S$3 fried kuay teow

6 of us including our helper went for a family out, a walk up bukit timah hill, on 2.1.2017. ^^

we parked at jalan bingka along rifle range road, and walked along the rail corridor, passed (under) the PIE then the anak bukit flyovers, about 10mins to hindhede road.

we were fast “walkers”. we started at 8.22am up the south view path to the summit, then down along the road at arrived back at the visitors’ centre at 9.16am, about 54mins all in.

we decided to walk over to the courts side.

it was early, so joo seng teochew muay & many stalls were not opened yet, so we decided to walk over to bukit timah food centre.

xin heng fried kuay teow

xin heng fried kuay teow

i wanted to try the char kuay teow. no queue, no so popular?

S$3 fried kuay teow

S$3 fried kuay teow

anyhow the S$3 fried kuay teow was pretty ok.

quite tasty, good wok hae, not many cockles, overall experience quite nice.

nothing special but quite competent. i am ok with it.

138 kueh chap

138 kueh chap

there was a long queue for the kueh chap.

kueh chap

kueh chap

the best thing here for me was the braised belly pork.

did not look that great, but it was tasty, and the texture was great, good bite, so dry.

kueh chap

kueh chap

the small intestines, pig skin, taupok were all ok.

i did not think it was quite average, nothing particularly good other than the belly pork.

very bad kueh

very bad kueh

the kueh was very poor. thick, not good texture, and the braise sauce also not great.

i would say 康乐stall at HL43 Food House was much better. the kueh there was very good.

hong wen mutton soup

hong wen mutton soup

the mutton soup opens at 10am.

i decided to try when it starts serving.

S$5 mutton innard soup

S$5 mutton innard soup

ordered a S$5 羊杂汤, mutton innards soup.

S$5 mutton innard soup

S$5 mutton innard soup

i didn’t like the soup. it was too herbal & unnaturally sweet for me.

i think very poor c/w chai chuan tou chinese mutton soup 柴船头羊肉汤 at bukit merah view food centre.

no comparison la…

he zhong fried carrot cake

he zhong fried carrot cake

there was this very long queue at he zhong fried carrot cake stall. you can see it from the road.

the children managed to order a plate, the wait was 1/2hr & they bring to the table, then pay.

he zhong fried carrot cake

he zhong fried carrot cake

it was good, great wok hae, tasty carrot cake.

i can see why people queue though i would not queue myself.

after makan, we walked back along the road back to jln bingka.

Very Good Dinner @ Portico Prime on 2Jan2017

freshly shucked oysters=6xS$5

freshly shucked oysters=6xS$5

wife wanted to relax & have a good dinner. it’s public holiday so some amex lovedining places like tunglok do not offer discounts.

i called up portico prime @ dempsey & they had the usual discount so we went on 2.1.2017.

portico prime

portico prime

portico prime is the previous prime society.

we liked the wagyu steaks & oysters here & came here when it was prime society, on 28.4.2015.

warm bread so so butter

warm bread so so butter

bread was warm & soft, not flavourful so very average & better was frozen hard like those at cafeteria.

freshly shucked oysters=6xS$5

freshly shucked oysters=6xS$5

oysters were ok, the “gee?” was creamier than the “ocean”.

oysters

oysters

i don’t know much about oysters, but looking back at the photos on 28.4.2015, the oysters then looked a lot creamier.

memory then was that oysters were good, while these were average.

caviar truffle capellini with sakura ebi

caviar truffle capellini with sakura ebi S$30

the caviar truffle capellini with sakura ebi dish was very flavourful.

with 50% discounts it was S$15.

at first it still looked expensive c/w say saveur or concetto.

portion was actually small for main but larger than the S$6, S$7 appetizer at saveur or concetto.

caviar truffle capellini with sakura ebi

caviar truffle capellini with sakura ebi

the taste though was awesome!

this a popular dish here, & i would order it again.

the truffle flavour was endearing with the al dente pasta, and the sakura ebi very tasty, crunchy and added some saltiness to the dish, combined perfectly. i think taste wise better than saveur & concetto which were also good.

200g usda choice grain-fed ribeye

200g usda choice grain-fed ribeye S$46

they did not have 2 dishes we wanted to order this evening – the kagoshima A5 wagyu, and mussels.

200g usda choice grain-fed ribeye

200g usda choice grain-fed ribeye S$46

we ordered the usda choice ribeye first.

it was really good, and the brown sauce was great too. done medium rare quite perfectly, very sweet, tender, flavourful steak. pencil asparagus was the cheaper variety, but it was good.

labrezza’s 300g angus ribeye with salsa & rockets was cheaper though & equally good.

200g australian grass-fed sirloin

200g australian grass-fed sirloin S$42

we were not particularly hungry but we decided to try another steak, though it was grass-fed & sirloin, altogether poorer cut & price not much different.

200g australian grass-fed sirloin

200g australian grass-fed sirloin S$42

steak was not as tender, still sweet but not as.

200g australian grass-fed sirloin

200g australian grass-fed sirloin

& medium rare doneness a bit over, not ideal overall. i won’t order this next time.

& i will call up first to ask if the jap A5 wagyu available.

portico prime inherited the largely same arresting ambience of prime society. the restaurant seems to be priced a bit lower end than prime society, and a bit more variety. portico group is helmed by nixon low who was with petite menu, and before that andre & saint pierre.
