繁華声嚷;

迈步红尘;

茶温轻酌;

A Return to Stillness

The clamor of splendor;
a season in full bloom,
vanishing in an instant,
fading without a trace.

A wind rises in the empty valley—
scattering promises,
disordering old memories,
carrying away the fragrant dust.

A perfumed path among blossoms,
lingering fragrance drifts—
stirring tides of thought,
surging straight to heart and brow.

I wander the ends of the earth,
treading the worldly dust;
a lifetime in search
of a bond where roots may finally take hold.

Green mountains hold no attachment,
a gentle sip of warm tea;
thawing the snow sealed in the heart for ten thousand years.

In the deep mountains, listening to rain,
the mind finds stillness, the Way unfolds—
all dharmas flow into emptiness,
a return to stillness.

Note:

1 treading the worldly dust——

  • worldly dust = “红尘”
  • micro, mundane, everyday affairs, karmic entanglements
  • symbolizes attachments, desires, and distractions that trap consciousness in samsara (the cycle of karma, birth, and death)
  • evokes both physical and mental weight — walking in the world, but weighed down by its concerns

2 in Buddhist and classical Chinese contexts, 法 (dharma) has a layered meaning:

  1. Cosmic / universal law — the underlying order of reality, what sustains phenomena.
  2. Teachings / doctrine — Buddha’s teachings and methods for liberation.
  3. Worldly systems or methods — the “rules” that govern existence, human life, and the universe.

  • means = “At this moment, all dharmas enter the gate of emptiness.”
  • ie all systems, teachings, and worldly processes are absorbed into/become part of emptiness / the ultimate truth / non-attachment.
