set Lunch @ La Villa on 16Jul2013

beef carpaccio with ricola salad & shaved parmesan

beef carpaccio with ricola salad & shaved parmesan

1 of the co-founders of Fundonate (a social networking charity efundraising site we started last year=see Fundonate- Share, Give & Receive) called for a lunch meeting on 16.7.2013. he decided on La Villa. La Villa is owned by Senso group (see Relaxed Dining @ Senso) and is located at the old River Valley Primary School at River Valley Road. 🙂

La Villa S$30pax set lunch menu

La Villa S$30pax set lunch menu

i had amex palate discounts but it was only 20% off ala carte orders for 5pax so we opted for the S$30pax set lunch instead.

DSCN5485 DSCN5484

the ambience was great, slightly rustic with the timber trussed ceiling, spacious & bright. 🙂 not so many diners though, like many decent average restaurants in Singapore!

DSCN5491 DSCN5490

for the choice of starters, the beef carpaccio with ricola salad, rockets & shaved parmesan was good. the preparation was similar to Senso, basically relying on the sweet original taste of beef (my preference would be a dash of balsamic cream, olive oil & sea salt). 🙂

the wild mushroom soup of the day & the mesclun salad with tuna flakes were quite ok too.

rigatoni with seafood

rigatoni with seafood

chicken wrapped with bacon

chicken wrapped with bacon

for choice of main course, none of us took the hawaiian pizza. the rigatoni seafood looked pathetic really, though the taste was ok (like not horrible), it was a just average, “nothing” dish & a pathetic serving in terms of quantity & ingredients. the chicken wrapped with ham looked better & tasted ok by my friends’ account. i would say confidently that i do a better pasta by miles, and a better chicken too!

DSCN5494 DSCN5496 DSCN5495

for desserts, i had a berry cheesecake.it was a good cheese cake..the tiramisu looked right & my friends said it was ok but not much liquer flavour..the mango mille feuille tower looked & tasted ok too it seemed.

overall while we had a good meeting & discussion, food-wise it was entirely a forgettable one. at S$30pax for 3-course+coffee, couldn’t really say it was expensive. but now that i am at an age where i need to be selective on the calories i consume, this would not fall within the worthwhile calories category..haha. 🙂 won’t be back, especially when there are so many good lunch deals in Singapore!
